I have always wondered and found virtually no research on wether or not all human servants eventually go mad, crazy, insane....etc. If anyone can point me in the direction of where I can find information on this it would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Renfield was the most famous human servant I know of for a vampire, and there was Eagor for Dr Frakenstien. They are the only ones I can think of, so I guess that dosen't help much.

The "Human Servant" of a vampire behaves exactly the way the author of the story wishes them to.

The fictional depiction of a vampire using a human servant in order to guard his body during daylight hours has become a fairly solid part of the vampire mythology now. Usually, the servant is convinced that with time and loyalty, the vampire will someday grant the human the gift of being a vampire. Often called thralls because of their near slave like loyalty, they were rarely given the gift they so fanatically pursued. Most of the vampires in fiction treated these servants as toys or fools that did their bidding because they were weak. Perhaps this subconscious knowledge of being used is what drove them mad. Renfield in particular ate bugs and small animals in his zest for trying to emulate his master.

In later works by various authors, these thralls became supernatural in their own right (either being ghouls or 'skin bags' full of the bugs they ate like Fright Night). Though some later servants were more aware of their role and others more as companions and less a slave, they all seemed to aspire to gain enough good favor to be made a vampire themselves. The only case in modern fiction I recall where this in fact happened was in the movie Vampire In Brooklyn where upon placing the ring on his finger, the ghoul servant became a vampire.

I found this so far for you -

The rich vampires for servants where they can have – depending on gender – humans. The general ruling is the male vampires have a distinct preference for young girls as servants, the female vampiresses often prefer young men. Where it is not possible to have human servants Vampires will often go for one of the other races, like Werewolves, for their servants. In fact this is where werepyres originate. They are either Vampires that have been bitten by a werewolf or werewolves that have been bitten by a Vampire. LINK

(Nothing about the mental status)

Now this is interesting (a bit off your topic)

Zombies

About the least numerous of the races these are undead that have gone wrong. They are easily killed and often used by vampires as servants when they can’t get human servants.LINK

Vampires and Human Servants

There are four stages involved in the process to making a human servant. A human servant will live as long as the vampire does. So the human servant not only provides lifelong companionship but can also be a great source of power for the vampire. Their bond allows them to share all powers, and their metaphysical power. If a vampire forces the marks to make a human servant, it can be very painful, kind of like rape. A person can be only one vampires human servant and their bond's so strong that in most cases if one is killed the other dies. For that same reason human servants are sacred, no vampire can harm another's servant.

The first mark This mark gives the human the ability to heal faster, they become tougher, harder to kill. They also can meet vampires in the eyes without being caught. For the vampire, it gives them the beginning of their psychic connection.

The second mark With this mark the vampire can gain nourishment through the servant. The vampire also has limited telepathic powers with the servant, mostly through dreams. For the servant there isn't much more gained.

The third mark This mark is given when the vampire takes blood from the servant. The vampire now has direct telepathic communication with the servant. The servant gains more strength, stamina, resistance to injury, immunity to disease and poison. They gain almost all powers without having to give up their humanity.

The fourth mark For this mark the human servant takes blood from the vampire. Part of the ceremony, "Blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh, two minds with but one body, two souls wedded as one." The servant and the vampire are now bonded for life.

This could be something that would cause a servant to go crazy is the vampire is not in control...

Breaking Humans

Using their abilities or lineage powers, a vampire can permanently break into a humans mind. A vampire needs to be alone with the human for several days, sometimes a week depending on their natural resistance to vampires. The vampire will begin by bespelling their mind and gathering information from their mind. They will then use a variety of psychological techniques such as captivity, fear, starvation, and physical or emotional torture to weaken the human. They will eventually break the human's mind and will power by using their abilities. The vampire will read the human's mind and repeat it back to them so they begin to feel their is no escape. Born vampires will use their lineage to aide them in their goal.

The end result is a broken human who's mind can be easily entered by a vampire. The vampire then begins the process of rebuilding the human's mind and life to include their servitude to the vampire. If they do not rebuild the human's mind any vampire will be able to enter the human's mind. The result is a human that knows that vampires exist and what the vampire is capable of doing to them. Not all broken humans appear to be broken. Some may appear to be confident, outgoing or fearless, when in reality even the humans that talk back to the vampires are scared of what a vampire can do to them.

Broken humans work for vampires in a variety of ways. Some have an impersonal relationship with the vampires and run errands, provide information, or provide them with humans to feed from. Other vampires choose to have a more personal relationship with broken humans

A vampire will keep the human/s they have personally broken as their own servants, and will rarely lend them out to other vampires. Broken humans can be identified by vampires by a tattoo that looks like an ordinary celtic knot design on their shoulder.

