What was a Dragon's purpose on this planet? Were they just another species or were they protectors of someone/something?
From what i have been able to find..Dragons were here on earth to share their knowledge with humans.Dragons were very old and wise in time when man was still young. They have had alot of people sayin Dragons were mean and just wanted to ravish the lands and kill..I believe they was protectors of the earth at one time..Then man come alone and like everything that they are not sure of...they feared them..and that in return caused the Dragons to retaliate and kill.
http://www.redicecreations.com/specialreports/2006/02feb/dragons.html
This link tells alot about what they think of the origins and reasons why Dragons were here on earth.
the red dragon protects us here in wales. dagons are guardians and teachers.
souls as old and as strong as existence.
Dragons never retaliated...They did not care about mankinds delema's. They were by default, gaurdians of the oracles, and the mystic lands. They were teachers and advisors.
They were also friends to the knights of the councils of old, as well as fierce warriors.
The war between dragons and man was mans fault for doubting the dragons, and thus evoking the war by "slaying" a couple of the dragons. This betrayal led to the future disappearance of the dragons. They did not flee, they went into hiding. Mankinds fault, no one elses.
Dragons, just like every other species that was bad ass, were hunted by man until extiction. Stupid humans *slaps mankinds hand* Bad mankind
LIke everything else man kills what he doesn't understand. Fear of the unknown, rather than learn and amit to not understanding.
Not all of the Old ones are dead. Still lingering on, some lived past their time, and others yet suffered under mans shallow minded attempts to command the unseen and make the world in his narrow tiny image. Trying to be gods in their ant hills. Slaughtering the things that were around to aide and assist.
Its one of the many thing humanity has suffered the loss of for its own faults. The dodo, im not sure on...but many other things yes, definatly.
it was always my understanding that they were protectors at one time. what changed i dont know.
The dodo bird was rediscovered in the early 50's. so man was wrong again. Why not the dragon hiding to be "reiscoved' again .
the things they protected, didnt want to be protected. Thinking they were the big bad, denied the rightful dues. As humans are want to do, think they are more bad ass then they are, corrupted the hell out of the history, and warped it.
well thank you for that infernal. and your right. humans always think they are bigger, better and badder then they are or they have to be.
The dodo was rediscovered? o.O
And, why does everything have to have a purpose? Why can't it just "be"??
because no one can just simply believe, they have to have proof of everything. no one can just believe on faith anymore
no the dodo was gone since the early 1900s....
I dont think it had a purpose except to eventually be extinct.
What in this world, simply is for the sake of being, what cannot be applied to use? other then the really tacky Post Modern art...Which is still functioning in the capacity of art.
Well in that case I'll say, the purpose of the dragon is to remind us that no matter how high we fly, the dragon was there first. No matter how powerful we are, the dragon was more powerful. No matter how much magic we command, the dragon commands more.
In other words, view the dragon and be humbled.
I believe that dragons were turned into protectors because of their size and strength.
Just being is a bit dull, isn't it? I would like to know or at least believe that everything on this planet had/has some sort of purpose. Just "being" is really pointless.
Why is that, do you think? Why is simply existing for no other purpose but to exist, pointless?
Because for simply existing for yourself, and not this planet or anyone or anything else on here..is just simply pointless. I believe the world is a big cycle. Everyone has a purpose here..everyone has something to do before they die. I don't think anyone or anything is here just to be here..for no reason.
Personally thinking that everything has to exist for a purpose is arrogance. Let alone it being a purpose that you can understand.
But hey, that's just me. I'm perfectly happy to entertain the fact that some things exist just because.
I agree with Vampirika. Existing just to exist does seem pointless. There has to be a purpose behind it. I don't see any arrogance in that.
I think that it's either everything exists for themselves/itself or for someone/something..I doubt it can be both. If we'd go by your opinion though, then I think the world would never move or evolve at all. It would just stay still and exist for itself..with selfish people.
Dragons have had a very checkered image throughout history.
From being a protector, to destroyer of villages, to a being that was offered virgins in sacrifice. In all the places of history, the common theme seems to be that they were magical creatures. Perhaps that was the true function of the dragon, a holder of the idea of magic.
