The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory

While sitting in the Doctor's office with my children today, my daughter about fell out of her seat when she was reading her book. The book she is currently reading is called "The new Encyclopedia of the Cat" by Dr. Bruce Fogle DVM.

Why would she get so excited you might ask.. and I did.. was because she found the following passage in her book.. and it sparked off a two hour conversation amongst her and others in the office.

Metamorphic Cats, pg. 33 second paragraph.

"In Japanese folklore, the shapeshiting cat is of a more sinister nature. In a tale similar to the Western Vampire myths, a demon cat attacks a fair maiden and sucks out her lifeglood. It then assumes her identity. In its new female form, the cat turns its attentions to the maiden's lover, Prince Nabeshima. By gradualy extracting his life force, during nightly visits, the vampire cat weakens the prince to the point of death. He is saved just in time through the vigilance of his faithful servany, and the impostor is eventualy destroyed.
A similar fable comes from Spanish-Jewish folklore.
Lilith, Adam's first wife, leaves him to become a vampire in form of a black cat, who then descends upon the helpless, sleeping babies and sucks out their blood. This story may have contributed to the widespread belief that a cat may lie on a sleeping baby, causing suffocation."

Told her I would post it for all to read and she has said " I hope that everyone at Vampire Rave enjoys this little bit of information."

So in essence I am posting for her as she is not old enough to be on this site yet.

was reading this and was going to bring up the lilith myth. Thank you for adding that part of it.. It is anient japanese folklore.. I love reading ab out diffrent cultural myths..but the lilith myth is referenced by all cultures to different degrees

it reminds me of this movie that had a series of small movies within in..and all 3 had to do with the travel of a cat who was looking for what had killed her previous owner...
a lil monster that came out of the wall and sucked the breath out of sleeping children

In my household we value many things, and one of those things is the Japanese culture. So it was very cool for this passage to be found and brought to my attention.
I try to encourage my children to learn new things and to look at them through a differnet light.. To do the research and understand.
So far it is working out well.

The strange thing is this.... since the myth appears in all those different cultures waaaaay back before travel was good and telephone lines existed, couldn't it be true to some extent?? Like dragons for example... Every culture thousands of years ago spoke of them almost identically.... Surely there must've been something similar to whatthey desribed out there.

Thank you very much for that .. ALthough ther is an actual movie that is very similar to what you were describing .. l forget the name of the movie but what l can remember of it was that it had demon cats who could transform from human to a human cat like creature .

many years ago visiting my sister i stayed over her place for the night and being summer i left the back door open,while i was sleeping i found i was finding it hard to breathe,i opened my eyes and there was a siamese cat that had walked into the house and sat on my chest and was staring directly at me i freaked and yelled out the f word,then it jumped off an ran out of the house.

OOOooooOoOo!!! loved reading this!!! recently i discovered something unusual about my black cat, while giving him a routine checkup and seeing if his gums were ok, i noticed that instead of two upper canines (one on each side) , he has a total of four. and at times i will wake up at night to find him curled around my neck actually licking it and nipping my skin. just thought i would share this with ya'll. oh and his pictures are in my portfolio if interested.

it kind of reminds me a little bit of steven kings sleepwalkers. but hey it was still a good read

Thankyou for posting that, I loved the entry. I agree with you on the idea of the cat superstition with babies, though I think our cat just enjoys sleeping on our pillows and putting her tail on my nose because she knows I will wake up all stuffed and sneezing

when a cat rubs its tail on your face its to claim you. youve been pwnd.

also when they do a happy kitty dance on you theyre marking their territory. same with when they run their face on you. you see cats have scent glands in their paws and cheeks. male cats have extra glands in their urine tract that they catch on their tail when they spray and they know it so they rub their tail on you to claim you as their own.

I am very much into the Japanses culture and had heard of the Vampire cat. My own experience has been the opposit though. I had a sisamise cat for many years growing up and she was more my protector than plotting against me:) The house I grew up in seemed to have an uneasy spirit in the downstairs part of the house, of course, where my room was. She was right by my side everynight as if watch or waiting for something.

I have to agree I have been around them for many years since childhood and they loved me... I have never even been scratched.

rumor has it that they also have more then one tail and can animate the dead..

Thanks to you Silverbow and to your daughter for sharing the japenese and Lilith mythologies, I've heard similar before. My cat is 21+yrs old and she's always been a guardian to my kids. I f i was downstairs doing laundry and the baby would wake in the crib, she'd come down and yowl at me to go "fix it" until I went upstairs and took care of the baby. She also now babysits my Mom and will come get me if somethings not right with Moms oxygen. So demons or angels or a lil bit of both wonder now as your cat "meows".
