I have been thinking about a topic which I haven't seen posted anywhere else in the forums. Have any of you ever thought about what it would truly be like to be immortal? What would you do with all of your time? How would you spend all of eternity? How would you live? What would you do to improve your lifestyle?
that is a very good quetion i probaly try to learn every thing there is to learn what about you
I would go to school and get degrees in all the areas of my interest. I would learn how to speak french and spanish. I would travel to other countries. I would try to help others because I would feel obligated due to the knowledge that everyone else would die.

As it is now I do everything I can to help others. That is still what I would do.... If I were immortal, you could just think of me as a guardian angel. My whole life would be dedicated to others that needed help.
The only thing selfish I can think of is that I would quicken my journey to become a famous artist. That is my life long dream and what I strive for. If I were immortal.... I would hurry that along, with less of a journey on that road, I would be able to enjoy life doing what I love.... being with my daughter, helping others, and my art. :)
As for myself I would have to say that I would both travel the world and obtain all the knowledge that I could. Knowledge is power and the more knowledge one possesses, especially in an immortal being, the more powerful they will be. With this knowledge I would obtain the wealth to establish an estate where I would be able to retreat to in the event that I needed a rest from all of that travel and education.
I am sure that I would dedicate myself to helping others though because that is what I do at present. However, with the additional knowledge, wealth and power this would be a much easier task.
We are immortal through our children and the mark we leave on this earth while we are still here. I wouldn't want to be immortal. I like the way things are. Nature needs to keep a balance, and if we are to be immortal it would upset the balance of nature. And why linger here when there is so much more else to experience in other life times.
what would i do? I would go to college to get all the degrees that I wanted...Then I would learn many different languages so I can travel to all the places that I know that I will never get to see ... I would learn everything that you could possibly not do in one lifetime.
Anything I wanted, I would have all the time in the world to accomplish things. ;-)
Seriously though, I think it would suck to be immortal. Really, who wants to live forever?

First off, I'd definitely stay out of trouble with the law.. 'cause a life sentence in the case of an immortal would be.. brutal to say the least.
And I agree with whoever said it - it would be a quest for knowledge. I'd go everywhere and try to learn everything.
Nah, who am I kidding? It would just give me even more time to procrastinate....
If one was truly immortal and spent all of that time on a quest for knowledge after a few 1000 years you'd probably become a God, or hopefully figure out how to die.

I don't think anyone could truly be IMMORTAL by the exact definition of the word...
Like I've said, the cosmos have a recycling program and we're recycleable. Have the little 3-circle-arrow stamp and everything.
Would an "immortal" being really survive nuclear holocaust? Survive a comet crashing into the Earth? Survive the sun expanding and gobbling up the Earth?
Eventually, there would be an end.... there would have to be.
I think I would go crazy....I would do what I could, but ultimately it would have to lead to insanity
I have thought about this before and I came up with I don't think I would want to live forever.... seeing all my loved ones die before me .... would suck as of now I have family members that have died and I couldn't even say goodbye to them... to be truely Immortal would really suck... who would want to live in loneliness like that
Eventually, you'll lose your mind. You might ask for more power after being immortal. You'll see everything that has happened as years passes by. And it might be too much to look at. You might ask to finally die if you can't take being forever live. This is my opinion for immortallity. It's a gift and a curse. You get to live forever but not your mortal love one. Not your mortal friends. Not your mortal families who doesn't possess the same gift you have. But this is just the nagitive side of immortallity.
The good side is that you do live forever. And can never die.You get to explore the whole world without worry of aging. You may learn new powers as time goes on. If you put effort in learning. Your strength is limitless. But not always there if you stop training yourself to be strong. So basically you get to achieve everything you want.
As an immortal you can never die. But you could still be trapped for a thousand years or so. Just don't piss off the real gods. lol Though I don't believe you can really "not" die. I think you can still be killed by another immortal. Or a mortal with the powers of the gods. Sorry, too much mythology.
