First of all- I would like to thank 'FromNothingICome' for pulling this one out of me...
That 'Sire' thing. I was just thinking about what a joke it is. Some people really find it some kind of life achievement. Is it? Are you a winner in the game of Life? Being a Sire only means you have been online more than someone else wasting (my present verb which may change later- don't misread me, I am a human that feels different things at different times) your personal time rating pages and hating it. I mean, who's getting the most out of their Vampire Rave experience- the person who rushes to pick up Sire by spending hours upon hours rating in a short amount of time- or the people that take their time and take more advantage of getting to know people, utilizing the forum and having fun in their Houses/Covens?
I joined and made Sire in 4 1/2 months. I am not even proud of that. But I did it- I was sucked into the goal of completion. And yes, I hoped that my dedication would help me along the way (Getting the Procurator and Dominar capabilities that enable me to positively influence VR). But, there is some kind of warped respect you get for completing the levels alone that keep us going. Maybe you'll get a little more respect with 'tenure'. Like in the Military- there is 'Time In Grade' (rank) and 'Time In Service' (how long you've been in). Really, it doesn't mean you are any less of an idiot than other people might be.
Sire does not mean you are smart. It doesn't mean you deserve respect that others shouldn't.
Take the 17 year old Sire- are they worthy of more respect than the 37 year old parent of 3 with an amazing educational background who happens to be a Caitiff? Not to me.
Vampire Rave is more than 'The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory'- it is a test in many aspects. How would you react in this situation? Will you change if given this title? Will you still be who you TRULY are? What is your 'truth' anyway?
It is in fact just a website =) But the intricacies of it, rather intentional or not... make it something far more than that.
I think the Administrative roles deserve respect even though some people beg to differ. But the status levels? To me, that merely relfects your time online. Some people use it for the simple fact of having a rating that counts 28 times more than a Whelp. It is a power thing- but that's as far as a Sire's power goes.
Ah yes--- true, creating your own Coven. If your goal really is to create the utlimate Coven that will be beneficial the other members- that is great. But if it is to gather your minions to reign in your little 'I Love Me' world- I think your motivations need to be re-examined.
Is leveling up about power and control for you? Is it about a personal goal (you just hate leaving things unfinished, you are hoping to be considered for a greater VR role and want to display dedication)? Or something else?
I know in my heart of hearts- I am the same person and I react the same way I always have since the first moment I joined. Being in my 30s- my clay is not so easily molded or reformed. I repsect people who I believe deserve it. MY heart is the only one I can and will follow. If you are a lower ranking Vampire Rave member with wit and that certain 'je ne sais quoi', you'll perk my attention just as quickly as anyone else.
Give us your opinions- realizing I very well may change my mind or stick to my guns as the thread carries on ;)
By the way, all this I have just typed- and I admit I am one of those who congratulates people on picking up Sire.
I have a very competitive and addictive personality. I was finally able to quit completely MMORPGs after years of trying to "retire" this past year. I would play them and strive to excel until I was the number 1 player and raid leader on a server. It consumed me at times until I"d burnout and come back to start all over. I was finally able to quit because I'm going back to school, and taking no chances of screwing that.
Now I only really browse the internet in the evenings after work - as I'm usually out having fun on weekends. So 4 days a week. When I first started coming here I felt that old drive kick in and rushed my way to level 5 to get in a house or coven. I thought about whether or not I wanted to build a coven as a sire when I hit sire because competitive leading is what I do well. Then I realized I was just enjoying relaxing and enjoying the content, and that power playing a message board wasn't fun - not to mention after doing high end raids it wasn't quite the same.
So for me - I'm just cruising along at my own pace. I typically just rate profiles from people in the box, people that rate me, or I go look at people that update and ask for it. I don't go through tons of profiles sorting by newest or anything like that. I don't post in posts anymore just to get my post count up - now i just post if I have something I want to say - at first I played the games and stuff (forum games are faster 10%s then rating :D).
To be honest - I rarely look at someone's level when determining if their post/chat is worth taking seriously. I'm often suprised to find later that someone who's posts I've enjoyed for awhile is only low level, and new, once I actually glance over. I will say that more often though the higher levels have great posts - I think it's part of the weeding process so it does give some weight.
Oh yea forgot a thought up in one of those paragraphs. Once I actually got in a house - no way I'm leaving by choice ;) I love those guys :D
I wholeheartedly agree with images on this one.
I think the entire setup of VR is one of the things that makes it unique. The level system, the way the ties in with rating profiles, etc. The system encourages people to socialize, which is brilliant. But I think that’s how we should look at it--as a means to an end, not the all and the only. Posting a million comments in the forum along the lines of “I don’t know much about the subject.” Or “cool,” is not socializing. Neither is stamping a profile you haven’t read with a picture or “You have been rated.” If you do this, you may get Sire status in record time. But how many friends will you have at the end of it? Will you have that feeling that you’re a part of a community? That people know and like you? That you’ve had a positive influence on the site, and in effect, on others? Probably not. You probably won’t even feel like you’ve “won” the “game.” One day I’ll be a sire as well. But along the way I plan on taking the time to meet some great people, share ideas, and make a home for myself here. You should do the same.
its seems alot of vr members take this site as a game with really no prize for winninng and not a place for knowledge and to meet people of the same interests, and even the ratings are blown out and seem to make it somekind of contest, but i think it has its advantages and keeps people interested including myself
Imagesinwords, I always respected u, u are a very beautiful woman and you have a heart of gold. I admire u not for just ur achievements here but for ur achievements in life. I admit i spend alot of my time trying to raise my status or work hard on favor, however i believe it is to help not only myself but my fellow house members. My life has been about helping others since i was very young and i will continue to do that. Thx for this post and i know if u begin a coven or house, u will be be a great master/mistress. :)

I guess it all boils down to your motivations. If you work hard at your status so you can raise the average for your House and help them in the standings- that's good teamwork.
