I feel we are too easily ruled by primitive religious superstition instead of seeking for ourselves education and developing thereby the scientific curiosity needed to further our inidividual pursuit and discovery of truth. And without that key faculty, we become intellectually lazy and spiritually stunted as we instead turn to religions' simplistic answers and superstitious beliefs, to already established belief systems that cannot and will not endure true intellectual or spiritual scrutiny... whether that be Judeo-Christian religion, other major world religions, or paganism, wicca, or other "New Age" belief systems. In my opinion, all of these distract and distance us from seeking and recognizing the Truth... which is a continual process and not something automatically acquired simply via some religious initiation rite and subsequent devotion to religious dogmae.

Hey... our opinions on this topic were asked, and I am responding bluntly with my own on this subject. You are all welcome to disagree just as I also ought to be welcome to share my own opinion.

i don't feel a national/world holiday is needed as well...
witches have their own special days and even though they are not recognized by the nations, what's wrong with that?
nationally and worldly recognized holidays often get... skewed.... and end up being less than they were intended to be
look what happened to christmas!
i would be disappointed if that were allowed to happen to other meaningful days

I think it would be good so we can step out of the shadows of the dark ages and teach people that christians hunting down witchs in the name of prgress is wrong. Hunting evil is still evil (not that witchs are evil, but they percieve them as such)

I think that some people I've encountered feel like they are victims of descrimination...I feel that everyone is descriminated in one way or another for something.

If you have a fascination, belief, or talent with something, just go with it. The more natural and true people are with themselves the more they will be accepted.

It seems like avoiding commercial holidays based on witchcraft would represent the freedom and beauty of the practice.

Groups of friends and family getting together for an actual purpose instead of spending hundreds of dollars on useless presents is far more productive and makes a lot more sense to me.

If it'll happen we will return to the ''burn the witch alive days''.

The world will never accept ''differences.''

Just enjoy your practice and be proud of what you are.

I don't care because there aren't any holidays for Agnostics like me, but all that matters is, that I get holidays even though I'm not religious, now that's fun :D

I also don't think a national holiday is needed. Many bible thumpers would protest and it was always my belief that wiccans and those who practice other ancient religions preferred to be 'in the shadows' so to speak.

I don't think any religion is one you really know too much about unless it is your own. And I am not so into witchcraft so I don't know. Its not as big of deal as it use to be. People are always for and against things. Let them have their own oppions and just go on with their lives cause their veiw really should never affect your life, or your veiws. Some witches over do it, others I have met are very nice. That is my own veiw of it. Also...holloween is totally not what it use to be.

I think that although there is quite a large community of 'witches' on this website, one must remember that they are the minority still and that the vast majority of people are unwilling to accept anything out of the norm.

On a different note, why would a national holiday be needed? There are allready many pagan holidays that people follow... why should it be made public, and forced upon society? If it was, it surely wouldn't be as sacred. It would undoubtedly become commercialized in some way. Is that really what a true witch would want- a mock holiday?

Muslims in this country practice Ramadan, although it isn't recognized as a national holiday. Jews recognize holidays and don't get time off from work for it, as do many other cultures. But they still celebrate, because it is what THEY believe in, and it doesn't matter whether or not others recognize it or not.

So many have gone into witchcraft looking for a different alternative to an established religion. Well, newsflash, you aren't being as different as you think, because you still follow a certain code, certain rules. You have a certain belief system, and you would be just as bad as the big guys if you tried to force it on others. Why would you need a national holiday? If you are secure in what YOU believe, then it shouldn't matter if you were the only one who believed it!

Now, not all people who follow witchcraft [or any religion, for that matter], are like this. It is my personal opinion that religion isn't something to be advertised, but practiced, and if you are true to your faith then it shouldn't matter how many people recognize it, as long as it is what YOU believe in.

Do you mean a world Wiccan day or a Witch of all kinds type of day? There is a big difference. I'm not sure everyone would want to be lumped together without it being clarified.

I don't see why not...it might add a tad of legitimacy to it. Wicca is a religion but not all forms of witchcraft are so it would depend on how they phrased it and wanted it to be viewed I guess. If people want it I see no harm in it. Yet again it may cause more confusion.

There are already many Pagan holidays--Pagans do not necessarily need a nationally or worldly recognized day. For those of us who practice or worship within the Pagan faith--that in itself is enough. Freedom to believe in our religion without fear of persecution is enough for now.

