Have you ever noticed that several creatures can possibly and have been used to represent vampires?
I find it interesting that creatures such as wolves but also bats two emensly diffrent creatures have been used...
my question is simply this... do vampires have a real connection with animals such as these or is that just holywood?
I think they do,they would relate to the animal in a way that a normal huhman could not.
I connections I have are with my cats. They are my familiars. I'm not sure what connection they have with me as a vampire. I do think the bat and wolf motif are very hollywood.
i think vampires and animals can be very well connected, as vampires have a bloodlust that they have to maintain, and wild animals are predators and so are vampires
Historically, the only animal with which the "Vampire" has been connected is the wolf. In fact, as I have pointed out in another forum thread, the origin of the "werewolf" is, in fact, the vampire that predates the idea of the "werewolf."
To the Serbs and Croatians, the word for "vampire" was "vukodlak," which means "wolf's hair" given the legend that vampires can change into wolves.
The idea of vampires changing into bats is pure Stoker and Hollywood and finds no mythological or historical basis.
Surprisingly, the vampire is far more commonly represented in the original Slavic myths as changing into pumpkins and squash than into animal forms.
Ya might wanna remember this the next time you're served a slice of pumpkin pie. ;)
awesome excellent post:-) and ill watch out for fangs next time lol

My opinion is... if for no other reason instincts alone... yeh they would connect. :)
i realy dont think there is a special conectoin. not to say that there isnt. but ive never experenced it.
ive always herd it was wolves bats and rats...... but its really hard to say if they would for sure or not........saposedly in the fictional world vampires can manifest into bats...... so who knows i thinks its all what ya want to think and belive yourself to be true or not.......
according to some sorces of folk lore vampires were shapesshifters not limited to the common bat stereotype put out by cartoons and movies. but avalied themselves of a multitude of animals shapes such as wolves, rats, moths, spiders and many more
UpirLikhyj
there is a vast selection of folklore out there all over the world..... hungarian foklore for instance claims that vampires have the power to turn into bats wolves and mist when going in search of prey...... among many outher powers....
I've read a few books about this, so far I've heard of dogs, bats, wolves, and rats. So there might be some truth to it. Also in the book it talked about animals that have a heightened sense of vampires, and either tend to stay away from them or attack.
I have seen in a couple of books about the various beings and forms that vampires can change into. I believe that the vampire of today has a connections with most animals because of the predatory likeness of both as was stated before. I personally love wolves to death and am fascinated with various others. Not to mention the fact that I can befriend any animal that comes my way and that the run-aways seem to migrate to my house when they wander outside of the territory. It is kinda weird, but I like it because I love animals and they love me.
Speaking from personal experience. I have always noticed that animals tend to flock to me. It is as though they can sense something about me. I do believe that there is a connection between vampires and animals on a deeper level.
The similarities between vampires and animals are many. they have certains insticts, the need to be free and wild, to run. and to feed .
it hollywood they need a scary animal to put fear into people so that they can identify the posability of it to be true
Cyan, trissy, et al... again I ask, to which specific folkloric sources do you refer?
I possess a rather extensive library of all Slavic and Eastern European folklore on the subject, and nowhere have I found references to vampires changing into animals with the exception of wolves. While there are many references to vampires being capable of assuming the appearance of plants (particularly pumpkins and squash) or inanimate objects such as household furniture, and even bright points of wandering light, yet I have never found any folkloric reference to vampires being capable of shapeshifting into rats, dogs, bats, etc.
i dont think there is any evidence of an animal connection
We have a Siberian Husky who can talk but he don't bite.
He has one blue and one brown eye.
People are scared of him but hes very gentle.
He can howl like a wolf and acts different when there is a full moon. He gets more active.
I don't know about the connection between animals and vampires though.
I believe that the wolf does but the bat I don't think so... I believe hollywood came up with the bat.... because of the vampire bat... which is in no relations to us
Our Husky can read our mind and feelings
He knows when we are leaving or when one of us is coming home.
We noticed he goes to door a few minutes before one of us comes home.
So I know animals have psychic capabilities of some kind.
