For those of you who believe in ghosts and the afterlife,I have a question.
Do you feel that a fallen soldier would experience the same thing as a "normal" ghost would? Or do you feel they might go to someplace special in reprieve? Or,do you feel they might be bound to the place where they had fallen?
I feel that when soldiers have aspecial place that they go to that is much better then anyones elses, like the young and babies.
I feel that fallen soldiers due to the extreme violence of many of their deaths are bound psychically in part to the place of death. There are a large amount of hauntings of former battle fields.
Yes,that is what Ive noticed also PW..thus the question...
I am involved with American Revolutionary War and U.S Civil War reenactment.
There are many reoprts of ghostly hauntings of many of the battlefields from those wars. Particularly where the wosrt carnage and attrocities occuered. From the Revolution the area where Baylor's Dragoons were massacred is reportedly haunted. Many Civil War battlefields are also haunted, particulary Gettysburg, Friedricksburg, Antietem and the area of the Peninsula between Williamsburgh and Yorktown, VA.
I feel that the violent death ties the fallen soldier to the place of their demise.
I think they'd be treated the same as any other spirit. Have the same choices for their afterlife.
Well this is a topic that falls close to me they are a special spirit they are soldiers for the souls now keeping things normal or there all in heaven either one there happy
Many people believe that ghosts and spirits still bound to this world are trapped due to a violent death. Soldiers killed in the line of duty would apply to this theory of tormented souls. It is not suprising that many battlegrounds are said to be haunted by fallen soldiers.
I guess a spirit of a fallen soldier would stay and haunt a specific location, if he had fallen on a duty, having no time to fullfill the very special important order/duty, or failed to influence a key moment, in a moment of haste, wich is now resulting in this very special attachment to the place, wich is now unfullfilled, and needs to be resolved in a way, so the spirit can be relased further.
i think that soldiers may be bound where they die depending on the circumstance of thier death. Otherwise they go with all their loved ones
I believe that they will go into the light. Those who chose not to won't. Maybe one chooses not to go into the light to be around those to help keep their safety.
I believe they will go to the afterlife they earned.. and yes their service would be alot of good karma.
Yes I do believe that the chance of them haunting the area they die would be as likely as anyone to die such a death. But there is also the fact that they are trained to fight and are aware that they will be going to battle with a risk of death. So in a way they are sort of expecting it... or sort of prepared.
Anyone ever been to a civil war battlefield or some other battlefield. They are the most erie feeling places out there. You don't even have to be a medium to feel the presence of death there. I believe that during these epic battles the fallen are traped there for eternity. I think that this is due to the amount of death that happen at one time or the evilness of war. Something along those lines.
I doubt it. But i think they can have harder to realise they have died and therefore it can be different.
I don't think it's possible to speculate on what percentage of people who die, be it violent or not that remain ' earth bound '
The usual belief re battlefields are that strong emotion create a replay action of a kind.
As to a soldiers destination after death....that would depend on his beliefs etc
I believe we judge ourselves in the end, and upon that judgement is determined future lives or opportunities via reincarnation.
Realisticly I believe that soliders are somehow bound to the place were they were killed, there are so many hauntings on old battle grounds...
But I'd hope they'd go to a better place
many think that the more violent the death the stronger the ties are to that place and the spirit can not move on, i dont know if i believe all that but i do think that the spirit may be tied there if they feel they have unfinished business there.
I cannot speculate as to what happens soldiers when they are killed on the battlefield. I can tell you that a battlefield is the scariest thing that a person will ever experiance next to the loss of a child.
It does subside after a short time and you go into get the job done, come home mode.
If there is a God, or whatever diety that one would prey to, I would hope that all of my brothers would finally get to come home and watch over thier family.
Wow, this thread made me emotional, damn.
I want to thank you for willingness posting here.I know it is an emotional subject for many.Myself included.
While I dont know the answer,I know what I would like to think happens..
Thank you Master Wolf. I never left a man behind, It can get people killed, but we owe it to our soldiers families. They must have closure.
