I was not able to stare directly into my father's eyes when he passed over, but I heard his last breath. He heard my voice and knew it was ok to go. His eyes were partially closed. I have heard about this too but have not experienced such.

I am sure you would have to be unafraid of things like that. Death is a natural thing but to some people it's scarey. I am familiar with it as I've has alot of people in my life go all with in a 3 year period. I would have looked at my dad's eyes but I couldn't get to his bedside quick enough.

I had heard that if you look into a dying man's eyes, you can see the soul leaving the body, not death itself. But I may be wrong.

I have never seen death in the passage of a person through their eyes, but rather the flash of their life's journey. For me I guess it's not my plight to see death only the life they had.

It was believed that a quick photo of a murder victims eyes could catch the murderer.

Ah I see, your point. I always viewed death in a different light than most so I get to see what is needed to be shown to me. My view of death is not as an ending to a life but a change over from one state to the next. Reincarnation I do believe in but all of us are not chosen to take that path.

Also their have been ones who decided to stay, even though their life was wonderful they can not or feel obligated to become a watcher. They simply leave their bodies and continue on as if nothing has changed.

Now i'm getting off the subject at hand so I give over to others who would like to respond to this forum.

Now what Dabbler says is interesting, I would like to see evidence backing that one. Seeing the murder happen in the murdered victims eyes through a photo taken of them, that would make a forensic team happy less work.

Right after I would guess would be the most opportunistic time to get the job done, since it does take a while for a murdered soul to leave it's body. The shock of the account leave them in a state of limbo for a short time. The disconnect isn't as easy as leaving on ones own accord.

Legend has it that the dying person's last image is "burned" into their eyes and if you look hard and deep, you can see what they did... not true, but good for movies and novels.

Alot of digital cameras have so many features. I would worry that some of the images might hold "fake" visions..... if you get my drift. However, the digital camera is my choice for this type of thing too. I would like to see a picture like this sometime.

I wish I could find the memory card I had with some great picture of spirits. There is however I can try to get my mother to send me of my nephew who has been in the hospital since birth. They took three picture of him with a hand touching his face, we first thought it was a glare off the camera phone but I had the image enhanced and there it was.

In one of the photos it was a very clear aura field that formed the shape of a hand.

Do you mean literally "Death"? The Grim Reaper kind of death? Or just the essence of death?

I've never stared into something's eyes as it died, I've looked into a dead eye, it's very powerful and makes you feel incredibly mortal.

Is seeing someone die and seeing death itself, then, the same thing?

Anann..... I would think that seeing someone die is not the same as seeing death. Death comes in lots of forms. Everything dies differently .... in my opinion. I am not sure I am making sense here but seeing someone die is a slow process in some cases. Instant death might be more like seeing death in its full form. o.O

I work in a hospital ( admin ) and so am around a great many sick people.

I can't say that I've noticed 'death' in the way that you mean, but then I've never thought of looking.

What I have seen is people who look as if they are dying rallying very quickly so I think it's quite difficult unless the signs are very obvious.

What I have noticed is acceptance/peace surrounding one who is close to death.

Being a Paramedic for fifteen years now I can say Yes, I have looked into someone's eyes when they are dying. I have even looked at someone's retina using a lighted scope. The eye's are fixed and dilated. The point where the heart stops beating is different. It typically takes most healthy people approximately 15 seconds to lose total consciousness from the time the heart stops beating. Granted I was usually busy trying to reverse this process. The death I saw was a physical death. Nothing spiritual or supernatural no angels, no ghosts, just a living organism stop living.

I work as funeral director ,i have therefore mostly seen dead persons eyes and faces but i must agree with TegoSanguisitim much of the way here.
I use to work with an pensioned paramedic ,who choose to use the pension to work parttime with funeral direction...quoting TegoSanguisitim : "The eye's are fixed and dilated. The point where the heart stops beating is different. It typically takes most healthy people approximately 15 seconds to lose total consciousness from the time the heart stops beating. Granted I was usually busy trying to reverse this process. The death I saw was a physical death. Nothing spiritual or supernatural no angels, no ghosts, just a living organism stop living."