I was just wondering- what were the reasons many people strive for Sire.
This system is set up for success, or the opportunity to 'get back' at the system in a way.
We need balance. We can't all be morally inclined :) We need a little bit of storm to keep up grounded and liven things up- I guess?
The stormers are to busy rating to respond to this ;) (joking only!!)
I leveled up quite quickly, because I became very addicted to this site. It took my maybe what 8 months to make Sire. It's not a big deal my status level never meant anything to me really. I just enjoyed spending time here going about rating people, speaking my mind in the forums. The person who rushes to become a Sire definetly does not know what VR is about, and certainly cannot enjoy this place the way it should be.
Just because someone is a Sire doesn't mean they deserve more respect. Becoming a Sire is no big deal, nothing special. I don't understand why people want to phsycotically level up really fast. Vampire Rave is best enjoyed when you're not worrying about your level.
Another thing! Why are people afraid of Sire's? Anyone want to explain this one to me?
I think I can answer, though I'm mainly hypothesizing and going on my own personal feelings.
I know for me, I just assume that sires/dominars/admins are extremely busy with tons of friends as it is. I also just assume that most new poeple that come here immediately "suck up" to them and spam them for help, or just to suck up to people in perceived "power" which is what normally happens in internet communities.
Because of this I don't want to be perceived as another of that type - so typically I don't seek out people way up in whatever "status" and instead just socialize normally otherwise until people get to know me and assume eventually we'll talk, or not I guess. I've talked to one or two casually that seemed really open, but that is about it.
actually i do feel a bit intimidated to message not the sire's but the sires that carry other titles cause there is a great big warning sign there, so i just dont get involved and not message them at all, i dont think i would wanna be in that position cause i like to make friends and honestly thoses titles are a very true deterant

Just so you all know- I am open =) I get busy, but I will get back with everyone!
I personally find it boring to strive to reach for the next level anymore. When I first joined VR the idea was cool but it drained me day by day, sitting in front of this screen and not really enjoying the experience. I'm level 16 and have been for quite some time now.. I found my % dropping down the other day instead of rising lol I had to chuckle a bit. It reminded me how much I really don't care about it anymore. My main interests are within my coven and helping it suceed and be as great as what I think it is. That dosen't necessarily mean gaining favour for it to be #1 in the stats..It means interacting within the coven walls and getting ppl to know me and vice versa. I'm grateful that my status in my coven means nothing when it comes to being put in charge of something. It's an awesome feeling to be trusted like that.
But anyway, making sire I think could be a hindrence in some ways. The idea is great and we'll all acheive it oneday but i can see the possibilities of ppl not wanting to approach you because it's intimidating. Or, you get the suck ups that msg you but they're only fake just because they think it's cool. I think you find your true friends along the way to siredom and a few ppl stand out now and then that are genuinely there for you at the end. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've seen this happen in even real life. To those that find Sires intimidating I hope you all change your mind..most (not all) are very approachable and enjoy meeting new friends that are genuine. The ones I've met or have breifly spoken to have alot of spunk and compassion. The fakes, should think twice before they think it's going to make them popular chances are, it won't.
Siredom is a great acheivement but you moswell enjoy it along the way. Your point of view means just as much to us as Ghoul, Fiend, Whelp as it does a Sire.
Well that's my two cents. Imagines you've brought up an ineresting topic to say the least. I hope you all take the time to read her words thouroughly. Racing through the levels dosen't make you anymore powerful then the next at the end.
When I joined on Feb 6 of this year i knew no 1 thing about the site. I read the VR Manual and then started to rate people that rated me and then built my so called Realm of a Profile. I met alot time flew buy and I went thru 2 Houses and playing hangman everyday 24/7 gained more status. My daily is rate pros, ports, database, forums, and do hangman and 5's in between and now im a (21).
I have alot of friends true friends and if i become a Sire, that will be the honour that i gained upon myself. And to answer questions yes i still will have all my friends and even family here. Will i be respected by people? I sure hope so I help out anyone that asks. The system here is a grand one. Forth the Prince is what he is a Prince.. He had the knowledge to make the site and do everything to build thie Vamp Community for that we should give thanks for.
That is only my opinion and mine alone..
as to becoming a sire....as one of the first 100 ppl on the site...I still have not attained it even though I am on here most of the time....(usually jurking)
but really..I could care less about making sire...all it would mean is a way to leave a house I have no intention of leaving.....
I have always felt the level and ratings system caused more strife and bickering than it ever had any value....
I agree 100% that becoming a sire doesn't make you a better person...only you yourself can do that
and it's not only sire who get told they are feared..I have been getting that since about the 6th month of the site
new ppl saying they weren't sure about talking to me because I was a longstanding member....don't see why...I have no authority at all....not sure I would want it if it were offered to me even.
but ya..thats my .02$

usually jurking, Daermon? Hey- rock on... we all have our reasons for being here, lol... I am sure you meant 'lurking' =)
I agree with you 150% imagesinwords, thats pretty much all i have to say on this...
you give respect to get respect, thats what i was taught...
hehe yes that was supposed to be lurking......i'm wearing my freudian slip today..hehehe or was it your pics images?
hehe
Hello for me i`m just trying to enjoy the experience I rate the profiles i see i`m just ,and trying to have fun . What the big deal being a sire anyways? You have more responsibilities in which with any job it`s not always fun i bet .. The people you meet on here are fun ,as well just to talk with .. So kudos to all the elders . Give them respect they deserve ,and if you feel the need to be competitive fine but don`t let it go to your head .... ~smiles~

Nope- no other responsibilites come with being a Sire. If you are simply a Sire- you get nothing extra except the rating counting more when you rate. A Sire's rate counts 28 times more than a Whelp's.