I think it is a numbers game. Think from a purely mathmatical angle. Large number of deaths=larger possibility of ghosties.
Violence has a small part to play, but I think that the sheer numbers are what account for it.
As always, its just my take.
I think it has to do with the things that were going on (not just the war) at the time of the individual's death. If they had some unfinished business that they needed to do before they died because not doing so would leave them devastated...I think that they would be stuck where they were unless they figured out a way to pass on completely and then manipulate the will of the living to complete their deeds.
I thank you for thinking about us. We are taught in the Army that God loves soldiers, which contradicts the "Thow shall not kill". I guess at one point in time it was Thou shall not murder, and their answer was that we are killing bad people, not murdering.
Most do not realize the price of Freedom.
Yes..and it is that saying that had in part brought me to open this thread..
The price of freedom is extremely high.. do our fallen keep paying it after they are gone?We can only hope not.
Im just glad you kept your head down and made it home safe.
I do believe that depending on the way of death would the solidier remain bound to the place that they have fallen also if the spirit did not realize their desth would they go on.
Once a choice is made to kill an enemy, It takes just over 1 second to aim and kill. Some will not ever realize what happened to them.
I find it hard to believe that over time we must be talking of millions of earth bound Spirits.
Unfinished business seems unimportant when one passes for the most part.
Evility > I don't have any way of proving to you what I feel to be true, but I'm going to say it anyway.
I feel the number of earthbound Spirits are actually miniscule, compared to the numbers which pass daily, soldiers or no.
Your comrades are taken to a place of respite......no pain, no suffering, no hell....healing and understanding is given free of charge.
Sinora,
I truly wish to belive what you have stated. I have never left a man behind and It would crush me if I found out that they were still wandering that Godforsaken Place.
I think it would honestly depend on the soul. I mean it had a tragic death im sure but i believe souls just like humans take things there own way.
KCRC...Christian beliefs are that Soul survives death, and therefore if it does.. it is it not logical to assume that no would no bond to the groun where the body fell? Uum, well perhaps if you believed in ghosts...
Well if theres any justice they have a special place to go were they know happiness.
I beleive we all go to one place or the other its either heaven or hell. you may be a fallen soldier and may have done great things but its still how you lived your life.
I believe fallen soldiers have the same fate as the rest of us. Of course there is a chance of them being stuck here due to a violent death.
As for their afterlife- I don't believe serving your country counts as murder (although it may). I believe there are a great many things that determine how your afterlife will be, this is an interesting thread for debate.
There's an old two line of verse that came about from the first world war.
"And when he reaches those heavenly gates St. Peter he will tell.
Another soldier reporting sir, I've served my time in Hell."
That's what I hope, that all men who for in the line of duty, whether it be my regiment, or any other in the world, that they can find a place where the madness ends.
i believe that when warriors have fallen that they go into a special place.many would call it either a section of heaven or hell.to me in my oppinion its all about the soldier finally finding a state of peace.
Ancient arab manuscripts relate about the violent death of beings(not only human) who makes a magic breach in the divine order of the universe.
This is why some secret cults in the ancient times were performin animal sacrifices at the beginning of the magical ceremonies.
This point of viewwas later sustained also by Giordano Bruno.
The violent death of soldiers may have the same effect and maybe that is why the apparitions are easier to be observed around the places of the battles.
An interesting picture movie vaguely related by this subject is "The Others" with Nicole Kidman.
Evility... I would like to take the time to thank you for posting on this...as a fellow soldier the hardest thing is to talk about what we have seen or done...I myself still have not wanted to talk about it...
as far as this post...I would like to think that our soldiers will have a final peace after all that they had to do...and in doing so gave their lives for it...I will never say if it was right or wrong, that is not my place but after being there...I would like to say that I would never want anyone to have to go through that...however it also might go along the lines why there are so many that have hauntings or ghost in a certain area that died while in battle....for it might be that they did not finish what they set out to do or do not realize that it is over for them...still this thread does strike home to all the ones that I served with that did not make it back...or worse yet did...
