I agree with the post above.
Until I meet an actual Vampire and see them regenerate, then I'm going to say it's a very good myth taken by Hollywood and put onto the big screen for our viewing pleasure and imagination

Ok, technically, from medical terms, our bodies are constantly regenerating cells. It's how our bodies heal themselves, wounds and whatnot. Every person heals at different rates, some faster than others.

Now, if you're talking about accelerated regeneration, like how hollywood has portrayed the modern vampire can do, well, don't buy into all the Hollywood hoopla.

It is true that some people heal faster than others. With Vampires in the context of today, their bodies heal even faster. I guess that must have to with the amount of platlets in the blood.

Only my guess and theory though

Well in books it would depend on the writer but there a whole lot of people seriously following experimental medicine seeking immortality and they just consider themselves everyday people. They are not affecting anything beyond the normal state of a human. You can find many sites on this topic and really the researchers are not far from being able to extend life considerablly. Thing is, would this mean only the rich could afford this and what happens when people either don't die or live very long lives as far as the population of the earth?

We would definitely have to expand into space or limit births like the Chinese. The thing is I read about extension but not about the quality of life such as reducing aging itself...youthful appearance, stranglehold on arthritis etc....the quality of life in an extended or lifetime where people only die of accidents.

there are many things seeming like miraculous healing in the natural world, most are simply mind over matter of pain control techniques...
tribal me pierce themselves with large spikes with little of no apparent bleeding,, and one religious man in india once every year walks through town with a sword THROUGH HIS HEAD...
this has been documented.....but there are tricks to doing all of it, slow piercing with high pressure around the area stops open bleeding, but hurts worse in the long run, the sword thing I think they concluded that the guy had a major injury causing a channel to form in his brain tissues, so running the sword through there once a year only cuts the covering flesh...he got lucky in the initial incident...it does happen
but there are compounds which speed the healing process in people, extremely high blood oxygenation tends to speed healing in minor cuts as it accelerates blood clotting, making the body begin the healing process faster

I agree with the theory that we are regenerate at some small level but as far as body parts, i'd say that's just movie magic. After all cutting a human is alot different then cutting off a human foot, after all.

Agreed with Atonement. They regenerate to some degree but they arent like a lizard or a gecko as if their leg gets sawed off that it will just grow back. In Bram Stokers Dracula, Lucy was decapited so that she wouldnt be able to regenerate. Once that limb is gone its gone. In my OPINION I think vampires heal faster than humans do. If we get a scrape or a cut our bodies heal. Same with Vamps. They just heal at much faster rate than humans. After all they do have some human dna in their system

The human species as well as other animals do regenerate, but not to the level that Hollywood's vampire can.

The vampire can heal quickly. I have learned that if one eats a specific diet, one can heal quicker than say someone who eats a poorer diet, yet the speed of the healing is nowhere close to that portrayed by feature films.

I presume vampires can use the elements in blood to heal themselves. Of course, when you consider this, it would seem logical that evolution would eventually favour a vampire which could survive in daylight and even eat normal foods, like garlic, etc.

GirlOfTheValley- She was decapitated because immortals die if this is done. Common immortal rule.

As for the topic on a whole, regeneration for a different species can be quite different. Only a couple of animals can accomplish it, so why not vampires of legend. No one has the proff that hey can and they don't have the proof that they can't. Who knows.

Come on, besides someone who can heal fast due to high white blood cell count, no human can regenerate the way Hollywood portrays it.

i am glad that so many of you have decided to post here.i believe it is good for everyone to be able to give me their oppinions and beliefs about this subject.now there was also another movie that had something to do with regeneration.in ang lees the hulk it showed a scientist using animal dna with gene therapy techniques to try to combine it with his genes.now do you believe that this could be possible or just hollywood again?

I don't have sanguine tendencies but will share energy with willing participants. From my own experience I have noted the ability to heal my wounds faster by concentrating healing energy to the area that needs healing. A wound that would take some time to heal will heal in half the time or in just days.

I believe in the regeneration theory, as all living things regenerate. Some much quicker than others.

But, the quickness of the hollywood regeneration factor, that would put any living thing through an immense amount of pain.