I guess Dragons were protectors of the weak and guardians of secrets, if they were a good dragon. If they were an evil Dragon, than I guess, they were in charge of great wars and destruction over the weak.
very cool stuff. I also thought they were guardians, or protectors
I had also heard that Dragons were the protectors of humankind and the keepers of wisdom.
From what I have read Dragons where protectors of man. But man was tainted so over time man ended up killing the dragon.
Who are we to try to explain the purpose of another creature? Its like asking a dog why humans are here.
Dragons are a myth, well at least of the fire breathing kind :) However, through-out generations they have been symbolic of strength.
Agreed. Mythical creatures. We are talking about fictional creatures, right?
a dragon's purpose is to protectors of the earth and mankind at all time
There are many different types of dragon's, one for example were chinese dragon's who in Chinese folklore have long been a symbol of power and war.
I think the movie reign of fire has a interesting view on dragons!
they simply could be waiting for their food supply [US] to replenish itself!
then burn and devour the world again.
the bible mention's somthing about the world ending in fire and something about a seven headed serpent!
but I don't know exactly!
Dragons are a MYTHOLOGICAL creature therefore it doesn't have to have a purpose since they aren't real........
Well since dragons are creatures of myth and don't exist...the only purpose they serve is to entertain, by being creatures of horror in fairy tales and things of that nature..
How would we ever really know? I think they were just creatures that had short lives
I am not sure why there where dragons. Some say dragons are laylines in the earth now and there sleeping
A creatures purpose is hard to define by another species. Could the dragons share information and knowledge? I doubt it due to the language barrier.
I believe they were just a species and maybe we made them into more or something made them into more.
I find this to be an odd question.
Whats your purpose on this planet?
Why is man kind here?
Why are there plants?
Why are wales in the sea?
I believe they were (are) protectors and also being very wise and the hold great knowledge. I believe that some still exsit, they are just smarter than humans and remain hindden.
i love dragons and am very fascinated with there mythology. and i do believe they once roamed this earth, but like the dinosaures went extinct
dragons wear never understood and of course what did mankind do they got rid of them because they did not understand them and mankind is the smartest race if they had the know how they have now they would of cage up dragons and did all kinds of testing on them so we would know but still i think this is going to be mankinds downfall being a knowitall
The dragons are the symbols of separation between the common and the sacred worls. The symbol of initiation. They guard the treasures inside of the palace of Man but also they guard the unknown philosophal stone who lies in the road like an ordinary stone but cannot be seen by the ordinary men.
So the dragon may be the ally for the one who knows and keeps the silence, but also could be his enemy before tha man begins to really know what the treasures look like.
As about the quarell between Krab and Dracontion, I must say thet drakontion is not the only one who sustain this idea of some things without any purposes.
Kant names them "das ding ein sich" I think, "the things who exist for themselves".Some other philosophers as Platon, Heidegger, Spinoza, Locke have interesting theories about that. The utilitarist philosophy is the only one who denies this concept of "substance".
Maybe you should read some philosoply, Krab my friend.I think you will like this theory that Drakontion is speaking of.
Who knows.Maybe dragons are just substances and do not manifest now.
I have read where they were protectors of the land and other creatures. They are often portrayed as fierce creatures who simply killed everything in their path. But that makes good reading doesn't it.
Since we may never know, I for one, look upon them as another misunderstood animal who because of their bad reputation is hated and feared.
Dragons were guardians and teachers ,until we thought we knew better than they did, so they left to become protectors of the realms and behind the mystical veils that seperate the realms and if you look can still find their wisdom and counsel there.
Depends on the country and era. A Chinese dragon meant something different than one from Medieval Europe - well the fantasy version of it.
To some, bringer and sharer of knowledge, to others, humans were food.
They served purposes in the timeline of humanity just as angels now do. They existed but not as many would show you... it was a scene of the spiritual globe of reality. They still exist here and there to serve their purpose, and are usually very powerful within their prime power area. I've come across two and they are simply magnificent. Hell of an attitude but very respectable.