I see it as the facial look or expressions not the eyes as such...tht tell if a person was angry, happy, relieved or whtever else...some certainly die with a smiling face where others dont...but again ...a lot happens while dying ..pain , wrinkles and so forth should be thought of /concidered in this topic...

Some one above me here mentions grey hands for instance...

The 26 stages of death.

Moment of Death:
1} The heart stops
2} The skin gets tight and grey in color
3} All the muscles relax
4} The bladder and bowels empty

5} The body's temperature will typically drop 1.5 degrees F. per hour unless outside environment is a factor. The liver is the organ that stays warmest the longest, and this temperature is used to establish time of death if the body is found within that time frame.
After 30 minutes:
6} The skin gets purple and waxy
7} The lips, finger- and toe nails fade to a pale color or turn white as the blood leaves.
8} Blood pools at the lowest parts of the body leaving a dark purple-black stain called lividity
9} The hands and feet turn blue
10} The eyes start to sink into the skull
After 4 hours:
11} Rigor mortis starts to set in
12} The purpling of the skin and pooling of blood continue
13} Rigor Mortis begins to tighten the muscles for about another 24 hours, then will reverse and the body will return to a limp state.
After 12 hours:
14} The body is in full rigor mortis.
After 24 hours:
15} The body is now the temperature of the surrounding environment
16} In males, the semen dies
17} The head and neck are now a greenish-blue color
18} The greenish-blue color continues to spread to the rest of the body
19} There is the strong smell of rotting meat
20} The face of the person is essentially no longer recognizable
After 3 days:
21} The gases in the body tissues form large blisters on the skin
22} The whole body begins to bloat and swell grotesquely. This process is speeded up if victim is in a hot environment, or in water
23} Fluids leak from the mouth, nose, eyes, ears and rectum and urinary opening
After 3 weeks:
24} The skin, hair, and nails are so loose they can be easily pulled off the corpse
25} The skin cracks and bursts open in many places because of the pressure of Internal gases and the breakdown of the skin itself
26} Decomposition will continue until body is nothing but skeletal remains, which can take as little as a month in hot climates and two months in cold climates. The teeth are often the only thing left, years and centuries later, because tooth enamel is the strongest substance in the body. The jawbone is the densest, so that usually will also remain.

I do know this to be true. I use to work in a nursing home and became close to one of my residents. One day when I went to work, my last day at that, the RN on my floor said that Ms. Parker wanted to see me and had been askin for me all day. When I went in there and hugged her, she said it was about time. She hugged me and said she felt like dying. I looked at her as she laid back down. Her eyes became so warm and loving. She said I was an angel and then she passed. I got up and walked out. Never hitting the clock to leave. I never went back to get my last check either. So yes, you do see death, but it is beautiful or it was for her.

At the risk of mucking up this thread I have to ask "darkicewolf" how you have come to witness so many of your friends dying? It is rare (and unlikely) that a person as young as your self would lose that many people close to you and witness their deaths as well. Could you elborate a bit? I can understand this could be true especially if one is a soldier in combat for instance.
The statement is a bit unsettling and just seems inflated that's all.

I have. You can tell the moment of death, see the eyes go lifeless, but you don't really see much else. At least, I didn't.

There was talk in posts above about taking a photo of the dead and seeing things. Perhaps this is why in the 17-1800s they posed the bodies and took photos of them?

I agree that it would be traumatic to be looking into any ones eyes when they are dying I don't think I could stand too see the light of their soul go out.

Being a nurse, I have had this experience many times. I don't think I would call it "seeing death" that term can mean many things to many people. What I have just seen mostly is peace and a calm energy about them.

I'm a ff/emt adn I've lost my share of cardiacs- CPR patients... It amazed me the first time I noticed it...

It's lie their eyes go from persons' to... I dunno... objects. It's nothing obvious like a glaze or even a loss of shine, it's just that they sort of.. aren't there anymore.