My only 'status goal' was to make Caitiff. The reasoning was simple. Make sure the account stayed active so I could enjoy without concern of 'expiration'. I didn't feel that goal was really worth going on a rating spree...But the levels to Caitiff advanced fast enough on their own. I'm simply here to interact with others as much as possible...maybe gain some knowledge I wasn't privy to or a new perspective. Ratings are pretty minimal in those respects.
I respect the ones who have acheive the sir, and I do wish to acheive it, still it is only for my personal goal, as if do or not will not affect this, I am always willing to listen to others and I am happy when I can help, I give my cell phone to the ones who need to talk and I can even call sometimes, I never push them to speak but I do ask if they feel better everyday when they had a bad one,I can keep a secret on someone's problems, I know I have poeple helping me, and I don't tell them about the others but about me, the ones that I help I listen to them and only them.
I thinkBein a sir is part of that too a little.
being sire is at times a power thing for some of course. It took me almost a year to get that level thou. I took my time, learned, made friends. And i am still learning. I am the head of a coven as most know, but, i am never too busy for anyone who needs help. I am always open for anyone, and every one who needs a hand. And if i can't help, i know some one who can.
My coven, is the lowest one simply because i am not into the power/get the highest score/and or first in the list thing. of covens. I am here to help, and share what i know, and learn what is needed.
I don't see myself no better or lower then anyone else. I think of the members of my coven as sisters and brothers, and bows to them, for it wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for them.
I hope if any one needs anything, i am always open to you.
~PEACE~
This is a good topic thanks imagine for making the thread. I myself have been on the site for more than a year well granted with a old acount that wen't bye bye last month. But anyways I got in the higher levels. To be honest though I didn not care what level I was. For me my fun from the site came from looking other profiles and getting to know them. Aswell making friends with people that in every day life I wouldn't get a chance to know. I would spend twelve hours at a time on the site whole time being spent talking and just hanging out with others. I agree with you gaining sire really fast doesn't have its adavantages. Sure you might have a big judgement in like ratings on the site and able to make a coven. Really though whats the good if know one even acknowledges you.. One piece of advice I give to everyone that is new and joins is take your time and try and get to know everyone.
Damnit, now I need to go edit my resume again..
No, seriously, when I made Sire I was amazed at the attention I got. I didn't think it was that big of a deal and I had never looked at the Sire page to see who was on it.
As for respect, well everyone has to earn that, Admin as well. I may be a little more diplomatic with the Admin due to a clear disinterest in losing my work, but they have to earn my respect as well. I'm sure some people will disagree with me, but thats ok, I don't actually care.
To be honest, I had very specific goals when I arrived in VR, and they have been accomplished.. rather well I might say. In addition, I made Sire in just over 3 months, thanks to all my referral points and a mark.
Originally Evangius and I were going to start a coven, but that's been put on hold indefinately because we like Madadh. So now that the goals have been accomplished and I've maxed out on levels I'm just hanging around and enjoying the site..

We are humans- and yes... there are times when we do want power over others because of circumstances. I am glad you've achieved your goals Nyx. I understand where you are personally coming from.
Im probably gonna get hated for even speaking of this..but...Im sure Pinklust and some of the older VR members remember Empress. She used her rank to make everyone feel inferior...thus she got suspended. she just paraded around telling everyone that she was higher on the food chain than them. not cool.
Oh I'm not looking for power over others.. I'm happy having power over myself. Try to take that away tho and we'll box.. but I have no interest in having power over others. And if I did, I doubt I'd do it online anyway.
I really like ur point imagesinwords. VR is fun buts its who u are when u step away from the screen that REALLy matters!

Cartomancer Arch Sire (194) Posts: 1,252 Honor: 31,050 [ Give / Take ] |
a power in that case as in the power of epiphany, Nyx.
Very nicely put.
Level did seem like a big deal at first. You really want to get higher starting out so you can send more messages and post in the forums and such and then you develop a habit of wanting to get higher as fast as possible.
Now I really don't care about it too much. I do not post unless I have something to say. I spend most of my time chatting with people on my friends list which I only keep people on that I actually chat with.
yes, i'd say most of my time is spent chatting as well.
I try to balance my time here at VR.
I would like to be a Sire before I am in grad school for the simple fact that at that time I will not - literally - have the time to do this. It would be nice to be at that level when I sort of "disappear" for days at a time.
But it isn't necessary. I think rating is my lowest score because I spend a lot more time communicating with my many friends here. That is what I like about VR - the people are awesome!
WE ALL ROCK!
PinkLust: The idea of being intimidated by a Sire is interesting. Have people actually said that they’re intimidated by you for this reason? I could put a different spin on that. Some of the Sires have been here for a while and are well known, yes? There are certain members who are known to a majority of the users here. If I said “Daire” or “Batchyld” or (yes…) Pink Lust (just a few examples), a lot of the people here would know who I’m talking about. Don’t crucify me for this, but I’m about to use an analogy. Think of it like the caste-system in a high school. There are lots of social groups, but the biggest divide would be between the popular kids, and the less popular kids. If you were to think of yourself in the context of being one of the popular kids, the intimidation (particularly of newer members) seems to make more sense.
