I was looking through some random sites and stumbled across a really good one on this topic.
It reads as follows;

In the daylight world, we go to work or school, we eat, do the shopping, pay the bills … we build relationships with other people. Essentially, we do the work of creating and maintaining our lives. But at night, in sleep, we enter a world that may resemble the waking world of mundane reality, or it may be a world that is medieval or futuristic or something else entirely; time becomes completely distorted; and we meet a host of characters including faces that are familiar, faces that are not, and faces that look like they have risen from the pages of books on mythological creatures.

We may wake from a dream joyous or sad or absolutely terrified. And at some point, most of us will ask, “What was that all about?” Are dreams significant or is a nightmare merely a bit of dinner gone wrong? Many ancient, primal cultures believed that the dream world was at least as significant as the waking world. People used their dreams for personal guidance and some people in the tribe, like Black Elk, the holy man of the Oglala Sioux tribe, dreamed dreams that carried significance for the entire culture. As some cultures evolved in a more scientifically rational direction, the belief that dreams were of importance to human beings was cast away. Then a man came along, Carl Gustav Carus (1779-1868), who postulated that in addition to human beings having a conscious existence, they also had an unconscious mind that was simultaneously biological, material, and psychological in nature.

I'd like to hear your opinions

I honestly think the significance of dreams varies from person to person. There are a lot of technical explanations of dreaming, but what meaning people enters into the non-empirical belief realm... throw in the "lucid dreamers" who can exercise some amount of dream control and you start to muddy the waters a bit.

I have had bad dreams the day before something bad happens but mostly my dreams are extremely bizarre and when I tell my husband the next day about them I get the ok wheres the closet mental hospital look:) I agree that sometimes we dream stuff that mean something but that a lot of the time our dreams are for entertainment.

dreams are just as real as reality the human mind can not differentiate between what happens in a dream and a usual day in you live the electrical signals from the brain

All my dreams are not alike. Some seem to have an inner meaning, while others seem like entertaiment. Others just make you say WTF because they make no sence at all.

any dreams i have never reflect on anything dealing with my day or whatnot, and untill about 02 i never really dreamt and had any specific person i knew in my dream except for the one where my grandparents house set on fire......idk i dont have massively bizzar dreams, last time i had a bizzar dream was when i was very little, now they are all reality based....sometimes i think they get based on fears i have and taking them to a different level, or even things i want....idk its a little herd to explain....

I think most dreams are simply reflections of things happening in your life currently through the use of personal symbols. For example, if you are just realizing you are in love with someone and you always connected roses to love, you may have a dream in which your loved one is handing you roses (or something like that). I think, by using these personal symbols in your dreams, it helps you figure out current events through a different perspective.

Dreams are different to every person and the interpetations may be different as well. If one is a spiritual type of creature, then symbols may mean something or the dream plane is a place where many go to seek answers to questions. The dream plane may be conquered and mastered after years of practice as to where it's place of solace or a place of answers.

I agree with what Stormwind said as far as dreams being different fro person to persone. However, I think that even when looking at a single person's dreams, there may be several different modalities.

Some of my dreams are obvious to me as my mind trying to process or make sence out of events from the previous day. Some are just wild and fanciful. Some are frightening and dark. Some may even be trying to "tell me something". I don't think they all happen for the same reason or cary the same importance.

I agree with KC.

If you really can remember your dreams you'd probably notice a lot of them are linked to thing that you experienced during the day, or recently.. events and thoughts that are on your mind a lot.

Not that this has any super signficant purpose, it's just your mind recovering from the day's activity and trying to make sense of evertything it had to process.

Birra and KC share the same views I do. Throughout the day, we witness and see a lot of things. However, by design, we filter out what is not pertinent to our current actions. Those items that are filtered are retained in short term memory. I have heard dreams can be the 'filter dump' of the day, wherein the images and other situations out of our immediate field of concentration are processed.

I personally think that dreams are things the mind creates because it never shuts off even when you're sleeping. However there is quite a considerable amount of significance to dreams and reality. Just the other night I was attacked in my state between sleep and wakeing by a night terror. This night terror was a warning and when I awoke, I quickly went to my mother and told her of what I saw. We did blessing spells and it turns out that we had a late night visitor.

ohhhh...this is one of my favourite topics!!!
I believe in it,it's amazing but hell it's totally true...
Everytime I go to sleep I try to guess what I'm going to dream but never guess, but my subconcious shows me dreams that later, when I remember them,I thought about them for a split of a second during that day,or week...
It's amazing but I once read a book called;
"the door to subconciousness" and it was with simple memory exercises.though the meaning of them is different.
I kinda "opened" that door, and from that day on,I had the weirdest dreams and I began to see weird things. It was creepy but it was still amazing...

ooh Dreams... before I get anyone here telling me it's not possible, let me say that it's been medically proven. I do not dream, but upon very rare occasion, I am what most call a dream walker... no dreams of my own can the ability to walk through others, from what I have seen of dreams the subconsious of people tend to be the opposite of their conscious side, their strengths become weaknesses their fears become hopes... and sometimes people think they a giant hotdog running from hungry giants...

