According to many myths, the survivors of a vampire attack had become a vampire themselves.

Why is this so?

I think it's because the vampire DNA is transfered during a bite, but I'm not an expert so I dont know for sure

You mean the DNA through the saliva? Are you suggesting vampires let their saliva run through their victim's puncture wounds?

That's what I believe, when someone bites something saliva is naturally transfered. I just assume that it is the same with vampires and if it is true then the DNA from the saliva can mix with the bitten's DNA

Well I of course think that's a myth, I believe that the exchange of blood is how to sire a vampire but that's besides the point,
I think they saw it as a disease. Like if a rabid animal bites you, you get rabies.

I agree it would be transfe of blood to change the human into a vampire...the bite part only being a myth. Maybe starting with the body dying after a bite because of an infection that spreads and it being more exciting for the movies or stories to assume the dead come back to live to serve their master.

In the Hollywood version of the "Vampire" bite...you forget...most Vampires either slit their wrists or cut themselves and make the victim drink their blood...in few cases "Vampires" have an enzime in their saliva like the vampire bat or leech that keeps the blood from clotting...so the wound stays open and the vampire can drink it.

When a vampire bites, it either wants to kill you or turn you. There isn't really such thing as survivors. And if a vampire bites you to turn you it takes you as its mate. You are then bonded together until one of you dies. Now if a vampire kills a person, then they drain them completely, or they will be turned. Vampires only feed on criminals however. And only turns those who it wants to be its mate. You can't take this or leave it. Believe what you want, but I tell you that this is the honest truth.

I know in movies, usually, someone who gets bitten becomes a vampire.
But, I believe it is the transfer of blood between the vampire and the victim that causes the turn. The vampire bites, then he/she wounds themselves and has the victim drink. Therefore blood and DNA transfer = change to vampire.
Venom in vampire fangs and DNA??? never heard of that, but, I guess it could be possible.

I think a lot of the myth with this is that the bitten doesn't become a vampire till they are bitten then drink the blood of the vampire who bit them. It is thought that it is like getting a vampire virus and that is why the bitten turn.

Thought interrupted by unplanned click.

Since vampire disbursement had been hindered by various ice ages, plague (vampire feeding grounds contaminated; limited local resources), Viking hordes, and ravening Crusaders and Infidels, the shared blood developed both strengths and weaknesses.

Good point, MaraJade, or we can just run with what might have been asked. I'm thinking Buffyvamps who inevitably crawl out of their graves on a predictable schedule. The saliva thing then would make sense. But I'm thinking more like bleeding gums or acid reflux on the part of the vamp. Not too romantic, though, but then neither is the flu.

By the mith, a virus wich is contained in vampires saliva will successfuly infect and turn the bitten victim in to a vampire, if enough blood has been drawn from victims body, in order to cause the collapse of the immunouss sistem, wich is in charge for defending the body from viruses. If the immunouss sistem has been weakend, the person gets infected easily, if not the immunouss sistem easily eliminates the virus out of the body sistem.

As we have heard , you don't become a vampire unless the vampire stops before the point of death thus saving a slight portion of your life and then infuses said victim with their own blood. Whats in their blood that makes it so special? Since the vampire is constantly taking in humans blood there has to be a change once it is consumed. What that is no one has said as yet....

BloodMother, viking hordes? Heh. Very nice.

Anyways, vampire bats' saliva contains a painkiller. So does ours, just not very strong. That's a good link.

So, if the bite doesn't hurt that much, the victim moves around less. And since the saliva needs contact with the would to work, that's where any potential disease can be transmitted, for example "vampirism".

Nothing better than thinking about vampire blood with my morning coffee. Whoops, not in my coffee. I like it black.

Viral explanations are handy and feed off Hiv, Superflu, and Bird Pox fears, but that means a vaccination could eventually be devised. Still, a good one.

What about a mix of dna, viral and magic, and the victim's desires? What if their were recessive vampire traits, mostly bred out of the human race. Perhaps a vampire is attracted (pheromones) to certain victims, and only those with the recessive genes will respond to the virus, and/or the magic. I like to thing of human fertilization with this theory. The female ovum sends out chemical trails and millions of sperm follow the path and surround the egg, trying to break in. Only one makes it. Is it because that sperm is superior, lucky or is there something more the egg is doing to allow entrance (that we don't know yet).