Daermon: You say that you don’t care about your level and you’re not in a rush to get higher. At the same time, I should note that whenever I see you in the forum, you usually actually have something to say. Could there possibly be some strange and mysterious connection between taking the time to think, and having something interesting to say? I wonder….
And I agree with Felix. That’s pretty much how I did it. But to get to Caitiff isn’t terribly difficult, and you could just spend time responding to some game-threads in the sandbox, rating stuff in the database, and checking out the profiles of the people who view your. It is entirely possible to secure one’s account without flooding informative posts with garbage, or stamping every profile on here. Just an opinion.
Eloquently put posts here.... now I'm all 'tongue tied" to put my thoughts in here!
I started off as a PM and really wanted to move up levels, but now, I'm taking my time and enjoying myself. I've made many new friends, learned so much, and have had the opportunity to share knowledge and even give some advice here and there.
This site is like a home away from home for me and never a day goes by without coming away from here with something gained and in a very good way. Making sire would be a personal goal and when it happens, wonderful! I love my house and the people in it and would love to stay right there, if they'll have me.
I wouldn't consider it a big achievement unless I kept it forever. LOL I've been a changeling and down a step and up a step for GOD knows how long.
I was more interested in being able to get out of a sticky situation by having the Sire badge. I say this in reference that if I wanted to leave a house or Coven I could and I wouldn't be trapped indefinately in a place whose aims might be different or counter to my own.
Plus having a larger weight given to the rates I make is a nice touch. It deters people from not rating me honestly and dissallows to some level gang ups that are sometimes in abundance in VR.
I joined VR less then a week ago. I'm currently at Phantom, viewed 7886 pages and spent 53.23 hours here. I have rated less then 5% of everything I possiblly could. I am here to meet like minded people, to learn new things and to share my views. So far I have learn quite a bit and have learn to see somethings in new ways. Would I like to make Sire? Sure I do. Do I want to get as fast as I possiblly can? Nope, because I would lose out on quite alot. So far I have meet really nice people who's opinions I look forward to hearing on various topics. Would I be just as active if there was not Status System. Yes I would.
Well yes when or if I find myself within a House or Coven I would work harder to benifit them. Case in point the other day I found myself somehow within a House or Coven and the first thing I did was spend over and hour playing hangman to build favor for myself and the House or Coven. Then out of the blue I was kicked out by the Master/Mistress because they were not ready for new member yet. After speaking to him/her I completely understood and look forward to the day when I may be inducted in that or any House or Coven.
*** Due to the nature of what happen and I am not sure all the reason of how, when, and why I will not mention which House Or Coven so I do not cause any unneed problems within that House or Coven for the parties Involved. Just wanted to make a point of what motivates me.***
FromnothingIcame: thank you for noticing that I actually try to use that grey matter in my head....I too could level up a lot quicker with the quick one or two word anser to threads that many do....or rating everyone a 10 just because it is easier than actually taking the time to read over their profile....but I hold myself to a certain standard in life, I try to think before speaking, speak before acting, and stop before overreacting, in this I am not always successful, but I acknowledge this and always strive to improve myself.
this to me is what being an elder member is about.....growing and learning...so you can help those along the way
And here I am just trying to reach my goal of 5..lol.
I really like being on here. I have met some really cool, interesting, fun, nice people!
I don't know what my goal would be after that IF I even think of another goal for myself on here.
I just really like chatting with everyone. Meeting new people, new coultures etc!
You all have some really good points on this subject! And I thank you for bringing this one up!
Well, I'd like to put in my 2 cents worth now if I may. I haven't been here very long yet. I was in a hurry to get to Caitiff so I could have the chance to join a House or Coven. But now that I'm here, I'm having so much fun and meeting so many really interesting people, that it doesn't matter to me one bit if I never advance again. I am here to learn as much as I can and to meet great friends. When I do join a House or Coven, I may very well change my mind because then I will actually have a clue. lol
I am fascinated by the knowledge that is here. I can't wait to learn more. But I don't think the whole rank thing really matters. For me it's the knowledge. I want to read ever single profile on here to tell you the truth. I am fascinated by the beautiful work everyone is putting into their profiles. I have seen some fantastic ones. I didn't know I was suppose to be paying attention to peoples ranks. lol
For the record, I respect everyone on here from whelp right on up through the ranks to the top. I love it that we can come on here and speak our minds about something that is considered taboo by many on the outside. They just don't know what they are missing. I've met so many really wonderful people here.
Ok, so that's how I feel about this. Now I'm going to go back out there and see what else I can learn before its time for bed.
Thank you
Everyone here is worthy of respect Sire or not....I have spoken to many Sires here and they are all very respectful themselves... I do feel they should be congradulated on their achievement. Lastly I actually don't think one should come here "just" to get a rank and feel higher than everyone else but to really learn and take in knowlege of other lifestyles.
im not here much.... so i doubt ill ever be a sire :)... well i joined in becuase this site is really different from other sites i was in.. here i feel safe... so when i get online for thiose few minutes... or when im sick (yes im a busy lady) then ifeel that here i can say what i feel (without hurting others) and not be flamed for it...
images your words are very wise.. i respect you becuase of your words and not becuase of your status :)
Obviously if you made Sire in 4 1/2 months you are pretty competitive.....
which makes me wonder why you posted this thread... what you don't like being a sire?