From my own readings dragon's never cared for mankind unless you are someone of exceptional intelligence that has something to offer the dragons. Dragons hunt and spend their time expanding their knowledge humans are, insignificant to them and they rarely have any interest in us.
I believe that somewhere Dragons await the time when Mankind finally goes extinct. Then they will rule the skies once more. They are much more intelligent than we will ever be.
i believe for us to understand what a dragon is we would have to understand the minds of old. People of middle earth Anglo Saxons mapped with meticulous detail the places where the dragons slept & watched like ancient midfields, the dimensional beast are now land marks as they watch mankind from the vial between our world and the dead.
In England you will find drakes, Grendel and wyrms all monsters to England’s population.
Look up how much of England maps are linked with them in the name…. each one a possible portal with the dark fire breathing monsters that watch and can protect mankind if is really needed.
A side note in Plymouth we have Drakes island in the channel… we won the second world war from there it was protecting Devonport from planes subs n ships it even helped sink the Spanish invasion with sir Francis Drake hiding the small English navy and when he finished his game of bowling he went out n suck the Spanish armadas entire fleet.
So I guess Drakes have been protecting England for a very long time and Devon is a boundary mark for some of the biggest concentrations of dragons.
well can't say i know much on this but just to say something diffrent or another angle so what if: the Drangons where nothing more than symbols of power be it wisdom or might f.ex the royals have always used the dragon motive well not all but many since old times and in the western world well they weren't realy nice people lot of wars to gain more power to control and dominate that would give a good reason to call a dragon fearsome or evil but still wise after all kings and first class people where highly educated compared to a farmer and skilled in combat tactics ect, thats the wise part.. in the east its properbly much the same story maybe they where alot wiser and kinder (the rulers) or some of them I base this on the fact that much of the old wisdom from the east dosen't seem so hostile compared to western, so dragons where and still are symbology of the rulers powers* some are understanding, others are for war so the purpose of a dragon depends based on who the dragon belongs to and from witch point of view you look just a thought.....
The human mind is a wondrous thing and from it springs all such beings as dragons, demons, angels, protectors and destructors.
The first question is why we create such entities. The second question is why we so fervently hold to these beliefs.
The answers circle around ultimate questions of the why of our existence.
Mythological creatures spring from this wonder. They are not unimportant; they are symbols of deep needs and currents of feeling in humanity.
I believe Dragons were a greater form of earthly intelligence not unlike the whales and dolphins of today, just with a much higher mind set.
Too bad organized religion killed them off.
I would have to agree with most here. They were here to protect and teach and guard and as usual man came along and lived in great fear of what they didnt understand so they destroyed as many as they could find. There is still much we can learn from dragons thru study.
Lazarusad, you will find organized religion are just plagiarist in folk law.. feel sorry for them.
Beowulf would have more bearing on it… if only that wasn’t loged by organized religions hell bent on changing history to give there belief one hope of truth after plagiarizing and burning till only whispers were left.
Dragons are guardians they did form the earth, we did started a war and they now guard portals or dimensions… look for places in England with drake in them .. all doorways
I have one in my journal a pictures of Drakes island…. Maybe google it
Ah maximus pain are you related to maximusnobus lol
Honestly… no dragons… yet they are spoke of lots in all nationals not ever connected lol
I will agree the Hollywood image is far from the truth… do tell me what research you have done into the ancient minds that wrote of such beast… please share you years of research that condemns a world of old as .. well … do share.
the beliefs about dragons were mostly that they were the keepers of knowledge.
I think that Dragons were there to tests the limits of of the human race. You always hear stories of how heros fought dragons to save some one or solved their riddles to gain passage to something.
We have skeleton evidence of many creatures that have lived throughout the ages. Where is the proof of mythological dragons? As far as I know the Komodo dragon does not provide us with knowledge or wisdom other than behavioral and biological information.
As spiritual being who can be both a protector or a predator....