I Think Most Dreams not all are a manifestation of our fears and worries. That Take hold of us when we can not put them aside.
During the day we can ignore them but as we sleep they seep out to let us know they are still there.

I am sure some of us live for our dreams... a time when whatever menial things we do during the day are able to be casted aside and we can enter another level of subconscious. Both realms bleed into each other, dreams can make us happy while we are awake... And the car wreck during the day and produce lingering anxieties in the dream state.

Sometimes our dreams can be self-fulfilling. Two night ago I dreamed I would get in a fender bender, and yesterday I did. Did my waking phobia help initiate a atmosphere where I was bound to get hit? Was my dream supposed to be warning? Or was it merely a random dream that by concidence became real?

I don't know if there is a way to scientifically study what occurs to us our sleep. We can write down what we remember of our dreams, we have have tests done to show our mental wavelengths, we can seek guidance from spiritual mentors.... but we will never fully understand or remember what happes for the 8 hours we sleep the way we remember the 8 hours of working...

And others- as I have found out- hold meaning... They can tell you what will happen, before events occur...

sometimes dreams are relative to every day occurances that just remind you of what u do every day.

some dreams i've had are thing that i've though happening and my mind has interprited the possibility of the entire world if that would actually happen.

other dream i have i can never remember until they occure in real life months or years later (deja vu/ premention)

the others just make no sence at all ever.

so dreams are always strange and idk if anyone can ever totaly figure out what happens or where they truly come from.

i too think dreams mean different things for different people
but i do believe they mean things and that we can learn from them.
i don't think dream dictionaries are worth the paper they are printed on because if i dream of snakes it' s going to mean something different than if someone who fears snakes dreams about them

i do think that what you eat can sometimes affect your dreams, but as to whether that is giving you a clearer look into your own subconscious or not, i do not know

i interpret my dreams the best i can for myself, usually by playing on how they made me feel. i've even done things that dreams inspired me to

dreams are fun but are very personal

The brain needs dreams to stay healthy. REM sleep is very important to our mental and physical health... deny ourselves REM and we will have 'issues'!

Like what was said, our brains take in what we have experienced that day/week/month/etc along with what we read and see on TV or movies and does its thing....

I know we've all awakened and wondered what the heck was that all about?

Dreams are personal and vary and differ from person to person.

There are those that have true visions and insights in their dreams.. and there are those that have a reocurring dream that hardly varies, except for it unfolding more and more - like the one I have had for years that I have in my profile... it is telling me something, but perhaps I am not ready for it.

To be honest, I don't care what causes dreams. I love them. Good ones, bad ones, nightmares...I don't care. For me, dreams allow me to step outside the mundane normalcy of my life and step into something fantastic, or something romantic, or something terrifying...and then I awaken and realize that everything is the same as it was and that no matter what the dream was about, I have another chance to set it all right.

I believe that dreams are definitely connected to daily living. They often give us fore sight of things that may come to pass, and should be heeded as such. This may be true for a lot of our dreams, but we do have random dreams also. Some of our dreams are entirely bizarre, and give us no insight at all. Some are definitely brought on by a meal of spicy foods too close to bedtime. I get those occasionally, and refer to them as my Mexican food nightmares! lol I am glad that they are explainable, because they are really weird!

I must agree with NocturnisOrchid, dreams are different with every person. I've awakened on several occasions levitating an inch or so above the bed over the years. I also am sure that I sometimes use astral projection in my sleep. The subconscious is a powerful thing, your conscious limits your abilities with doubts and mundane thoughts.

I actually put a lot of stock in my dreams because for the most part I dream of things that will happen eventually. But I also have a lot of nightmares about things that make no sense. Like I'm always running away from something and I'm terrified to stop... but I don't know what or whom I'm running from and I don't know why I'm so scared to stop.... weird huh?

I beleve it all depends on the deepth of your sleep state, some are to reach your subconscous other is for you to be guided to info form your spiritual guide, so it si always depending on the deepth of the sleep state you are in.
Kind a like some hypnosus a little but with no exterior influence.

Acording to psycologists Carl Jung and Freud, dreams play an important role in our lives. They are our subconsice, telling us things. They compensate for our being awake. I learned this from my Psycology teacher at school.