Okay, this is why the main forum is extremely challenging to get involved with. Because this started out talking about Reinfeld. He is a fictional character in a story. So I would think this thread would have stayed on that track... but it never does.

Bottom line, you would have to be quite submissive to be human servant to a vampire. Submissiveness is fun at times, but do any of know anyone who is a willing submissive permanent slave?

I don't know about fiction, but I know about me personally. I would never take on a human servant. I would be open to someone who helps me with different things, but only if it is their own will, never by force. I don't think they would go mad.

There seems to be a lot of confusion in this thread. A servant and a slave are not always the same thing. Many people have maids and maids are a type of servant. So just because someone is a servant doesn't mean they are a slave. If a living vampire has a servant it is not likely that they are a slave. The servant of a living vampire is not more likely than anyone else to go insane. If a fictional vampire has a servant that servant is what ever the author wants the servant to be. As to how likely the servant of a fictional vampire to go insane that is also up to the author.

being a servant or even a slave to someone even a vampire is at times the humans choice to become so. Being one or the other can be quite liberating. Being a slave usually they actually have more freedom than we do because they put all their trust into their Master or Mistress and they are more free to express themselves.

i do not feel servant would fit, like sying slaves of years past. i think humans as said in movies or myth do it for they wish to become immortal or for some other reason. a mutal offering on both parts. And maybe sometimes they do go a little crazy for the guilt or facts hit them and they cannot bare the pain of what is going on.

Since we don't life in a fantasy world, and humans do have a choice as to whether or not they serve anyone else, it would not be the servitude that would drive them crazy. I believe that if they were to encounter mental problems, they either received it from their gene pool or it happens as an accumulative result based on the stress/trama factors in their lives.

The Demian theory of Reinfield being a nutcase I'll stick with that.. I love the imaginings of the author, but good grief lets not get confused between what is real and what is fictional!

Isnt that the easiest way to keep hardcore researchers away? To blur the lines between fiction and reality. One author I've read, wrote of human servants in two manners... the first; a human bitten a number of times by a vampire, would be under the vampire's influence... whilst the second, a more lengthy process of metaphysical connections leading to a stronger bond and benefits for both

More research is needed into this vital area of vampire unlife. Humans as helpers, assistants, aide-de-camp, foils, donors and nutcases are as necessary to a good story as the blud is to, well, you know.

Insanity is probably not a result of contact, more a precursor. My personal theory is that vamps sniff out the pliable, the injured souls, the gullible, maybe even the nurturing among us.

* When a vampire wants a human servant, he/she must give their intended four vampire marks. Only a master vampire can have a human servant.
First Mark
The vampire shares his/her "life force" with the human. This makes the human immune to their vampire's glance, voice and mind tricks. However, they might still be susceptible to other vampires. Anita, being a necromancer, became immune to almost vampires with this mark. In addition, it becomes much harder to hurt the human servant.

Second Mark
Two points of flame from the vampire come and overtake the human. They merge into the human's eyes, causing them to glow briefly with color, and then they vanish. After this point, the dreams of the human can be invaded by the vampire. Also, the vampire can feed off the human from a distance, and can sustain their life energy by using the life energy of the human servant as opposed to drinking blood. The human will tend to eat much more than normal and the extra energy is siphoned off by the vampire and the vampire can taste the food that is being eaten.

Third Mark
The vampire drinks the blood of the human, not to death, but close enough. During this time, the initial bite might hurt, but then the scents take over. Depending upon the vampire, or depending upon whether there is another focus (ie a werewolf or some other third in a triumverate) a scent is detected. Sometimes flowers (Alejandro) and sometimes earthy, woodsy scents (Richard). This establishes a more firm link. Direct mind contact can now be opened between the vampire and his/her human servant.

Fourth Mark
The vampire opens a blood supply, usually in the chest, and the human servant drinks from it. Usually a phrase of power is chanted at the moment of the feeding.

"Blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh, two minds with but one body, two souls wedded as one."
(GP p. 225)

"Blood of my blood, flesh of my flesh, the two shall be as one. One flesh, one blood, one soul."
(CD p. 317)

The human servant is now very difficult to kill and will live as long as the vampire lives. Some human servants have been known to be several centuries old.

* The result is, the human lives as long as the vampire does and possesses his/her strength and stamina, without giving up the daylight. Wounds heal much more quickly and they can withstand greater levels of physical pain. They are linked to the vampire telepathically, but the vampire cannot 'roll their mind' anymore.