Dragons the keepers of knowledge that make sence in the idea i have posted longer up the page just look at the world who made education who where the wise ones? I think the source of learning comes from the universities around the globe and many is set up by the royals, like royal academy of science
or created by a noble man/woman so I think its possible that drangos where how you asocciated those of royal blood or descriped them in tail after all there where a time when we comunicated in pictures/symbology and not words then in other parts knowledge is ofcourse more natural things like how to take care of the earth ect. read the other post i made and think about it or maybe debunk it .....
to me dragons were protecters i sometimes think that some dragons were also reincarnated into human souls and still live today .
i believe that the dragon was the protector of the land. a wise soul that is older than the land itself. but people fear what they do not understand and when that happened and people began killing them off they turned mean, naturally to protect themsleves.
i also have to agree that those that were killed have been reincarnated and the wise souls still live on today.
though i also believe that somewhere dragons still exist in the form they were originally created in.
I belive dragons served a purpose to help protect and serve Wizards. kinda like a guard dog.
As far as I can tell, they are pretty much just another energy entity....a particularly strong one, at that. Likely exist on another dimension and sort of overlap onto ours sometimes, I think.
Somehow I believe that in some early ages, folks came upon dinosaur skelatal parts and were able to determine that they were a part of a larger, lizard like creature.
Also, there are many a nasty lizard in the world. In fact lizards are the most populous reptile in the world. So it is no wonder that a myth of a mystic creature based on the wonderful lizard has been formed.
Sure dragons can be likened to lizards and why not Hollywood stuck plastic on them and made films… I think the world is full of sheep and media programmed from film and Tv.
Dragons are not lizards they are not having bones for they are shamanic visitors from dimensions.
Crazy I know … lol
I guess with all the new age concepts and so forth which are based on old age past, we should call new age old age relived and twisted to please the masses. Now that’s crazy lol
Places where the Vail between life n death was strong was known and mapped all over England like minefields, ancient Celts Saxons and Vikings new to not enter the areas for fear of waking the dragon. It’s going to be hard for you to understand the minds of old for you have grown with a different paradigm than them, your spirituality different you understanding of the world less magical… blind and deaf to nature, killing nature to build monstrosities called buildings draining lakes and mash grounds wild life gone forever… so not in tune with nature, from the greatest nebular to the smallest atom everything is in tune and follows the code of nature and balance… except us …. So no silly explanations of lizards is what old Celts thought was a monster that’s your paradigm of life… become a shaman live in nature go to places called drake and meditate … then you will see the watchers… just out of human vision behind the Vail.
ok, here's a thought. I read a book once, where in a time of great slaughter, the Dragons, through dimensional travel slipped onto another world far from here. I do believe that some form of this theory could be true. Perhaps they still exist on another plain of existence or in another dimension. There is plenty that we do not know about other dimensions and plains of existence, that it cannot be completely ruled out. Humans may very well exist on other worlds. ok, i will not go off on a rant about this, but consider the possibility with a little open mindedness.
I dont know the purpose of dragons or if they are protectors or not. When and if I get the chance to meet one I will be sure to ask.
dragons were defenders of the eath and servants to the earth mother.
i would say it was both defenders and attackers among them
They at one point in time were here on earth. They are in hiding and waiting to be released in the world. There used to be a temple for them...but not for worship...it was for knowledge.
but it was unfortanetly destroyed and the location of where it was lost with time.
from all the movies and books and spoken stories, the dragons are kind or evil. eepers of knowledge and they could even make your wishes come true if you survived the meeting afcourse..
that is all i know about them. my association to them are dinosaurs. when they first found their bones they were mistaken for dragons.
Dragons were here to fulfill their purpose of sparking mankinds imagination, firing his desire to fly and warn him that something stronger than man lies out there and is intelligent too. Once their message was received they moved on from this brutal world to one more suited to them. My opinion only of course.
A dragon's purpose is anyone would make them to be.. wise, friend of man, one to use man as food, scourge of mankind, or a sage to the wise.
That is what is wonderful about myth and legend, they are anything you wish them to be.
i think they were protectors of knowledge and visdom!
and i agree also with most of the above
Yes a lot of what people are saying is true, but some is not.
from what i'v always been told Dragons where here to protect the earth from evil. There was even supposed to be a religous sect that worshipped them.