If you think about the mind set of a soldier then that gives you the barest measure of the soldier themselves, I.E. they make an oath to fulfill a duty that protects, they carry out their duties regardless of outside influence to get the job done, they sacrifice so much on so many levels, they conduct themselves with honour and an IDEALOGY they will not be called to war, but should that call come they will pick up their weapon and fight for what they beleive in.
So , the after life??
I'd say it bloody owes them an eternity of rest and happiness.
Of course there is the instance of dishonourable soldiers but that is another matter.......................................
I think they go to a place where they're rewarded for their duties in trying to fight for their beliefs.
I would hope that soldiers would have a place of honor in the afterlife. I don't think it would be completly separate though, they probably get to meet up with freinds, family, and their fellow soldiers. I agree that they would have respite from any battles/bloodshed.
i believe when a soldier falls they go where there heart is, be it on the battle field or back home to the ones they love.
a fallen soldiers spirit is no different than anyone else's spirit and they go to the same places as anyone else's.
i feel that they can be bound to were they fell or there home around family
being a soldier myself...that's a lovely thought.
Soldiers are no different than anyone else. They have a job to do, just like everyone else.
Since being back from Iraq, I have had countless people shake my hand and thank me for what I have done. Some have even covertly bought my meal at restaurants.
While thanks is a wonderful thing, I am not a hero. Just a guy who did his job that he signed a contract to do...knowing that one day he would get shot at.
If I had died there, I'm sure my spirit would be mingling amongst the rest of the spirits in the afterlife...regardless of race, gender or military service or not.
Vey nice theory though.
well while i was on sentry duty one night in afgahnistan i saw the ghostof an afgahni soldier.. he just smiled, waved at me and placed his hand over his heart. then vanished. so i know that there are earth bound spirits of soldiers
i guess it would depend on how they died
specterdrake > Seeing this soldier does not mean he was earthbound.
The fact that he was smiling indicates he had purpose......he was not mindlessly reinacting the past.
Some may be bound to a specific place if there is a reason for them to be there.
As a soldier I hope that should I fall in battle that I will go to the place that my faith has helped me understand I could go.
I know this is off the topic of the forum but I wanted to say it...To all those that are still in I ask one thing...do what you have to do to get yourselves and fellow soldiers home safe...
For those that served I know just saying thank you has an odd meaning if it where to come from someone else that was not there and could never understand what you went through but I was...a long time ago...something that should have been finished when I was still in...being pulled out after 3 days of the ground war and being back in the states in less that 72 hours made my head spin...it left me feeling that we never finished our job...for that I apologize that my era did not finish the job then.....
Khornesone I completely understand what you mean by hoping to fall in battle...I did too...I will always feel robbed of that....
Honest? you really would have rather fallen in battle? But think,if at least some of you had not gotten home who would help carry on the memory of those who did?
I believe soldiers, like other people, sometimes stay around and sometimes go to heaven, hell, or whatever they believe in. Not everyone who passes goes to the same places.
I think it's just like anyone else. they may be bound if they have something left they want to do, if not, they will move on.
i think they are bound to the place where they died. as what other members said. there are a lot of hauntings in battlefields.
As a soldier serving currently in Iraq.. I dont really know. I have no real idea.. I have felt the bush of a soul here and other places. Ft McClellan (forgive spelling) in Alabama gave me some interesting thoughts. Remember old battle sites are a graveyard. Try if you can to walk through Montana in the place of the "Little Big Horn Battle". Or see the grave of Geronimo in Oklahoma. Or Dresden in Germany, hell anywhere in Germany (always feels a little dark there). I am not worried about death because first its a waste of time and the other is I have better things to do. Be your own judge. Hope these thoughts help.. lol.
eh..honestly i dont think it would matter where you die.
if you end up as a ghost you end up where you have....haha "unfinished business"
for a fallen soldier, if their business is at 'home' they would be there, i think. and if it was where they died, they would stay.