And also I was a bit suprised to find you compairing VR to the military.... ( I am assuming you were in the military due to your knowledge of the rank system)....
... However I busted my ass off over 4 years simply to make E-4.... not exactly like making Caitiff in two weeks....
I'm slightly insulted at the reference.
~Simonis~
Ok, my last post was a little bitchy, more so then I meant it to be. I get your point in reference to the site.
However I got a little testy from the military referance.... like I mentioned before, I busted my ass to obtain what I did in the military.... and it hardly compares to this web site... in any way.
Otherwise I agree somewhat with the status bit.... although it does make it a bit more fun at fist then other sites.
~Simonis~
Respect should be given to everyone equally but for some on a higher status like administrator ori n the vr team,a little bit more due to their position.
I mean respect their position, not kissing their ass(excuse my expression but I don't know how to put my words better.)
I became Sire after a year and two months and proud or not don't know,I'm just happy of it.
Anyway the status levels of here are just a site's statuses it's not that the higher you are,the better you are.
We are real people in our life and real people on this site.
That's the way we should be valued, for our person not status.
Basicly I think, its nobodies business, why me or others wanted to be sire, how fast we became sire and if we enjoyed to rate or not rate or whatever. I didnt do it for the 'respect' thing. My friends respect me for who I am and not for what level I have. I earned my respect through the things i did for them and for being a friend. and for the same things they get my respect back. thats one thing i rarely do when rating, i dont look what level someone has. i just dont care. I was chatting to someone for almost a month, till i saw he was far higher then me. did it change anything? no!
and what the rest thinks i couldnt care less. I can see nothing wrong in any speed of leveling. each to their own. Some of us have more time, some have less. some like to dribble in the forums other like to rate and others just like to chat. so why should someone make it a big business if someone becomes sire, changes houses or covens or make their own coven?
I have had my phase of the status system and its just there for me if i level up it means to me that i have gained a little more knoweledge in the site and people and vampires in general, i came here to seek out about myself and make friends aswell. i love it here and even if i hit sire i will still stay because its just a great place where we can better eachother and ourselves by learning more about us.
Personaly although the rating thing is quite fun...I am not particularly bothered wehn I become Sire or not....Although I will be pleased when I reach it.
The pleasure I get out of VR is meeting other likeminded people and getting to know them either through the aid of a pc or meeting tham in real life like at the UK meet up the other week. Even though i could only attend the first half of it and still had to leave early.
I also enjoy the aspect that no matter what I think i know. I can always and often do learn something new about vampires in general.
sorry i didnt know i was not entitled to share my view of this thread.
I don't know much about being a sire but I've heard It has all sorta perks and maybe some day I can be one

again- no perks... just that you are able to carry more weight when rating.
I never understood the big deal about leveling up quickly. Sure, I am excited with each time I gain a level, but its not my goal. I enjoy talking to people here and commenting on the issues in the forums that are of interest. I agree with what many have said before me, anyone could make Sire, It's not too difficult and can be done in a short period of time. All it shows is how much you get on here and rate, trying to gain levels instead of enjoying your time spent here.
Needs backup singers. Heh.
Personally, I pushed for a level high enough that I could post in the vamp box and not have my account deleted if I was unable to log on for an extended period of time.
After that, no worries.
i have to agree with you on this one to gain something that is online only is just, well it shows that some people out there are more determend to be nummber 1 then to sit here and make friends. i come here to lurn new things and to hopefully make some friends in my time of being here, granit i come on here more often then normal but hey bissy lfe style leads to a bissy life

That was my big thing, I wanted to be able to experience all aspects of the site.
When my husband joined he wondered when he would get to a point where he'd feel content at that level. I told him that once he made it to 16 he should feel good about that- he could do anything except be an Acolyte (of which we are already overflowing). He's since surpassed even that level, and is very much like I was. It's like getting tattoos, you gotta have the next one. Potato chips, you can't east just one of those either :)
i agree i got 2 tat's and im planing on geting more lol. but the thing is about this site is most of the people out there hardly ever post on the forums so trying to talk to people on here and make friends is some what hard for me atleast
lol I just think the first part of what you said is so funny because you are a sire yourself lol.
Well, I guess I am going to jump ship and play devil’s advocate for the Sire title. A Sire, in vampire society is defined and thought of very closely to how Cancer has defined it in the “status system” section. “Sire” is a form of address to a superior, Lord or Lady, if you will, perhaps on VR not with reference to a “king”. Vampire society is hierarchal; this is why the House structure system went into place, forced inductions and all.
Now when I say superior, with reference to VR, do I mean superior as a being? Would I argue that anyone with the rank of Sire was morally superior to others? No, I would not, because how could I know? The “superiority” comes from achievement; whether it took you 4 months to achieve the level or 5 years, you did it, and the highest percentage of people don’t.
I think the achievement shows a commitment to a space where you feel comfortable; it shows a person’s ability to successfully work within a set of rules (the Prince’s); and frankly, does indeed establish you as a leader amongst the VR community. At minimum, people understand that you know how to “get the job done”. More liberally, Sires generally come off as "real", well-spoken individuals that make intelligent and on-point additions to discussions. Sires are representational of many excellent people on VR, personality “types” aside.
Some may use covens as an emergency escape hatch, but I believe some Sires truly believe they have a unique message to share with others, a philosophy that is comforting to a smaller percentage. If someone has been on VR long enough to learn the rules of treating others well, understand their power is a direct grant from the Prince and not a personal free-for-all, and have something they are really trying to teach or share, I think that’s a beautiful thing.