Forgive me for stating what I think may be obvious, but our dreams are most definitely doorways to our subconscious (rather vice versa). Our minds don't shut down while our bodies rest. Minds can dwell on events that have happened years ago...even develop scenarios we may not have focused on while fully conscious. Our minds take in more information thatn we can process in a conscious state -- it would be overload.

i think the majority of us agree that there is some significance in every one of our dreams weather it is to aid in dealing with the seciety our physical bodies demands, or other more prophetic reasons. its just that we all have our own way to desypher the meaning.

I would like to applaud KissTheRain for framing a thread topic so well. Concise background on the question and even a link to cite her source. This is how it's done!

To dreams themselves, I lend my opinion to the many. Often just processing through information, trying to work out some problem, or random firing.

I saw a few references to predicting the future on this thread, but in my experience, I usually see those like this: "Oh wow...I dreamed that!" Sound familiar? Not super helpful if they're just referenced afterward. But it got me to thinking about prophetic dreams.

In religious doctrines, prophets often warn mankind about some upcoming event they learned of through dreams, or a deity communicates some behavior desired.

One example (and there are many) is the Old Testament dream of Joseph where he learns of the imminent Israelite slaughter of male children which leads him to move his family to Egypt, thus saving the savior.

This sort of prophetic dream serves a measurable purpose. The slaughter does occur; the move obviously ensures the child's safety. Do you have dreams that follow this pattern? A prophetic dream that actually helps, not just a deja vu experience.

And if so, to what do you attribute the source of such a dream?

Dreams are a window the the subconcious. Our fears, feelings, wishes, ect. all come through in our dreams. I am not sure about the significance, but for all I think it is different.

I wonder about this sometimes. I believe that dreams could be a link to memories of prior lives which our 'soul' experienced. I say this, because in my dreams, I've been to places of old, spoken in foreign languages (even languages that don't exist today), I've even died countless times in my past lives, in many different ways. But mostly tho, I end up wandering throo my dreams. I travel on foot, sometimes by car, and even by means of leviation. In my dreams I have powers which I do not have in my waking world.

So, if this is a doorway to some other realm or just memories of times gone by, I would be intrigued to know how it exists and how I could control my dreams better. I would love to learn more about this. :)

Of course dreams are a doorway, every relgion of ancient times has sought this.Different types of mediation ,lucid dreaming,O.B.E.,astral flight or travel. All these and many more are there if one knows how to use them.
I personally use my dreams and astral travel to learn more about my past lives.Past life regression most of the time is used when one is asleep or trance like state.

I think that sometimes dreams are a way to blow off steam, and sometimes dinner gone wrong. Eating hot spicy food before bed is asking for nightmares. But for the most part, if the dream can be recalled, it can be interpreted, and applied some way into our every day lives. The brain really does have an ulterior motive, I think anyway!

i believe that dreams are very importent things. sometimes they reflect on how we feel what we want what we feel is to become & maybe even say what IS to become. but dreams also can be our imagination going wild.
dreams are kind of confusing to be because for one thing mine are so bizzare most of the time. like once i dreamed i was a slave to this crests on these large castle walls..i specifically remeber a lion tugging on a HUGE snake then flying out the window it was also a casltle lol. that one still confuses & freaks me lol

Well the way I see it not all dreams are views into the subconscious other wise you wouldn't have dreams about work or about video games if you been playing them all day. Here a thought if you ever heard of lucid dreams and that fact that some people believe that dreams are window into the subconscious?

with me on dreams it varies. could be i ate something that did not agree with me something to spicy of sort and have bad dreams. then at times i could want something real bad for example. when i was pregnant i really wanted a girl thought i was having a boy but all my baby dreams were of a girl. i had a girl.

other times it could be me trying to work something out from normal waking days in a dreams such as problems at work relationship, kids. it all depends. but there is books out there that out line certain aspects of dreams for you. a dream analysis book.

Dreams are an odd subject. So many possible paths that can be taken, only multiplied by the number of people who have them.
I have had 'prophetic' dreams. Only one that I saw as that beforehand.
Never had a nightmare. The closest is how I came up with this username to use. While in that dream, and afterwards, I didn't feel the fear I would think you would feel as a nightmare.
Dunno.
Dreams can be many things for many different people. For some it is a way to get emotions out that you fear to display while awake. For others they show you things you've seen in the past and had forgotten.
So many possible options for so many things.
Dreams are fascinating, that much is for sure. heh

My dreams come in waves. I'll go a long time with no recollection of them other then a lingering deja vu and then there will be a period of time, a few weeks usually, when they are very vivid and meaningful. They usually revolve around some sort of stress or question but I thoroughly believe that they are windows into the future, at least in some cases, or signposts to follow.