Anyways, if I was immortal, I probably be like Superman and help out people. But Not too much because I don't want people to become too depended on me. The city needs to take care of itself. Unless it's something huge like a power plant going crazy or something. Or Godzilla attacking Japan. lol (joke) To pass the time of being immortal I'll take up the time to learn swordsman ship. Nothing else for now.
study acient texts and go to diffrent countries learning as much as possible.
I wouldnt want to be immortal because if bad things started happening then you'd be stuck in them and be possibly tortured and in pain forever, since you cant die.
I would take the time to sit back and watch how mankind manages to always seem to do things the wrong way , instead of being one of those that do wrong
One I wouldnt want to be an immortal as all the people you love would die off and leave you all alone and possibly cause you to go mad.
With that said I think I would learn all the things I have an interest in..Well there goes possibly a few hundred years then what????
Be bored travel is fine but how much can you really travel, being immortal wouldnt make you smarter then you are now necessarily just means you would live forever perhaps you migh think due to time and age expiriences it would make you smarter..I have seen a number of people who believe this age does not mean wisdom I have seen many young people far wiser then some older people..I think what it might give you is a whooping ego a belief that you are superior to all others then you but being a egotist isnt the same thing as wise nor smart
Couldn't you get smarter, not from getting older, but from being exposed to more ideas than one person has time for in their life times. Imagine, an immortal could read every library book in the world. They would see the evolution of different species and ideas.
ravenna052199, in some cases yes you could but again this depends on the persons basic personality in the first place..I think many might get the I'm superior to you attitude going and well become just another asshole who thinks they know it all..
I like I said have meet a number of people who are very young yet very wise, these people might be able to handle being an immortal. Why though go through the centuries seeing things endlessly repeat themselves over and over again.
You could go to them say hey I am an immortal so and so did that in 1990 this was the outcome yada yada ( and probably be hurt someway due to fear)People by nature seem to either want to repeat history or just don't want to learn the lessons of history..We tend to ignore the lessons maybe because the subject of history taught in schools seem to dry and uninteresting.
The Immortal could develop a whooping ego and think hey I can run the show again to what end???
Because he knows what happened in the past, people tend not to want leaders like that and a very real possiblity lays in over use of possible powers and knowledge used wrongly..
Utopia is a nice concept but it is only a concept, as most leaders that claim to want to give us a utopian society only really want power over you and don't want you to think for yourself...We already have to much of that happening now many blindly follow people who promise things without questions asked..
Things all things should be questioned and never taken at face value...
I again wouldnt want the responsibility of immortality because with that kind of power jsut the fact you live forever brings an even bigger responsibility to others as well as to yourself..
This again is only my opinion..
You're right. People could become egostical. For me though, I learn for me. I don't need to use it to put people down or try to run the show. I also don't need to show it off. The dangers that you spoke of could happen to anyone, mortal or immortal.
Ravenna your right and it has happened with a great many people..I would love to have unlimited time to learn jsut well really dont see the point of living forever.....Even if it was only to learn new things I would mourn the passing of to many people I love I already have enough of that as it is now....
I would love to be immortal because you could learn everything that has happened in the past and learn every language ever spoken. Not to mention, if you really wanted to help with knowledge being power, you could advise future leaders as to what would work and what wouldn't because instead of reading about something and having to worry about what parts were left out, you would have been there and been apart of that so you would be speaking from experience instead of somebody elses recorded experience. If you got lonely after all of your friends and loved ones passed, since you have forever to deal with, you could just start over because over time you would get used to the deaths of anyone who is close to you and would basically become numb to the fact of a "natural" part of life. That is only my opinion and viewpoint, and everyone is entitled to that.
I honestly think of the idea of immortality more frightening than death. To have to watch all of my loved ones grow old and die. I would not be able to get close to anyone. Most likely I would just lock myself up somewhere.
I really believe the thought of living forever would drive most people mad.
I would love to live for ever with the people I really love, but on the other hand living for ever its kinda depressing doing, dont know.
On one hand it would be amazing to watch and learn from the history and people that come and go. But on the other hand would be quite lonely unless i found someone like myself.