Hmm,I was thinking about that yesterday..the unfinished biz thing. But I have the tendancy to believe differently at this point..while a soldier might have family or things at home,he knows before going into battle that if he falls ,his job is finshed. Therefore,if he goes into balttle knowing this and believing it,then if it happens it releases him somehow from that burden..just wistful thinking,I know, but even so...
In my faith, those who fall in battle go to Valhalla to feast with the warriors.
I guess because so many I love are in the armed forces I would like to think there is a special place for them if we go to heaven, if we are reincarnated I would like to believe that they get priority in that process and would get a wonderful after life where they receive all that the dreamed of having in the current life.
I agree with you.And if not heaven,at least someplace peacfull.
hmm a special place.
Well if you look at Norse beliefs, those who fell a glorious battle would goto Valhalla for the great feast, and reincarnation beliefs would be if they did things right they would be reborn.so its tough to say there are numerous beliefs out there that predicts where a hero would go,whether they are our hero or some other places hero doesnt matter. However its really hard to say since none of us has experienced death before and lived to tell what happens to us.Only some accounts record about the white light at the end of a tunnel effect however. That is just from word of mouth, one person says it it gets recorded someone else reads it and says the same thing until it becomes truth.
I personally always believed that there is nothing after death. Its a quietness sorta like when your in a sound proof room. You hear nothing see nothing.and are only trapped in your mind.
RazaelRiezen I agree with your first part but the second part is a bit scary as that sounds like hell to me not peace.
just one of the suggested outcomes of death I have read into. There are numerous people who believe nothing happens.
I know many who believe it too RR. It is one of those thoughts that make me feel afraid..I am not afraid of death, but I do get that way if I think of that.
Mind over matter... Dont be scared just live life to its fullest ether as a solider, a hero, a mother or a father, Lover. We will all end up where we should in the end. Just all ways know what comes around goes around.
From the MANY tv shows I have seen (and I have seen quite a few of them) many fallen soldiers are tied to the place of their death. I beleive this is because they don't "know" they are dead. So they continue acting out what they did in life over and over.
Maybe for some but not all for even most. think about the ground you sit on, the ground most of us sit on around the world soldiers of every type race and creed have died for as far back as man kind goes.
I personally feel if there is something after death, then it is our energies returning to the soil to replenish the earths energy.only to be reborn when the time is right.not any different then we were before just set in a different time line new name and new identity
The idea of afterlife is very difficult for me to muse on but I'd assume that owing to the violence and strong emotions associated with war and dying in war, it would seem far more likely for a person's spirit to be bound or haunt a particular area like a battlefield or a army hospital. So much pain, fear and anger in one place has to have some kind of effect.
Felix....if you can muse that far, then how about those ready and waiting to help those confused ones pass over ?
Well ok...if I'm going in the water i may as well jump in lol
I would wonder if the trauma of death in battle wouldn't make it difficult for others to reach out to them. I'm sure that many would pass on quite normally but if there ever was cause for a haunting, places like Hiroshima seem more suitable than most. Destruction and loss of life on the scale of a place like that or worse yet Dresden, would seem to scar a location and scar an afterlife as well. This is all just conjecture but otherwise we're just left to "toss a coin" and choose an answer (as we could with most subjects here) and I'm rather loathe to do that :)
Yes Felix I know what you mean.
I tend to think that there really are only a very small minority who remain.
In times of such great need, helpers would be ready......but that's just what I feel to be true.
Some things we really do need to say...I dont know for certain etc
Alot of thought has gone into yours posts in this thread, thank you for that everyone.
Well, I don't believe in ghosts, but I do believe in familiar spirits that would exist on old battlefields.
As far as the soldiers, they deserve to be at peace, not the agonizing place they died.
Rev. Ravyn
In response to an earlier comment that battle fields have an eerie feeling about them. Do you think this is down to the fact that the area is haunted or is it just our minds telling us that because we know what happened there. Has anyone had that feeling not knowing that it was a battlefield but later finding out?