I do so hope that there is that calm and peace at the times of our passing. I really need that. I have been scared of passing for my whole life...hence, the panic attacks. I have always been a spiritual person and believed in after life. But there is always that WHAT IF? in the back of my mind. That is why I ghost hunt...to find proof and then I can relax about it all.

Since my Mom passed in November, I have waited on proof from her on the other side, as she and I always said we would send a message from the other side, whoever went first. Nothing substantial yet. It shakes my beliefs quite a bit.

That 26 stages of death scares the shit out of me. I know it's a shell, but damn, I don't want that....yea, yea, I know........

I have sat 'death watch' on dozens of people (most of them family or very close friends). Perhaps I am not the best person to ask the question of...I have always known when a person was about to go and known it for a long time before they do die. It didn't have to do with looking them in the eyes. The entire feel of the room changes. You know when you walk in that death is present and waiting, watching to see if this one will belong to him. Not that I see death as a figure so much as a presence.

Other than that, I have a spirit that has been at my side every time there is a questionable situation present. If he knows they will die, I can feel it off of him. I also feel his acceptance and it tempers my own feelings because I don't see death as a bad thing. I mourn for the sadness of the living, or the pain of the dying before they pass, but not the death itself. Crying people makes me cry because I can feel their agony and it tastes so so sad to me, but I feel almost nothing about the passing of the person. They are going to another plane of existance that isn't the same as this one, but I do not believe they cease to exist. Humanity is a burden to some...I don't believe in suicide, but I don't see death as an end, either. I only see suicide as a cowardly last act to a miserable soul that didn't try and didn't want to try.

This sounds abit weird. First we need to know what death looks like. I doubt anyone in this world know that. I belive when someone die and if stare in that persons eyes so can it bring a stronger feeling when the person pass on, and therefore maybe that feeling cause some to think they actually see the death itself.

NymzanSusauren>>> You are absolutely correct about the whole feel of the room changes.... I remember sitting on my stairs to my room with my dad on his death bed in the dining room (only place in our home that the hospice bed would fit) and having a sudden feeling of someone/thing asking me if it was ok... if i would survive... if i wouldnt be angry if they took him then. I knew in my heart that it was his time and i remember thinking to this presence that it was ok that he needed to stop hurting.... moments later i went in to check on him and he was gone.... it was a very spiritual experiance for me.... and 5 years later i can still remember the calm i felt when i heard the presence.
And while I was visiting my grandmother after my dad and her husband died... I felt it... I knew that it was only a matter of time before her passing... I could feel how broken her heart was.... the feeling in the room was changed from warm and loving to cold and lonely. I felt like all she needed was the sunshine...

Czaritsa>>> thank you for the terribly graphic discription lol :o) *slight shudder*

I've been around shortly after death has occured... i wanted to go and see my nephew before they took him from my sisters house... just overwhelmingly curiouse i suppose.... but when i saw him in his casket... it was like he wasnt even the same person.... like a doll.... gave me horrible dreams and very restless nights for many nights after. I couldnt IMAGINE at all looking into some ones eyes upon death.... I already have nightmares of what my sister saw finding her son the way she did....

My dad told me and i have seen it in historic fiction as well that in vietnam and conflicts a fataly wounded soldier is told "Look into my eyes.""I am going to hypnotis you."This is said to help a person sort of like last rites.I have heard that some people look beyond with their eyes depending on the deration of the dissassocation and the trama they experiance ,leaving a dying impression seems likely.but if that can be seen of recorded some how I would if "scheduled to die"wire up on the way out to get the first "recording/picture" of the after life.

If the person is blind, could you still see death in their eyes?

The idea is interesting, but I don't think any camera or person has actually seen death etched into someone's eyeballs.

There is no doubt an emotional experience when someone dear passes and the last breathe escapes- but can we really personalize "death" to say that we can "see" it?

I don't know about this "seeing death" point.

I've seen people go from conscious and breathing to full arrest, more times than I care to count.

Imagine a doll's eyes... that's what a recently dead person's eyes resemble. You don't see the iris opening or closing (when you shine a beam into them). They just don't look alive to me anymore.