I think that if vampires and animals were to have any sort of connection, I think that cats would be included. I know during my awakening my cats would want to be near me more....especially at night
I think some beings just are more connected to the animal world rather they are vampire or human.
In my last post, I meant whether they are vampire or human. I got to typing too fast. I think my fingers were moving faster than my brain. LOL!
not all animals my ancients some are looked after by those who know. there is a window in the stream you look in it you see your self all of your self. the pain is beyond for it is the pain of an ancient loosing his memory fear not the light. fear the red of the light. there is not the right red in the moon now is there my poor things.
I truly feel for you because there is another way to memory and it can be shared rather than absorbed. my heart is for you more than your prey for I know now. best of luck and know I love you all. Crowley also knew who you were hehe and many others.
I am not here to hurt you just to talk to you.
I have a strong connection with my cat.. But I also have just got a puppy and am starting to form a bond with her.
So beyond extremely predatory animals, I've always heard the opposite...horses frighting, cats hissing, birds scattering not a connection at all but a recognition that a predator is near.
There is alot of posts here that discuss the relationships of animals with people but that isnt exactly what im looking for... i know of the bonds we have with our animals and pets.
i like the sources of folk lore where these ideas came from and how accurate they are in the modern age...
I think they would relate to animals more so then nonvampires would.
Hmm interesting topic. I never gave this a thought but I always felt all species have an connection to each other. Their are many similarities that can be found in many animals that can be related to humans. Now as far as the vampiric side I don't know.
well, could be. I love wolves and animals, mostly wild ones. back in sept i think, i had this little bat ( not sure what kind) take a liking to me and would fly down and sit on my shoulder whenever i would come outside after the sun set. he did that for awhile, although i have no idea what happened to him, havent seen him since it turned cold. but i suppose it could also be hollywoods imagination running wilkd as well. I would like to think that vampires are able to communicate with animals myself
To me it is more of a comfort level and kinship you feel. I dont go into histories, I go by feel of what is right. because we all know how someone can write something in a "book" and have it pure hogwash and translated into more hogwash. I have always been close with bats (as per my Tatt) and to wolves.
Well from what i have read and researched most vampires do not have a connection with vampires. Most animals are afraid of them or weary.
some vampires thou do have a animal that they can call on for protection and most i hear it is wolves or dogs.

You know... even though it is a newer term... wouldnt the Otherkin theory be a connection?
on the protection angle, if you have the connection to the animal they will protect you, whether you call them or not
well yes but just because they have similarities doesnt make them connected...
my view is there is absolutely no real connection other than what the church has invented and reinvented for example if something around you frightens you you have only a few options "move away" witch they arent going to do "kill it"they tried that it was call the crusades "or demoralize it " witch is actually what they chose to do making things from real life to hollywood movie...
well.. i speak on a deeper connection such as genetic or if they came from the same thing or somthing benieth the fact they were grouped in movies
I my self have a hawk. Ive found that animals connect with us very well. the wolf, Im not sure. When i come in contact with them they dont seem to like me. I tried to raise one and it turned out badly .He would obey me but he showed sighns of strong hate .
I heard it said once that, the link between Vampire and animal comes from reincarnation, that the Vampire was an animal in their past life. and when the animal was reborn into the vampire,, the soul and/or spirit of the animal remained.
Both have hightened senses & a hunger so yeah I guess there could be a strong connection.
I believe that, as vampires, we are more in tune with the natural world that 'normal' people and therefore we find it easier to connect and form bonds with animals. It probably depends more upon the individual vampire as to what animal they are most stongly connected.
I believe that vampires and animals are connected if through nothing else but sheer instinct.
I am only speaking of my personal opinion, but I think that there is a connection. In my life time I have been privileged to meet a varitety of people.
Shift changers or people that take on another form; I have only met one and he did not profess to be a vampire, and he did not take on a tangable form... more like a shape with loose molicules. The formation was canine.
Anyway I believe that humans have a connection with the animal world. I know I have a connection with my guardian "Dog" and my horse, so why not choose to believe that a vampire would as well.