The last thing the wiccan religion needs is to start trying to shove anything into people's faces like other religions do. So many are hypocrites that even though they themselves do it, they would still have problems with wiccans doing the same.

A bit of legitimacy? I know I didn't read that on here...It sounds like a personal doubt issue on that one.

I don't care if you make it a national day or not. I thought there were loads of INTERNATIONAL days observed. Get the right calendar and you will even find the days marked on it. What more do you need? If you know the day and know others like you celebrate it. It is like the Jewish days; they know and celebrate them even if the rest of the world ignores the little marking on the calendar.

My belief about it is very open. I was Christian and as an American Indian with backgrounds in German and Irish cultures. If you just focus on the religions of all of those including the points that I have been to Presbeterian, Catholic, Penecostal, etc of the Christian backgrounds and had a Jewish boyfriend once...you get a strange idea about the supernatural states and the human's perceptions of it. Then, I began hanging out with a Coven and being bothered heavily by the local Satanists.

It made me very avidly curious about every countries idea of theology. If you look closely at them with a broad base and open mind, most religions meld into near identical beliefs. It is really hard to see unless you change some names, and other things around into obscure ideas that you apply to each, but you'd be surprised if you really looked into it.

I love the American Indian belief system. If you follow it, Christianity isn't far off from it at all. God is present in all things, so why not have supernatural representations of each of them. Just because Indians see them as gods and guides doesn't mean they do not exist in Christianity, but white people are nearly blind to nature. Then, add the Irish...Lol.

It took me a long time to develop what I see as my own odd religious belief, but I can identify with most religions because of it and have a better understanding of most societies too.

First let me say - Christmas, Easter, Halloween - were all originally pagan holidays that have been taken over and warped to get more people to accept Christianity.

Although we do have a Wiccan Pride day I believe a holiday for us would be lovely.

I am a bit nostaligic though and wish the burning times were something that was taught in our schools. I think it is just as important to our history as other unsavory things humans have done such as - slavery, stealing the land and killing off native Americans, etc...

So not only should we be able to at least claim our current holidays as such, but there should be a holiday dedicated to the burning times.

I personally feel that there is too much prejudice against witches today. Even being a great country of the USA where the freedom of religion is in our Constitution, a lot of us still have to keep quiet for fear of ridicule. Although at the same time there are a great number of witches who are doing their best to get communities started in their neighborhoods to bring the Craft into a positive light.

As far as giving us another day on the calendar year besides All Hallows Eve, I don't see why we do need one. All Hallows Eve has existed long before the existence of the world calendar - it's probably one of the oldest "holidays". If anything, they could have a Witch's Awareness Day or something like that.

I went back to read everyone's responses after posting my own and I just wanted to clear something up.

People easily confuse Wiccans as being Witches. Here's the thing...like with Pagans, not all Wiccans are Witches and not all Witches are Wiccans.

Wiccans are people who practice the RELIGION of Wicca. Witches are people who use magick to bring about spiritual changes that benefit themselves or others. Witches practice the Craft - the art of magick.

Me personally? I am a Wiccan because that is the religion I practice, but I am also a Witch because I do crystal work and tarot.

I hope I didn't mix up my facts too much. That's how I see the differences between the two though - one is an artform, more or less, and the other is a religion. Two different aspects of life paths.

Well, not exactly. I am Wiccan and it is kinda redundant to say I am a witch.

While there are many different forms of witchraft - they are also considered to mainly be attaced to religions. Wicca is pretty much both - rolled into one. No where will you find a "Wiccan Bible" if you will, but you will find all Wiccan books to have spells and rituals listed within them.

Which really shows the witchcraft aspect of Wicca. Some of our ceremonies and sabats would have religious aspects to them.

Again this is all a wonderful reason for these things to be taught and celebrated more widely.

Witch craft should be noticed in the world a little more. Appreciated in a way. Some forms of it can actually help people. It's not something to fear.

Hmm I think you guys should be more out there. Society is starting to change and accept supernatural things. It wont be easy at all. But witch hunts have basically stopped. There are still psychos out there probably (very few amount) that hunt witches and Vampires but only because they have no life and it could be apart of their culture. In America it would be more widely accepted than in India. But less accepted than in some tribal communtities

Witches don't need a holiday, nor practitioners of any religion...In the good ol' US of A, every day is supposed to be about having the freedom to choose what religion you want.
If the purpose of making a holiday would be to maybe stop the hate...I don't think it would do anything, for instance, Black Pride month doesn't stop racists from hating.