Dragons exist on the planet?
Dragons are works of fantasy.
With that, such a work of fantasy may only be said to have an existence where that existance may only be a function of the mythology behind it.
dragons was used for alot of different things some to protect some to destroy....
dragons where dinosaurs.if you look at a pic of a wivern and take away its wings its a carnosaur.the artistic tradition mixes up pterosaurs and carnosaus.there is also plesiosaus like the loch ness monster and other lake monsters round the world.
The many myths of dragons portrayed in all cultures shows us they were indeed oracles, protectors, evil tyrants, conquers, and saviors. I personally have not seen proof of dragons myself. Then man has destroyed many things in which it does not understand out of jealously and fear. Dragons that were oracles could have foreseen the future. With that knowledge they could have just left and removing all traces of themselves until the day in which man removes there destructive ways.
The dragons purpose could have also been something we could or would never think of.
According to Isidore de Leville, there are marine dragons (anguis), earth dragon (serpents), air dragons (draco) and draco marinus which master sea and air. Dragons are always related to the elemental spheres and moreover they tend to personify each of separate element.
DRAGONS OF AIR
The element of Air governs the eastern quarter of the circle. Its dragon ruler is Sairys (sair'-iss), who oversees the dragons of breezes and winds. Its colour is pure yellow; it is considered warm and moist. The positive associations of Air are: sunrise, spring, the breath, optimism, joy, intelligence, mental quickness, renewing. Negative associations are: frivolity, gossip, fickleness, inattention, bragging, forgetfulness.
Dragons of this element belong to a family of Draconic beings whose subspecies include those of wind, storm, and weather. At times they join forces with the dragons of fire and volcanoes, seas and other waters, mountains and forests, and chaos. Just as no one element works totally alone, whether in magickal endeavours or physicals activities, elemental dragons join their great powers to accomplish tasks. Sometimes there is conflict of elemental powers, producing great atmospheric and environmental disturbances, but mostly the elementals work in harmony.
DRAGONS OF EARTH
The element of Earth rules the northern quarter of the circle. Its ruler is Grael (grail), who oversees the dragons of mountains, land, minerals, gems, and moonbeams. Its colour is clear, dark green; it is cold and dry. Positive associations of Earth are: midnight, winter, respect, endurance, responsibility, stability, prosperity, thoroughness, purpose in life. Negative associations are: rigidity, unwillingness to change or see another side of a problem, stubbornness, lack of conscience, vacillation. Earth-element dragons are the most placid, unless they are required to stir up great disruptive energies such as earthquakes. The subspecies belonging to this element are the dragons of the mountains and forests and those of desert and arid regions. As might be easily guessed, the element of Earth often works closely with dragons of fire and volcanoes and those of chaos and destruction.
DRAGONS OF WIND, STORM, AND WEATHER
Dragons of wind and storm and weather are long, slender dragons, some of them with great gauzy wings, others with the Oriental "flying-lump" on their foreheads. Down the spine of the back flutter thin fringes of membrane tissue. The tend to be pale yellows and pale blues, but change to angry red-orange, purple, or black when they call up storms. Long, feathery antennae rise above their eye ridges.
They are excellent helpers to control excesses in the weather; getting things moving in your life, especially in the areas of creativity and the mental processes; protection; flexibility of the mind; openness to new ideas; sweeping away obstacles, most of ten in a dramatic fashion. Sometimes these dragons have feather-looking scales that surround their eyes and necks. Such a dragon was the British Henham dragon, which was well documented in 1669. It was described as being only about nine feet long with small wings and rather curious eyes surrounded by 'feathers'. The Henham dragon put in repeated appearances before a number of observers for several years before it disappeared.