I guess with this analysis, you need to heighten the pain attribute to regenerate quicker.

Remember, everything comes with a price.

Then again, if they are undead how would anything grow - the cells are dead?

I agree with the fiction votes from above; I disagree with the science explanations... The platelets work only inside the blood vessels... for the better of the body... When you get cut and the bleeding stops is because the platelets block the harmed vessel and allow the oxygen and nutrients to be held inside the body while other cells, specialized in repairs of damaged tissues take care of the wound...
Vampires might have a faster regeneration than "normal" humans because their whole metabolism is accelerated and that is why they need regular supplies of what they loose because their whole body is turned against them... But the faster regeneration also means a weakening in the body alltogether because of the fast intense use of the nutrients...
That invincibility and whole superhuman myth is only valid in movies...

well soul shroude made a very good point.everything does come with a price and certainly regeneration is one of those things.in life you always have to pay the price to play.as humans we regenerate blood cells and tissue.in animals they can regenerate body parts and like humans they also regenerate blood cells.in some cases the blood cells they manifestcan do great things in medical science.sticking to the issue here with the blood they regenerate do you think that the regenerated blood can provide us a knowledge of how to regenerate other things on us other than cells or blood?

It almost sounds like a compensation for their weakness against light and silver...
The cells from the blood have different times of regeneration... but like all the cells from our body, they come from that unique marvel known as the stem cell... If you want to fantasise a little, that stem cell is the perfect creature... It can morph into anything that surrounds it at a certain point. That is why is so studied for the regeneration processes

Mythic vampires have a magical essence in their blood which excuses them from the normal hazards of aging. They can recover from severe injuries, but not severed limbs. For this reason, they have learned to avoid sharp objects. They proceed through their everlasting lives being extra careful and rarely show an interest in sports. Mostly they become bookworms and wear velvet coats.

If vampirism is a virus or bateria then it is in its best intrest to keep the host complete,Some damage "aggravated"ie massive chunks of flesh removed or flame assisted damage could take longer to regen.
the movies have a fair take on this so far but they do seem to get spiffied up a tad too much.

I don't think vampires can regenerate after being wounded. Real vampires don't have them type of abilities. Mythical ones do, though.

I've never met a vampire...not one that wasn't a raving psychotic, lol, but I'm pretty sure that's just Hollywood.

Personally I believe in regeneration and that it is a slow process and by choise. I personally believe we can choose to make our body immortal even if not a vampire. But of course I am a big believer in the teachings if Linda Goodman. she chose death in the end, but it was her choise. I believe we all have to choose.

lavisbre, everyone has been sick, my family seems to all ways look younger then they are, why I try and look older.
Healing a little faster then most is good, healing like 30 sec. after your cut, would be great. But thats Hollywood for you.

Regardless of how fast a person can 'heal' ....all flesh withers and dies, anything else is subject to the imagination of writers etc.

Sinora your right.

Last night a big dog jumped on me and clawed my chest, the marks were bad and bleeding. This morn you can hardly see one out of the four I had.

I still have the marks, in Hollywood I would have been healed faster, ah how that would have been great.

Vampires as a whole in the traditional sense are only in Hollywood. So yes, any associated powers would also be, only in Hollywood.

Well I believe that you can be a very quick healer. I am I have cut myself and now they aren't really that noticable. I believe Regeneration is true. But as far as how fast hollywood makes it that is just hollywood.

As Ive stated in other posts, Hollywoods portrayal of the supernatural, occult and alternative religions has been an enemy rather than a help and has been intergral in propagating stereotypes and things of that nature. So yes, I have to agree that the regeneration thing is hollywood hype.

I believe it's the fiction that gives them the power to regenerate quicker as many members above have said. I also agree with Jens above and a few other that mention your diet and genetic makeup do make a differance with your healing abilities because I know that I can heal quicker since I have a high count of hemoglobin in my blood which is a healing agent ... discovered the hard way many years ago when donating blood in HS and thats when they tested by pricking your ear and mine kept closing ... the old woman would keep sticking it and squeezing until she decided to use my finger than told me why .... I wanted to hit her on the head with my book! LOL