It depends on which book you read or which movie you're watching. In some biting is simply a way to feed, in others it's vampire procreation.

Vampirism is originated from a disease that would make you allergic to sunlight so your skin would be pale your gums would retract making the appearance of fangs and the whole blood thing was that from the disease you had a iron deficiency and back then the only cure for this was for you to drink the only thing they had witch was blood and so the bite thing came from there need of blood and long teeth and stories .thank you hollywood and a few old books ;)

From the stories I have read and all I have come to believe its more of sharing corruption. Vampires in most stories are damned things and the bite.. and in most stories it takes more than one.. will allow the damnedness... corruption to enter and take over the new body turning it into what started the process.

According to fiction, a person does not become a vampire until drained to point of death and then given the vampire's blood to drink. The passing of the virus, or disease then turns the person into the undead or vampire. Different authors and legend can change this, of course. Bram Stoker had the person (Lucy) turn very slowly into a vampire the more Dracula drained her...

Depending on the novelist or web page you get your information from, it can be any combination of what has already been mentioned. Virus, DNA, venom...It basically depends on the author of whatever you read's personal preference for how someone becomes a vampire. Then again, you have people who believe that you cannont in fact "become" a vampire, you're either born one or not, it isn't a passable trait.

I think the reason most stories of vampire attacks result in the bitten becominga vampire is because it adds to the romanticized feel of said story. Hollywood has brainwashed everyone into believing vampires are some sort of sensual creatures.

the vampire bite transfers a virus... that in turn eats away at the victim until they die or the virus takes over... some so called myths state that no one has been able to survive both a bite from vampire and a werewolf... that is because both bites contain a different virus... the viruses battle... and kill each other... and therefore kill the victim

I would think the virus has to be spread though the blood, not so much the bite. Biting changing, I think it is just a myth.

the 'venom' that is excreted out of the fangs is to easy the pain and to create a euphoria for the victim/donor and thats wher the sexual experience comes from. However form the one bite isn't how you become a vampire from the differant books I have read you have to be drained to almost death and than you have to drink the blood blood of the vampire. Another method I read was you have to exchange blood 3 times befor ethe change can occur.

I think this is just one view of the myth. In one of my readings, it was said that the victim has to suffer a particular number of successive bites before he eventually becomes infected and becomes a vampire.

Because Vampirism is considered a disease in some movies, the bite or attack there of is the transfer of the disease right into the bloodstream.

i think is just a myth but if i wasnt i would assume its a aspect the pirces your skin that the infection impowers your blood that its not use to that the flow of your blood changes with no question that makes them who they are once bitten...

that consumes them in there own way because the infection was taken place in the first place of that 1 simple bite...

sorry had to take a stab into the question!

you would have to think that a vampire bite transfers some sort of virus through the bite, hence infecting the other person.

I do don't believe theres anything in the actuall bite, I agree with some others on here that the vampire has to basically exchange blood with you. Afterwards the vampiric cels take over and destroy all human cels, while multiplying to take over...why vampries heal so quickly.

Everybody knows the explanation of "siring"...Where a vampire takes blood, and then gives blood to the victim, which makes them a vampire.

I think maybe it had to do with the saliva, I mean if you're gonna stick your teeth into somebody's neck and suck the blood out maybe there might be a transfer of DNA?

I think a little more than a bite is needed to turn someone to a vamp in most stories, even though there are a few were just a bite is enough.

Usually, I here more about the cross-transferrence of blood. The vamp drains someone, then has them refill on the vamp blood, stir, and you have a new vamp!

The viral one-bite and your sick approach is pretty solid if you are discussing the development of a lycanthrope. All it takes is one little nibble and one tiny drop of slobber, and then you have the wolf man running about...

About the DNA thing that was brought up at the beginning. If you were to puncture someone in the neck on one of the main arteries I would think that the pressure from the blood gushing would wash out all the saliva. Blood has been known to spray incredible distances when you get a puncture there. I just mentioned the neck because it seems to be a popular spot in the lore. Its just an idea though.