I thought FelixFelix brought up an interesting counterpoint. animals can certainly have a sensitivity.
That you're asking about, and a quote, a "genetic" connection, I have to assure you...absolutely not.
to be honest, i believe that to be well....hollywood. vampires have connections with vampires, and wolves are connected with wolves.
there isn't much more to say.
OUt side of bats and wolves I do not belive that there are any other animals. bats and wolves have a darkened black depth of a soul just like the vamps.
I believe that their connection is with several nocturnal animals. I can see where they would have a connection with owls and cats along with the already noted bats and wolves.
well there is the connection between vampire bats and vampires only in the nature of sucking the blood off beings or animals... but wolves are seen as mysterious and all.. i don't have any idea on the relationship between a wolf and a vampire.. i love them though
Im gonna go with a yes that they have a connection with at least wolves..all the books I have read have pointed to this but then again Im no expert.
there is a bond between creature of the night and vampires. it is a link with there minds. they sence that we are like them and fear us not
i think vampires do have a strong bond with animals....expecially creatures of the night....
Hollywood in the sense of morphing.
But animals can tell when there is a difference in a person. We are already Mammals and have a particular scent that animals can smell and sense when it comes to what's within.
A person who steps out of the so called norm that animals are familiar with carries a different scent. The aura around that person changes according to their spiritual energy and enlightenments. Animals sense the change and it is different than what they are used to. They can see human auras and the color changes to those auras. This is why animals react differently towards certain people, not just out of being a stranger to them but being strange as well.
I agree with several of the posts that refer to the connection between vampires and animals as being purely an instictual nature. Vampires are a predator, and so tend to share the company of other predators. While the cultural myths connecting them to particular animals seems to be veired.
As for vampires morphing into animals that is a magical action and is only limited by the practioners desires.
most predators do not tolerate another predator in their territory.
I can see where a vampire would be connected with a bat. That connectionn is simple. However, if one is to connet a vampire with a wolf then why not other hunters...such as a bear or a mountain lion? What makes a connection with a wolf more likely?
i think that some people in general have a connection with animals just some stronger than others
for the most part I think it is just Hollywood but all forms of life have a connection of some sort to another. Old people tend to live longer and be healthier if they have a pet with them. Some like one of my daughters just have a natural bond with all forms of animals for some reason they are drawn to her and are always calm around her. It is an individual thing not vampiric
I belive there may be a connection. If you look at the the vampire is an animal in its own right. It is your animal side comming out, a more carnal side, and all animals connect in that sense.
why exactly is their a connection between bats and vampires? or werewolves?
the only connection i see is folklore and mythology and that the modern day vampires really don't have any real connection with any of those creatures other than they've seen the movies and feel that they should have special kinships with them.
I would have to say base on what I have seen and read that there isnt a connection between the vampire and wolf. The bat would be more connected to a wolf. Animals don't bestow the ablity asside from verbal response, wolf howling, cat meowing, dog barking. Each one is there way of connection other then using senses to determine purpose and intent.
I really dont see how the two can be connected... I have connections with my pets but nothing to do with vampires... I think that more something that based movie wise!
I think there are connections between animals and vampires but Hollywood overplays them
They may just for the fact that the traditional vampire goes off of instinct and primal urges, like many animals; two examples are wolves and bats. Though I believe that Hollywood has also capitalized this making it seem less important.
I am not sure why it is.. but i seem to have an unusal connection to cats of all kinds. They tend to follow me around like dogs will. I am not sure if its my being a vampire or as others have tried to convience me that i am otherkin.. shrugs I just know I never feel safe without a cat in my home.
There seems to be a theme repeated over and over here that thier connection is solely based on that of both being creatures of the night or that they both hunt or that they drink blood......if this be the case that would say that maggots, mosquitoes, moths, worms, raccoons, possums, armadillos ect would also be connected... this would not seem true to me.. i was really looking for deeper then the basic logic of when they are active or feeding habits... there are many knowledgeable post here and i am grateful for all responces.
you can have an affinity with animals.your pets.or you can connect with animals if thet sense that you have no fear of them or you dont pose a threat to them.but as for vampires turning into bats, rats and wolves.is hollywood.