* A human does not necessarily need all four marks to become a human servant. For example, Anita Blake was considered Jean-Claude's human servant when she had no marks, and now, with only three of the four marks, she is still referred to as his human servant.

Anita's Marks
First Mark - (Jean Claude) GP-44
Second Mark - (Jean Claude) GP-70

First Mark - (Alejandro) CD-182/240
Second Mark - (Alejandro) CD-269
Third Mark - (Alejandro) CD-317
Fourth Mark - (Alejandro) CD-317
(At Alejandro's death, all the marks were cancelled)

First Mark - (Jean-Claude and Richard) KD-370
Second Mark - (Jean-Claude and Richard) KD-371
Third Mark - (Jean-Claude) KD-381

* A vampire can only have one human servant. If the human servant is killed, it is possible to kill the vampire at the same time from the action. However, the stronger the vampire, the less likely he/she will die with the death of their human servant. When a vampire is killed, a human servant will follow him/her to death as well, again, unless they are strong enough to withstand the psychic separation. For example, when Anita killed Alejandro, she should have died, as her heart had stopped. However, Edward performed CPR on her until the paramedics arrived, thus saving her life. When Oliver was killed, Karl Inger died along with him.

* When a vampire makes a human servant, it's not as 'freeing' as Jean-Claude made it out to be. Since Anita is a Necromancer, she has free will within the relationship
(LC-320). Other humans in such a relationship must obey their vampiric masters (eg: Nikki).

* If a vampire has an animal to call, he can bind a lycanthrope of that variety to himself/herself with marks and possibly create a triumverate if they have enough power.

a servant knows what is happening and lends his/her services in hopes of not becoming food.its all apart of the chain as it goes in books and movies.a slave would be forced into doing this,so what your looking for is stories of slaves going mad,not servants.

Human servents would almost have to go a little mad. Being under so much influence of one more powerful day in and day out would have a profound effect on the mind. Imagin it, being near so much power, but never being able to gain it for yourself....I think it would make me crazy!

I think it would depend on what kind of Human Servant you are. I think so human "me for instance" like to be servants. but then again, if you were a vamp and then mad into a servant by force instead of by heart, then that would drive you to kill i suppose.

From what I have heard, a human servant has never gone insane for they are usually well treated by their master/mistress if the vampire in charge is kind; or they are killed off after so long if their master/mistress is cruel and uncaring...

Apparently I am wrong according to this:

http://www.deardeath.com/ghouls.htm

Forms and functions
Ghouls are true cannibals but do not seem to prey on humanity only through necessity. Their appetite is nearly insatiable. In modern fiction, ghouls are often confused with other types of undead, usually the mindless varieties of vampires and zombies. Although modern fiction (post-1968) suggests that the latter beings share cannibalistic habits with ghouls, it is nonetheless generally believed that vampires and zombies prefer live prey and focus on blood or brains.

In regards to mental manipulation, which in turn would create a human servant, I doubt any substantial literature can be found. But from a scientific stand point, if the brain is forced to do something other then what it wants it creates a rift. That rift leads to mania, which of course in turn leads to madness. So as long as the mind is agreeable to the action, there shouldn't be a problem. But as soon as the brain argues, problems start.

Everything I have read here deals with fiction. No one in the vampyre community has slaves unless they are into BDSM which many are but many are not as well. It is one of the overlapping cultures like goth.

I have to agree with an earlier post. There is no definitive information on this topic other than what authors made up. It's all make believe from novels.

i've never met nor seen a real vampire keep human servants, that's just mean. of course, there are iraquis and such who keep women as servants, but they were born that way, they don't know there's something better out there, so i don't see how they would go insane.

The idea of a human servant is far too Hollywood. Do you think a vampire would actually keep a human? As a pet? I highly doubt that. My opinion is that vampires are no different then "humans", only that they need blood to sustain life.

I don't believe the servant is like a pet, its more of a companion to be able to do tasks for the Vampire when he/she is unable such as during daylight hours or running menial errands like a wife so-to-speak.

Like in books and movies... A servant would take care of his boss's (the vampire) home. Protect him during the day while asleep and at his most weakest time. Clean, do things around such as errands and what is told him to do. As in most fiction, the vampire gives the servant some blood for some control and connection. Perhaps the servant is fine as that or perhaps has been promised to be 'embraced' and made a vampire at a later date.

Except with Bram Stoker's Dracula, Renfield was taken against his will and all that did was make him insane.

Basically, a servant/slave is anything the writer wishes them to be.