DRAGONS OF FIRE
The element of Fire governs the southern quarter of the circle. Its dragon ruler is Fafnir, who oversees the dragons of Fire and the sunbeams. Its colour is pure red; it is considered warm and dry. The positive associations of Fire are: noon, summer, the sun, blood, enthusiasm, activity, change, passion, courage, daring, will power, leadership. Negative associations are: hate, jealousy, fear, anger, war, ego, conflicts, lightning. Subspecies of the Fire-element dragon family are those of fire and volcanoes. The subspecies of desert and arid-region dragons, and those of chaos and destruction, often work closely with draconic entities of this element. Dragons of Fire and VolcanoesFire dragons are all shades of reds, oranges, and deep yellows. They have thick, heavy bodies and long snakelike necks and tails. Some of them sleep in dormant volcanoes for long periods of time before they once again become activeThese dragons are also visible in forest fires and large structure blazes. They are very unpredictable, unreliable, and difficult to work with. If not properly handled, and then only within a cast and sealed circle, fire dragons will do as they please with a magician's spell. They will achieve the asked-for end result, but may "burn" their way through everything to get there. Dragons of Fire and volcanoes help with personal purification on all levels of being, energy, courage, stamina to pursue goals and finish projects, remove obstacles and barriers. Be very certain you want their help in the barrier-removal, for these dragons will go through and over anything and anyone to achieve the goal. The results can be swift and difficult to handle emotionally.
DRAGONS OF THE SEAS AND VARIOUS WATERS
Dragons who dwell in the seas, lakes, rivers, ponds, and other bodies or water, whether large or small, are basically shaped like Oriental Dragons. They are usually long and serpent-like, usually without legs or wings.
They are a variety of shades of blue, from silver-blue to dark blue-green. In fact, their shades cover all the hues of the water in which they reside. All of them have a silvery hue to their scales with some shade of blue predominant on the belly scales. They have feathery fringes about their mouths and down their backs. They have large horny eye sockets set in a rather flat snakelike head. These dragons can be very large or very small, depending on their dwelling place. Dragons of the seas and various waters help with emotions, either calming them or breaking through a barrier built around them; movement, both to get events moving and to keep things fluid; calmness on all levels of being and in all circumstances; creating changes, especially those brought about by breaking free of people who control us through our emotions.
Sightings of these creatures is so well documented that one can dismiss the sceptics' observations that people are only seeing dolphins, squids, or other common water creatures. Sea dragons have been seen all around the world, but especially off the coasts of Scandinavia, Denmark, the British Isles, and North America, as well as in various lochs, lakes, and rivers.
No other Draconic species have been so well documented as those of the various waters. Not only in stories and myths, but official records of several governments
DRAGONS OF THE MOUNTAINS AND FORESTS
Dragons of the mountains and forests generally have the look of the Western Dragon, with heavier body, four legs, huge wings, long neck, and tail. Mountain dragons are much heavier looking in the body than those of forests.
Dragons of the mountains and forests help to build long-lasting foundations in life; long-range goals; stability; physical and mental endurance; responsibility and sometimes the strength to stand up under existing responsibilities; enduring prosperity and success that come through personal effort and planning.
Forest dragons inhabit stretches of deep forests, groves, sometimes solitary clusters of trees. They like the changing pattern of sunlight through the branches and leaves. They tend to get upset and sometimes belligerent if their forests are damaged or destroyed without a good explanation.
Both mountain and forest dragons have been known to inhabit areas close to human towns and farms. Sometimes this created conflict, sometimes not, depending upon the behaviour of the humans. After the belligerent Christians gained power, dragons were hunted with great determination, until they withdrew from the physical plane.
Some of these dragons are of the variety that at one time lived in or around barrows or burial mounds, especially if there was treasure inside.
Mountain dragons usually are found in the high, rocky peaks or rugged outcroppings. Some of the older ones staked out their domains on the very top where the wind and snow caress their great bodies.
Dragons of both the mountains and forests are shades of greens, browns, and blues and often have upright rows of sharp scales down their necks and backs
Dragons Elements
I would have hoped that they are protectors of soemthing important...if they ever were real I'd believe they were here to protet or guide souls.
I think the first reply..or first post said it all.
Dragons were just another animal trying to live on this planet
with everyone else..purpose-unknowen.
why must they have a purpose other then
to live and survive?Man...back then,
did not know how to study a creature of the strange
and unusual.So...they just assumed by appearance
that they were evil..and destroyed them all.
The End.