I most certainly do not believe in Heaven or Hell, but am not entirely sure on what my thoughts of the afterlife might be.
Adding to my first post, I also believe that people who die on the battle field go wherever they wish to go in the after life.
i believe they go to a special wing of the so called heavens or the so called hell.
I recently had the opportunity to visit a civil war battlefield and could definitely sense that there was still a presence there, as to whether they chose to stay at the site of death or if the are bound there, I don't know, but I believe they are there.. there are a few pics in my portfolio if interested
I don't necessarily believe in an afterlife but do think that a fallen soldier might tend to haunt a place due to unfinished business and their untimely death.
Oceanne~ I do thank you for this post and in regards to your question earlier...Yes I do wish that...and as far as who would carry our names or such...it is everyone here like yourself that are posting about it...You are the ones that carry on what has happened..my name or myself would not be important to remember...just the actions that took place...to remember how we came to that and remember what happened so we would never have to repeat it again...I do wish that our first time around we finished things ...it would not be still going on and others had to go through it...
I hope they would not have to be reminded of what happened to them, I would hope they would be in a better place.
But like said in a earlier post, you can fill there souls trapped on that battle field.
Wow Dedlocke,I am very humbled.. I cannot even say,but know that all you guys are very close to my heart as I am sure many feel the same...and please, never forget that there are those of us out here that not only remember, but think about it often too..what you go thru. Thus my post. This post or thread doesnt come close to the thanks you all deserve for what you guys do ,it is the least we can do,never to let it go hush hush.
I think in war and especially ones where there are very high feelings involved that perhaps it causes some sort of ripple in time. I would hope that those who pass are not so attached they would have to relive the moment of their death over and over again. That would surely be a sense of being in hell but I am not so sure that the moment isn't sort of photographed and suspended in time and certain people are sensitive to it. In all honesty I don't know, as no one really understands the nature of time and space, energy and death. We only have theories. I also have read and seen documentary reinactments about people experiencing those from battles espeically the civil war.
I think a majority of them get caught in a time rip like someone said where they reinact the battle and moment of death over and over again.
There are many stories of haunted battlefields not only in America but in a majority of Europe even in japan where the nukes were dropped.
I think the violence of the death and how sudden it can be keeps many soldiers spirits earth bound. Many know they died and are able to move on but others didn't know what hit them and remain to this day.
I think it would depend some on the soldier as well. Not all murder victums turn to ghosts.
Oceanne i dont no much about ghosts but i would think so..
the mind simply does not go away after the death.it merely stays intact and for those who fought to gain power and were unjust get the painful memmories and haunting visions.those who made amends to the fact that they killed to do something worth while and to protect something got the repreive from those visions and memmories.
I believe that soldiers have a special place they go to after death but I also believe that is not just soldiers that have their own special place to go when they die.
In battlefields, there are possibilities that a ghost or two may remain in that field if they suffered a violent death or have not recognised they have died. In death, time doesnt exist. Thousands of years can go by and that ghost can be stuck to a particular area. Sometimes maybe there may not even be ghosts around but the imprint of ghosts that have crossed over can still exist in that given area
i believe when someone dies a horrific death they will stay around to haunt
Each "ghost" is completely diffrent than another. As for soldiers, I think that it really has more to do with whop a person was rather than their rank in life. Sure if a soldiers was obsessed with his job during his life then it stand s to reason that they might "haunt" a place related to it.
Surely there has to be a special place for those who die with honor. At least I would like to think so.
When we die we die come back or not we are a soul a power in its own right love the darkness you will be there soon!~
I don't see why there would be much difference if it was a fallen soldier or a normail person. That would open it up to is there a special place murder victims go or what have you. I believe it's all the same.
In norse mythology a fallen soldier or warrior would go to Valhalla to be honored for his bravery and death in battle. For others it is a place in heaven and some say a place in hell because the bible says that killing is a sin. It is all a matter of your belief system I like to think we come back to have a better life or learn a new lesson