It's just life I suppose.

in the area i live in, a wiccan awareness day wouldn't even get recongnized. mainly due to all the christian churches surrounding the place. so i have to stay hidden so as not to get a negative reaction from everybody else. but the idea itself would be a nice change.

I personally don't feel witches need approval from non witches, but i dont think anyone needs approval from anyone. its to each his own i guess, which comes from my thick skin i guess. a holiday is cool but not needed in my opinion. heck we all have any day we want.

Dont you celebrate the day the government recognized it as a valid religion? If you want to celebrate something than celebrate it, there is no need to force it upon others. THAT is what the problem here in the US is. And a mark on the calendar is only going to be for marketing purposes so who is going to reep the benefits in the end?

Nothing wrong with a day off work, if it’s around a witches sabot all the better lots of merriment and mead for all…. I vote yes to a holiday or two, mind you the current ones related to the religion right now are just assimilations of pagan events so I guess it doesn’t matter…… mind you in England we still have may day extra

Ps to all you who had a very heavy view on this … please take a chill pill

I would love to say hell yes, but we have to face it. If you even mention Pagan or otherwise, some christian is gonna start talking about things they don't know about and that gets old. Besides, Do we really want to give ammo to another self righteous televangelist?????

How do you feel about the witch ways in today life? Do you think we should be more out there in the world? What do you feel about the usa and the world maken us a world day on the calendar other then All Hallows Eve?
I honestly think that if you are proud of your culture go for it... but I do think that the reason most keep to themselves is the harsh ridicule of those close minded idiots that are out there. There is always going to be some one out there that will protest and get angry over your life.... I dont understand it at all but that is what happens..... being of a different religion is much like being of a different sexual orientation.... or race even.... there are always going to be stone throwers..... I feel that if one could unify the pagan religions kinda like the gay pride parade.... that it would be awesome.... I just know how the bible thumping crazies are.... I mean hell right now we are fighting "in the name of god"

I agree with what you said earlier, about not all wiccans being witches, but the world dosn't see it that way. I'm going through a situation with my daughters school. They think just because she's not a social butterfly, all cuttsie and fairytales, that my being wiccan is warping her. My daughter is still finding herself. Now I have to go to school meetings and justify myself to them so they'll leave her alone.

People just need to respect the differences in others instead of wanting everyone to be a clone. A local radio DJ, who unfortunately recently passed, used to say 'They make fun of us because we are different. We make fun of then because they are the same.'

Not every single religion in the world has recognised religious holidays on the calendar. I am Pagan and I celebrate the Sabbats with my family who are also Pagan. The nationally recognised holidays are usually only of the major religios such as Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc. But everyone celebrates their own religious holidays as they see fit and when they want don't they so I don't think that we need a Pagan religios day actually recognised on the national calendar.

Anyway, Christmas was actually adopted by the Christians from the Pagans of old Britain and their festival, called Yule, is still celebrated today at the same time of year. Therefore Christams is basically the Christians trying to eradicate Paganism by adopting the Pagan holiday and renaming it. This is also true of Easter. So, we already have two festivals on the national calendar don't we!! That is aside from halloween!!

P.S. I'm sorry if this offends any Christians, this is just my beliefs, plese don't take offence. You are entitled to your own beliefs just as I am entitled to my own beliefs. Thank you.

If America can't even accept homosexuals, I doubt they'd be any more accepting of witches. Then again, Wiccans have probably won more cases about their rights than LGBTQ people, so you never know. Maybe it's easier to accept something you can scoff at.

yes halloween is all candy, but it is still fun and we still celebrate it appropriatly.

as a modern pagan myself, i still feel like i have to hide certain aspects of myself from others. i wear a pentagram which is what i consider my personal totem and my source of power, and i still have to wear it under my shirt and hidden away from my bible-thumping family and fiancee's jewish family as well.

i am becoming more comfortable with my "coming out" as it has been a part of me all of my life (my beliefs) but yet, it still feels kindred to what other alt communities have felt...being pagan is more mainstream now, but STILL SHUNNED and mislabeled/misunderstood by MANY.

In a Capitalistic society all holidays eventually become “about the money” and nothing more in a general sense. It would be nice for the US to have more religious holidays but then it might be easier to have one day to celebrate all religions. This would bring up to many arguments of what is a religion and what is just a belief. Many still refuse to recognize Wicca as a religion even though the US government has. Most other religions I know of quietly celebrate their own holidays especial the Native American ones. They even have a strong lobbyist group and would have a good chance at getting their own national holiday more so than Wicca.