I would love to study art more and listerature and that perhaps in itself would take several lifetimes.And I think myself somewhat inventive, there would be things and people to occupy most of my time.
I cannot say for sure because until faced with such a decision one never knows for certain what one will do.
I would like to think I would work in the background of the world to better it in small ways using the knowledge and wisdom gained from time.
I agree that I would not wish to be be immortal for all the reasons already given but if it were to happen I would like to travel the world and learn of other people and cultures and languages. I'd try to help others as I could but I'm sure I am too selfish to devote all my time to others. Exploring would be my driving goal, the world around us and knowledge. Between the two, I doubt boredom would be a problem.
This is a great question and one I have thought about before. I don't think I would like to be immortal. Eternity on my own? No daytimes? Watching people die around me while I remained unchanged? I wouldn't like that. I see death as the end of something, maybe a cycle but a release as well. I think to never have that knowledge of death, well I guess it depends on the individual... But it would be weird for me. I would like some of the perks like always having time but would you every accomplish anything or appreciate what you have if you know you are untouched by death? Hmmm I'm going to have to think more about this one...
Immortality? I think not! I would suspect that it would become emotionally unbearable as you go on lifetime after lifetime and you watch your loved ones die. No thanks!
i will be myself and i gonne travel tho full world around :d
What is there that one could do if immortal that one couldn't begin to do today? So... what are you waiting for?
I could learn whatever I wanted ..I would have all the time in the world...I could do all the things I have ever wanted to do.
If I were immortal, I'd probably spend a 'life time' being devout in each major religion, just to see the differences, spend a 'life time' learning each martial arts, from each different culture, and just then, travel the world learning many different languages and cultures, watch everyone else grow, and adjust, watch societies die and change, and try and help whoever i could
If i were immortal i would spend my days watching and learning and evolving as time went on
all this "oh immortality would be awful, i wouldn't want it" is exactly the same as oscure nobodies living in poverty saying "oh, i wouldn't want to be rich and famous, it must be awful" you are just trying to convince yourselves you dont want it, coz you know you can't have it.
it depends i suppose. i wouldn't want to be immortal, but be an eternal outcast, living in perpetual pain and torment, forever shunned, never sated, unable to appreciate what the universe has to offer.
what if the cost of immortality was my imagination? what if to earn it, you had to count every single atom in the universe, then put them all in alphabetical order?
on the other hand, what if it wasnt like that? what if every day of your immortal life you awake with the fresh enthusiasm and curiosity of a child?
is this a hypothetical question, or a serious offer? what are the rules?
i think about it all the time, I need to find a real life vampire, not make beleive bullshit
I'm talking bout death of the body and soul. I truely believe that we never leave, there is somthing totally with in our self've.
I would research about anything and everything. Try to help others when I could and take care of my family, and try to teach them what I know to be better people.
I think after the first 300 years I would be bored and kill myself.

But if you could simply kill yourself, are you really immortal?
That's the question I asked earlier.. what is the defined limitation on immortal. The concept is "will live forever" but what can? What can survive a cosmic catastrophie?
Is there a limitation to immortality as we perceive it?
If I was immortal, i would at first live a lavished rich lifestyle but as the years went on i would travel learning about the past and always doing whatever i felt like.
Like a lot of people have said, I'd probably devote my time to knowledge after I have provided a good income to live off of.
Then I suppose I'd take an interest in traveling, as well as doing random things that many people don't have enough time for. (Like skydiving. =P)
I would do what I could to improve the environmental state of the world, travel, learn everything I can, but at the same time hate having to watch all my loved ones die.
First and foremost I would be sure to secure a financial nestegg to last a few thousand years to start. Then I would travel the world by night. Then, I would settle into my ridiculously large house and read and study and learn as much as there is to know about the human condition and the road to forever.
I would travel to the four corners of the earth.
Go everywhere.
Except for Cleveland.