Add on.i can tell you a story.i went to london zoo with my grandfather and brother when i was about 11 years old.we were wlking through the tiger pen.there was a gorgeous female white tiger in one of them.it was walking around constantly growling, where they had it in was no bigger than the average living room of a house.people were staring at it.i crouched down as it walked past me then it crouched down in front of me.i looked into her eyes, she put her paw up to the glass.the look in her eyes said it all.get me the fuck out of here.i hate zoos.Nature reserves for protection and breeding of the species and safari parks where the animals have the room to roam live pretty freely maybe.but in cages for entertainment, that sucks big time.
yea i think they certainly have something to do with animals. they have those animal instinct in them.
In response to suavevamp:
Although this is straying from the topic drastically. i see how you may think zoos are so prison like however with out zoos many creatures would have gone extinct. In fact if zoos never came to be... you would NEVER see a white tiger. Only one in the entire earth was EVER found in the wild.... that one is the ancestor to all white tigers you will see today in captivity.
I think that the connection could also be seen as Vampires have that predatory spark within them that animals can easily sense in others, so it might lend a little bit of kinship or at least respect.
I think the connection would be something like most animals hunt for their prey and it is not like they cook it or anything they just eat it.The blood and all. Most animals like the taste of blood i mean look at dogs if you have a cut and your dog smells it even your cat their first instinct is to lick it .
I think the olny reason bats are connected with vampires is because of the vampire bats found mostly in Central and South America. They feed off of blood of livestock while it sleeps.
i think that we are capable of connecting with animals on a level becasue wecan understand them. Especially wolfs, I used to own a 3/4 wolf 1/4 dog she would look at me and i would look back her and she would know that I understood her we had a psycic link you could say
I think that there are definetly connections between vampires and animals, but I think that it's more like a spiritual connection, and that it's different for everyone. For example, I have deep connections with bears, panthers, and crows...but they are my spiritual guides and totem animals. Then there is the obvious connection with my pets. :)
Yes I believe that vampires and animals have a connection to one another for the same reason as a few other people that have posted here, that both are predators and have a connection through this if not many other connections as well. Animal instinct and primal desire are two more things that animals share with the vampire race, or at least in my own opinion.
Hollywood sucks when it comes to the our real world. I agree with you all. Animals are born preditures. They are our individual familiar. Yet again Hollywood sucks as most of the stars do.
I think they have some sort of connection due to both natures being wild and nocturnal.
I think that they are connected. Animals are primal. They feed to live. In a sense- vampires are like that as well. It's their way of survival. So in essence- they relate to one another.
I believe that there is a connection for sure. But what exactly the connection is, I'm not sure if we could truly ever know. The wolf and bat thing is overly-magnified by 'hollywood' but is still very true.
I don't really think there is a connection other then most people see them as myths or folk lores...since wolves are more commonly used when in terms of lycans...but bats I can see the connection to the vampire source.
Well I see the connection. The words stalk and prey come to mind. The word feed and hunt are others. So these words are associated with animals as well as the vampire world. If I look at my Native roots for a second we are all animals and we all posses animal characteristics.
It's always been portrayed in Hollywood that Bats and wolves and even rats where somehow connected, either by telepathy or by shape shifting. In reality I think it could be more like a familiar. In the old way the Natives have always been somehow connected when it came to the animals. In this belief they can shape shift as well as communicating though telepathy while on vision quest and in ceremony.
Very true my dear sister I love when the native card gets thrown in there.
Well take the vampire bat in the old movies it was used as figure that the Vampire would transform into. As well as the wolf and Rats .. The all have a liking for blood. There night creatures as well so they make the perfect form of vamp..
I wanna a puppy...they tell fuuny jokes, and cats know alot of secrets...
animals and vampires im not sure about I think 50 percent of it is hollywood trying to spice things up a bit in moves and the other half is what people beleive when they see those movies and tries to conncect them with certain animals that are seen in their lives
According to hollywood vampire lore & Bram Stoker, vampires have rule over the darker things of the night.... so my answer is NO.