And sometimes, my friend, the attainment of Sire is about simple strength of character that shines. Whether you were driven for other reasons to attain the rank of Sire, I don’t think it’s any cosmic irony that a person like you rises to the top of a large site as a leading voice. It’s not to say that on any given day people might not disagree with you; but reluctant leader or not, you certainly are a strong voice and an asset to this community.
I used to hear so many strong voices competing for positions in threads; exciting discussions that didn’t just raise questions of interest, but answered them. These days, on any given day, the forums become boiling cauldrons of mediocrity.
One thing I do know about persons who are Sires-if they write a thread- I read it, because it most often an escape from the mundane, regardless of topic. I read the threads of others too, of course, and there are many fine examples of good thread writing; but the point here is the position of “Sire”, and I have yet to come across a thread from a Sire that reads, “wut do you guyz like aboat vampirz”, and so forth. I believe it is a position to be respected on merit alone, and images, I think you are an excellent example of why Sires deserve that respect.
@Sevenn: excellent post! It is not the Sire achievement which, on one hand recognizes your devotion and addiction to the site, but is the things you learn along the way, the things you share with others...
Being a Sire is not just a right, it is also a great responsability...
Ya know I've been a Sire for a while, and the only achievment that came from it was my coven. I always wanted to make my own and have members be like family. It's really great, but that's the only good thing about being a Sire. Oh yea and also not having to ever level up anymore. Now I just come on and talk to people and work on my coven. :)
I want people not to be intimidated by my status, or the fact that I've been here for a while. I'm always online and available, and I enjoy meeting new people. I mean that's why I came here to meet more people with intrests like mine. There's no reason to fear or respect a Sire more then anyone else, I am just a normal person behind my computer screen...and I don't bite sometimes! ;)
I respect someone for their manner and character and not only for a title they hold simple as that . Sire is a title. I do respect people who have learnt on the site and contribute to it in a positive way. If anything the longer you are here the more you learn. I would give a Sire the respect and acknowledgement for that. Without question. But my total respect comes in time. I dont judge a book by its cover.
I see status as a direct result of me wanting be here and write and enjoy many of the contacts I have made....I havent put much thought into reaching "Sire" status...I simply like being here...
I've been here a year and a half and am not as yet Sire. I'm in no rush, this place isn't about making the highest level or being the best at something.
If I really wanted it that badly, I'd have got it by now. I'm here to make friend, learn and share the little information I have.
Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to be Sire, would be an achievment. But it's nothing, it doesn't help me in the real world, doesn't make people respect me in the street.
This is a website, an online community. It's not totally real.
When I found Vampire Rave, which happened when I was searching for vampire jewelry, I was ecstatic to find that there are people out there with similar interests as mine. So yes, there is a part of me who wants to advance levels and what not, but moreso I am here for the people. I am thrilled to find this corner of the web that I can retreat to and be myself in without fear of having judgement passed on me. That is my honest opinion. This is an excellent thread by the way.
it's nice to hear an honest opinion that might go against what people might think
I didn't take the time to read ALL the responses, however, I have no doubt that someone took the time to give a colorful reply.
I know that I will, ultimately, make Sire...unless I really mess up and have my profile suspended or deleted...I'm in no great rush to be one...that is the top of the pile...no where to go but down or out...initially, when I was an annoying newbie...and I was...I wanted to level up as quickly as possible...but for now I'm just enjoying being in a House.
i get what your saying and i understand it. i have days on here when i spend a lot of time because something peaks my instrest, and others when im on here for 5 min. then on my way.
I've enjoyed checking out this discussion. It's nice to get the points of view of others who have gained levels and see what they think about the site.
I'm slowly but surely crawling up the level ladder and am enjoying every minute of it. I've gotten to chat up some interesting souls and found some info in the database that I wouldn't have otherwise seen just surfing the web. I have to say that VR is one of the better online communities out there and it's pretty cool to be a part of it.
My motivation to becoming a Sire would have to be that if I wanted to (which I don't and doubt I will by the way) I could get out of my House and not have to worry about a forced induction.
I'm enjoying my time here and prefer to make new friends and chat in the forums versus rating for hours on end every day just to make the next level.
I'll admit that I'm as competitive as the next person...oh hi next person...but it's not the be-all and end-all of my time here.
That would have to be my goal of making new friends and being as helpful as I can be to those that need help. If we didn't already have a gazillion Acolytes, I would apply to be one myself. I enjoy helping others.
as to motivation not being public..I agree that if you don't want it public then simply don't post in a thread asking for public opinion...it's really common sense..not an insult or a declaration that you aren't welcome...
considering that you must continue to rate new ppl and such to remain a sire or the numbers game will catch you...I think it's fair to say I will never attain it...
since I rarely rate anyone anymore unless their profile is truly exceptional....since I rate what I feel is fair...and I won't rate anyone under a 6....if the rate is worth less that 6 then it is simply not worth the rating at all in my eyes...
mostly I read lots of the forums..but only post in those worthy of activating brain mass....and this number dwindles more all the time.....it's a shame really
but back to the point....would I mind being a sire....probably not...do I care that i'm not one....not in the sleightest...
do I congradulate those who are....
only those who do something positive with it....I do recall a few sires who have been removed for one reason or another....and in every case I know of I agree they earned their rewards...
but most of the sires show their worth.....