Dreams are a way for your mind to store memories mostly. During the night your brain uses dreams to process what happened during the day. Since i started using meditation to do that, i don't dream anymore.

Dreams take over us during our sleep. Yes, they are an unconsious effort. We don't have to try to dream. I woke up this morning absolutely ecstatic from a dream that I had, a dream that I waited months for. I don't know what it means but perhaps it means something great. Maybe, but maybe not as well. Maybe if we wake up happy, something good will come from it, or if we wake up sad or horrified, something bad will come from it. Only time can tell, and only God knows.

From what I have learnt over the years dreams fall into a few categories.

The can be just purely for entertainment while the mind relaxes and stores away the days events.

They can be memories from trips to the astral, where you have recieved instructions or lessons.

They can be repressed memories. Reviews of past events. Even of past lives that we have lived.

They can be visions of the future. Of things that are about to occur.

So dreams have various meanings and are sources of inspiration and information.

I've had dreams which have freaked me out, i write poetry and instead i wrote something more along the lines of a essay / rant about my dream, i tried to go through what it meant and came to the conclusion that there was nothing in link with it, i even tried to place 'stress' into the equasion, but when it comes to the point of actually linking it, i never found any way to do it.

Dreams for me, seem as pointless as pointing a pen at someone and shouting bang and expecting them to fall down dead.
(I mean, who dreams about entering a house with 4 random people, 1 injured, going into a room and everyone but you dying from a dragon... seriously? i'm not gonna say the rest of the dream, it was weird.)

There's my thoughts.

I belive that they could be a door way into a totally different world or they could be dreams of your past times as a different person that you once were like I said in another forum that you go to a different plain of existence and I think it is ture that dreams are of you in the past and we are going into a memory that was soppoused to be long gone but it slipped through the craks and crepped forward to revel itself to yur allready memories that are right there and now that new memory is there and you explain to all your friends and the well think you are crazy but your not I useually have dreams about dragons and fantesy stuff so maybe in the past I have all ways lived in a totally different world and then I did something right and I moved on so you just belive what you want but take what I said to heart

I truly believe that dreams are capable of giving us a view of our subconscious. I also believe they can provide us with visions from our past lives; this is especially true of the "dreams" we have when we're in that stage of sleep where we feel very well rested and we are asleep, but we're still very much aware of our surroundings. I've talked with several people about this and they all agreed with me on this one.

My mother and all of the women on her side of the family have a very accute sence of their dreams, we always have and I hope to pass on the trait to my female children, It can be very useful.

ideally from what i understand, dreams are a sort of buffer. Aplace for our minds to subconciously work out the events of the day, and organize our thoughts so that it limits the amount of discoradance with what we already know. Furthermore, dreams are then refed into our mind with the intent of teaching us something, now depending on the person the imagry will vary, afterall our subconcious is like interprutive literature, and just takes the author of the dream to decide its form.

As to most people that know me, I am not a superstious person. However, being in the Occult for a very long time, not exactly a believer in the supernatural, but definitely the paranormal, and the certainly the practice of mind over matter. The human mind is powerful enough, from my experiences, to have a connection to someone else, and tap into their consciousness. It has been practiced through trancendental meditation, energy chanelling, astral projections...and this various practice....dream scaping...which is the practice of tapping into other people's dreams, so I believe that it is genuinely possible....

I think dreams can represent many things.
They can be symbolic to the issues a person is dealing with- a venting of stress, worry, etc. therefore giving us strange, unusual dreams that make no real sense.
I think dreams can also be visions- things to be aware of, both good and bad, of things to come into the path of our life. Alot of times, even those come with symbolic meanings that have to be unravelled much like puzzle pieces in order for them to make sense.
I think too, its a way for spirits to communicate with us, since that is when our guards are down the most and our mind is open. Astral travel, out of body experiences, etc. sometimes are a result of these. I have talked with some who I truly believed glimpsed into a past life from the details of the dreams they described.

Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.
--Edgar Allan Poe--

i have always believed that our dreams are doorways to both our past and future as well as the present. One dream may point to something that has happend while the next points to something that may. Of course there is always that odd dream that simply is an after effect of to much rum but for the most part i believe all dreams have meaning you just have to know how to look at them

I always thought that dreams serve one of two purposes: to eather warn you of something that may happen or to show you your hidden desires or fears (in the case of nightmares)

I shall team up with the nightjoker for a second, dreams are that of our utmost desires, that is why recurring dreams happen it is all based on how badly you really want something to happen. It is your subconscious acting upon your needs.

I believe that dreams are a way for our subconscience to process events. Either stored ( things from the past) or current (things that happened that day)

There are nights that I do not dream, and others that I have only 1 dream, and yet others where I have to many to count......