Education would be a plus...learning different languages. I would probably be a historian or antique dealer...
well my life aint that much fun so im not sure id want to live it forever
lol
If I were immortal I would start off by finding out how to return to mortality. THEN I would set out to travel the world, help others, learn and teach. I could do all these things secure in the knowledge that if it became to much to continue I had an "out".
Truthfully I would not wish to be immortal. I feel it would be far more of a curse than a blessing.
If I were immortal I would have to back pack and travel the world, through all the most cultural places, and learn of there history, and there culture, then set my life to learning to find a way of cureing certen things like diseases and sickness's.
It would depend if I was immortal alone or i knew of others teh same
I'd take up extreme sports and only eat things that clog your arteries and rhyme with french words. I would read War and Peace because there's finally be time, and I would say yes when someone asked me to play Monopoly.
I'm being silly, but imagine...time would no longer be a factor. I would stop being in such a damn hurry and I would do fast things, things that just aren't sensible.
And I absolutely would NOT lose my mind because there is no end to what you can appreciate, learn, and adapt to. I'd find a way NOT to turn into Eternal Emo. No way I'd feel sorry for myself. I'd feel grateful.
Great question! I would learn all I could, travel as much as a person could.....especially to all the major historical areas.
Well, if I was immortal I would defintely have alot of time on my hands. I guess I would travel, go to school. and after many years write history books. Since I doubt I could pass them off as eyewitness accountss (even though I would have lived through centuries of history), I would keep items from each time period that I could use as proof of what happened way back in the past.
i would just enjoy everything possible, and not really have to hurry to do it..lol, not like i wont have the time or anything
the reason none of us could stand being imortal is this very thread.
it started as a cool idea, some cool thoughts. then as time went on it just seemed to drag. people "us" made it not cool or fun anymore.
too many good points for and against.
~~~~~id be he-man~~~~~
and build and live in castlegreysckull;)
Personally I would not want to be immortal, the pain of loving people only to watch them age and die would be too much for me to bear.
However if I was immortal out of lack of choice I would spend my time travelling the world immersing myself in other cultures and languages. Definately gain as much knowledge as possible and be a guardian and protector of the innocent.
i would go to school a whole bunch of times and learn as much as possible. then i'd probably look for someone to spend that time with..someone else who is immortal or someone who is willing to become immortal.
i would lean everything there is then build a bussniess and eventually rule the world lol
i would learn as much as i can about all the subjects that interest me. stalk the human race, and enjoy what i do.
probably be alone for a while, but i am used to it. mainly after my friends have all died. but i would still have fun
si j'étais un immortel je do my best to serve humanity and try and get us off this rock before it dies. I would also take on the persute of finding our creator. that should take up an eternity.
The only thing about me that would probably change is that I might go insane.... Oh wait, too late for that. lol. I'd rather die than be immortal. I don't want to be ageless. To see everyone around me die knowing that I couldn't join them because, let's face it, there's no way I'm killing myself. lol. Not to mention I couldn't ever take a picture of myself again because someone down the line would notice if I looked exactly the same 100 years later. That would suck even though I hate cameras. :D
I kinda agree with RaiMarie, I would think it would drive you nuts! If I was though, I guess I would try to help people as much as I could! Learn & travel as much as possible! Maybe become really smart & cure some of the diseases that are slowly killing people!
I would have to say, travelling the world, learning everything there is to learn, enjoy the mysteries that the world still has left to enjoy...
I would watch how the disease called humans manages to always skrew everything up.... and I would never fall inlove
I have seen quite a few die and some I loved to. you get over it in time and eventualy you become a part of a comunity rather than a person that needs to be with a set group of people. I do not fear immortality and would call it a blessing. alas its not for this life thats for sure and I dont intend on coming back this time.
When I think about it it seems like so much fun, there is so much you could do. Then you think of the costs, death of loved ones, seeing the suffering in this world evolve...I guess is just depends on the kind of person you are, if you can live without ever falling in love, living as a loner.
idd probly learn everything there is to be learned and i would probly go back to school to beacome the one and only person to get his mastered in everything.