I have stoped careing about rateings since I recive 10s and 1s it dosen't matter I just enjoy my time here. I belive this system works well but some of the helpers should be more knowledgeable about profile help they try hard but when you need tech help you need tech help thanks for your effort and most of all enjoy your time here . enchanted
I know kat is very helpfull she has always been there to give me advice as well as being a friend
i started off that why but it is hard to make time to get on like i did when i frist started. i have been at the same lvl for like 3 weeks.
You know what, for someone who's been here long (forgive the lack of modesty on that one.) It was like a contest, who's going to be the in THE TOP, who's going to be the first one who'd reach the Sire level (and by the way,it's Ms. HellChildDami, that's a lil' factoid.)
But you know, it's not YOUR status level or HOW many posts you've made OR (even) how many profiles you've rated AND stamped. No.
What have you DONE in the Rave? For yourself and/or for everyone's delight? Have you shared or helped someone with something that concerns the Rave? (Profile fixing..and stuff like that)
THAT (for me at least) is the point in coming here.
you have a good point its not getting the top lvl what counts.
its haveing fun while you are on here
Damn straight, Dark God!
Have fun - in a CIVILIZED way. Contribute. Help people. Enjoy, and NO RUDE FLAMINGS and rule breakings.
It works me.
desiree69 are you just posting that same cookie cutter line (that someone else used) in multiple threads for post count?
I have to admit I'm not really focused on leveling up. I just enjoy the site, when I level up great. But I'm not focused on it entirely to the exclusion of everything else. When you do you miss the point of the site. At least that's my opinion.
Like so many, I have an addictive personality. I hate the thought of not being up at the top level, or at least working to get there. I've been like that in every video game I've ever played. That said, I'm not trying to rush things here. I do not spend hours rating. In fact, I'm only at a level three in rating. Sure, I may leave forum posts that could be unsaid, with at least a little thought of increasing my level, but for the most part, I'm using this site to meet new friends and learn new things about myself and the world. Damn, doesn't that sound noble and altruistic? Well, this post should help bump me up another level . . .

I joined VR because my friend (Hi Images!) had a link on her MySpace page. When I first joined, I was welcomed by all from Whelps to Sires. My idea then, was to level up to Caitiff- just to be in a House/Coven. (BTW- Madadh rocks!) =)
Now I've been here for awhile, I'd found myself becoming a "rating whore" just to level up. Not so much anymore thankfully. I've slowed down to 'smell the flowers'- so to speak. There are many great people on here worth getting to know- no matter their status. I'm sure one day I will become Sire- but there's no rush. Besides- 13 is my lucky number, lol.
Rave on!
After being on the site for over a year now, I find it is not really important to become a Sire. I stopped rating for awhile because it was boring and people would just have nonsense profiles.
I like to read about a person and see what they are like. I even like to see thier taste in the way they set thier profile up.
After HellChildDami made the FIRST ever sire, I really didn't care bout it. I thought that it was a big deal for maybe the first few people to achieve. Now it just is pointless it's the end of the levels. There is nothing really after that level. When you hit that level things don't fall out of the ceiling. Balloons and streams don't fly out and a sign doesn't suspend itself and say CONGRATS YOU'RE A SIRE!! You can leave a house or coven when you reach sire. Which isn't that important to me because I dig my house BUNCHES. I am the assistant house master of the Maddanites..hehe. There really ins't a big deal in getting there to fast.
I think it's great if you get there but, I could careless if I get there or not. I like posting in the forums, checking out peoples profiles/portfolios, and just crusin around the site.
As far as people being scared of sire's. i am sure they are people that are kind of new and really don't "get it". I have NEVER been scared to talk to anyone on the site. Not even the people that have been around since the beginning of time. I don't talk to many people. I just like being here.
I know one day I will recieve Sire-dom. I don't want a thread made or to even make one. It is just a level I know I will achieve.
I just dig that I know I have gave 47 hours to a site that I dig. Some might say that is sad. lol
I'd love to make Sire one day. For the feeling of accomplishment and showing of devotion to the site. I'll admit that if this site didn't have such a unique, interesting structure, I probably wouldn't have stuck around. I have a love for vampires and the occult, don't get me wrong! But I like VR's structure. I like that you can rate and be rated. I like the intriguing status titles and such. I like that you can post your beliefs and opinions on things and get recognized for it. I LOVE THE HOUSE SYSTEM! I like the feeling of unity people get from it, I like that I'm learning a lot about people. I like that while playing games, I can meet people from other houses that I probably wouldn't have met on the site otherwise. I also like that I can introduce people to this great site and be rewarded for it. VR RULES!
To be honest if it meant that I couldn't be in a house where there is a feeling of unity, (I just got inducted into one myself) I wouldn't want to be a sire. True, there would definately be a sense of accomplishment but I'd much rather be in my house. :o) :o)
Disregard my last post.. lol I just read the part in the VR Manuel about sires and apparently you can be in a house/coven while being a sire. :o)
I love the competition. I love trying to race my friends at getting to a certain level before they do. but i also like lookin at different peoples profiles and reading the different forums.
Well...when I first joined I was striving to get to where my account could not be deleted due to inactivity. Now that I have achieved that I have slowed down to check things out more and enjoy the site more fully. I am in a coven now, which is nice in the fact that there are people there that wanted me there and I am hoping to make closer friendships from it and have an online family. I look forward to meeting more people here on VR that are interested in the same things as me. This is a great place and I am very glad that my husband found it! I am not on here much as of late due to major surgery. But...I get in here as often as I can just to be able to keep up with friends and how they are doing. As for leveling up...I applaud all who have reached sire in whatever amount of time they have accomplished this. I know it takes alot of online time to do so. However.....for me...levels are not as important as the friends that can be made and helping my coven family in ratings as I can.