=invest in the stock market
=study music and art
=student
I would like to think I'd use the time to do what I cannot fit into the days now but I expect the urge to learn will cease as there is no sense of urgency. With the pain of seeing others move on from their current lives, I'm likely to become a recluse. The only thing I'd achieve is to distance myself from all, become a recluse with the world's biggest library.
For me i would have to say i would go back to college and learn everything i wanted, i would also travel and help everyone i could.
But i would hate to be immortal why becuase everyone else around you would die everyone you ever loved and cared for doing that forever would drive me nuts and i would hate to lose my love like that. So im kinda happy im not. lol.
well I would spend most of my time learning everything i could
I think everything would be the same for me.....I would continue to go on with life just the same.
except sooner or later I know that I would grow tired of it as the world goes by time and time again.....then i would wish for death
True immortality would have its ups and downs...I would spend my time traveling the world and find ways to see my kids more, but when the rest of the world is born and then dies and you live ultimately alone in the end.....So I dont know if its always a good thing to be immortal.
if i were immortal, i would take over and make the world how i wanted it, or if i was an undead vampire i would make an army of vampires and take over the world!!!!!!!!!
good question id live life with my self read all i can go to school and start a good life if the world dont end before i turn immortal!
*laughs evily*
good thread interesting id spend my life with my dad and mom and make there lives a hell of alot easier read everything i know and tell my mom n dad i love them much, and thank them for raising me the way i am today...
If I were immortal, I would risk every thing I can. Jump off cliffs, do the things I do now because I would lose my life. and I would make sure I lived everyday, or night, to the best and never stop until I was far to tired to do anymore XD
what would the accumulated interest be on $100 if you assumed a 5% rate over a period of 600 years?
I would relish the idea of being immortal, if for no other reason than to learn everything that I could about everything that interests me. I would enjoy having the freedom that goes with immortality, as far as traveling, etc.
But I think that the one thing I would look forward to the most would be the ability to see how the world changed over the centuries- it could never be boring, because it would always be changing-unlike vampires of old, when things took hundreds of years to change, these days things change at such a pace you would have to be immortal to keep up with it all and to learn everything new, as well as the past. Just the idea of seeing so many achievements, advances, etc. would be worth any price.
i couldent be emortal. im too in love with death. i want it so bad.
I agree with Sacred on educating myself,
but as for the reality of it, if you were truly immortal i think it would be a lonely existance really. Youd see everyone you knew eventually grow old and die, unless you made them immortal as well, but lets face the hard fact that not everyone could be turned immortal because death is natures way of controlling population, plus lets say you turned everyone into vampires, so no one died...what are you going to feed on? Supposedly in almost every bit of vampire lore, animal blood altho it will contain a person for a time, lacks the nutrients and things a vampire needs to live, so you wouldnt be able to survive on animals for long.
interesting question...id live much like i do now only take more risks xD
interesting question...id live much like i do now only take more risks xD
interesting question...id live much like i do now only take more risks xD
With all the time on my side. I would take the time to just travel. Live in one country for 50 to 75 years and move on.
If, I was immortal I would do whatever I wanted to, since I would not have to worry about any final judgement day. I would be living forever and would cease to worry about where my soul would be spending eternity. I would not be completely evil, but my morals would not be the same as humans who would be worrried about the afterlife.
I'd be a vigilante dress up in a shiny costume and fight crime from the shadows. When i get bored of that i'd write a book and do a Lestat, rock band and groupies i'm sure that would do me for eternity or until global warming ravages the earth.
I disagree with you karnstein ... I know for fact that I wouldn't want to live forever... I have loved ones know that are dieing...... why would I want to see more of them grow old and die and I stay the same and never change... I wouldn't want to see my great great great grandchildren and ect... grow old and die before me either.... would you really want to see everyone that you love die and be in lonelyness... not me...
i think being immortal would be boring as hell and the fact it would send every other non mortal thing into existence.. not to mention the insanity that comes with depressiong losing one loving mate after another over the milenia.. too depressing and want to die.. but how?