I tend to shy away from the high level people on here a bit due to the fact that I know they must be bombarded by people with questions of all sorts. Not that I would not like to be friends with any of them if it should arise....but....well....I am also not a very forward person and usually others message me first and we chat from there. Well...I guess I have nothing further to add. This is just my opinion and view on things.
Blessed Be
actually vixen..we don't get hugely bombarded with questions...well maybe the acolytes do..but they volunteered for that madness....lol
I get the odd question..but nothing big..
and if I cant answer it I just refer them to whichever acolyte I see online
thats not a very nice thing to say to someone who has to work very hard to achieve such a level.....you should congrats them instead.......i have a different opinion of you now.
I think the sane people have taken the view "Get to the level you can post, and not get binned if you loose access, then take your time and enjoy!"
Which is certainly my plan.
I'd be amazed if I get beyond level 15 this year!
I'm not even bothered if I get asked/forced to join a coven/house, not a biggy to me!
However he opportunity to help someone he needs/deserves it, Jump at the chance!
That was really what I tried to level for. I was pretty content with just surfing through the database at first, but then I saw the other ways to interact with the community. The forum, the vampbox and have to say I got a little envious. So I checked out what I needed in order to at least participate in the forums.
I would like to continue to gain levels, since there are other little perks that look interesting to me, but it's not the only reason i'm on the site.
i used to be very excited about leveling up because there were privilleges associated with each level. now that i am at level 20 there isnt much more i can earn, therefore leveling up doesnt matter that much to me :)
im gonna admit at first it was try to move up as fast as i could but the longer that im here its more of spending time here and getting to know some good people who have the same interests as me
Ooookay!
I’ve been here about a month and a half now, and I think I’m leveling up pretty fast. I don’t spend hours rating, and I don’t post a lot of nonsense threads or replies. I’m on here a lot. *addicted as hell* And VERY active while I’m on, doing a multitude of things.
I do care about my status. I care about my profile rating too. I work at both, but mostly I’m active in my hose and doing things for others here.
It makes me sad that so many seem to think gaining status and making real friendships here are somehow mutually exclusive things. They aren’t. I’ve been on a goodly number of web based communities. There is only one other, where I’ve made friends I would love to talk to and hang out with in real life. That one is LJ, and most of my friends on there are people I’ve known in real life for many years. This place is special, it’s brought out a lot of stuff in me I thought was all but dead, among them are a formidably intense team spirit, and a fierce competitive streak.
Yes I want to level up. I’d like to do so quickly too.
Do I think it means I’ll be better than those with less status? God no! Of course not. I do think it would be a boon to my house which I’m quite fond of. It’s a good feeling to meet a goal like that quickly too. I don’t even want to start a coven. I just want to be at the top. I don’t think that in itself is a bad thing, as long as I’m never a jerk about it. *If you catch me being a jerk, call me on it, pronto. I promise I’ll listen*
Atyourwindow: when commenting that you didn't like something in a thread of a few hundred responses..you might want to reference which post you were referring to.....
just a thought
Being a sire may be a goal for me but its not my 'i'm gonna have a paprty for this roal'. Although the Rave is a good place and its members are growing from the vampire comunity its not like the title sire on here means anything in the outside word (even the vampiric out side world). I still think it would be cool to have the title though and be able to run and own a coven.
well ive read all the post on this subject and feel i have a long way to go why because i feel friendships are more important than just hurrying your way up to sir if you hurry up there can u actually say you earned it or hurried up the ladder by all the ways avalibale to you. id rather take my time make friends and move up slowly.
why cant people just strive for everything that this site has to offer????
I'm on here a lot cuz the people are nicer than a lot of other journal sites and cuz I have nothing else to do.
Shadowgirl
i want to be on level sire cause i want to make my own coven.

mearhinas- I hope that would be the case. That's what I have done. I think I have been a success. I thankfully am in a position with far more friends than I could ever count in comparison to people that might have issues with me.
I still have goals here. I want to put my writer self to use and submit to our Articles section- I have been holding off because I don't want to rush the muse, or have something unoriginal. We have fun things in the works in my House- there's always something :)
I merely opened this thread to find out the specific reasons people are going for the gold. Again, there is no right or wrong answer. Personal motivations are what they are :)
im a level 13, and not a higher one, becuae i dont rate profiles or anything like that. i spend my time on VR talking with the people i enjoy talking to, interacting with the people in my house, trying to help out in the house as much as possible, and generally just having a good time. i dont see a need to rush my way to a higher level. if i get one i get one. oh yay.
I like moving through the levels, and I have enough of a competitive streak to admit I'm goal oriented...
Having said that, I've been on since October, I've made it a fair way up the "ladder" so to speak, but the ladder is exponential, so it will be many more months if not years at this rate before I make it to sire...
... and that's fine with me...
I care more about making real contributions, talking to the people I care about, and *gasp* taking care of my interests outside VR and the net in general... (I know, I'm a heretic).

This thread gathered enough attention ;) I want to thank everyone who participated and understood what I was saying without being so quick to judge me- who really read all that I had to say- and replied.
I am a Sire on Vampire Rave that respects everyone who gives respect as well. That doesn't mean I am better, I am no better than anyone else. It simply means I was able to meet the requirements for level 28- and that I obviously wanted to.
Keep utilizing the site for all it's worth. It's fun.
