Some believe that babies and small children are capable of being more sensitive to spirits. They say that children can see, talk, and interact with spirits.(more so than adults)
They say that this could also be a possibility for imaginary friends and such.

Some people disagree and say that it is solely because of an active, over-active, even wild imagination.

The reason that this is a subject for me is because my 5 yr old son, out of the blue one day, told me he saw a big black thing at the top of the stairs, move through the hallway.
He said it looked like a black ball, then kind of like a man in a black suit. He had a hard time explaining it to me, but basically he said it was see-through. He was absolutely intent and adamant on it.
For some reason it gave me chills. Because my son doesnt usually tell me stuff like that, (it was out of character for him.)
And the first thought that popped in my head was "a possible shadow" a classification of a certain type of spirit.
And of course..my son wanted to go investigate it. But he wouldn't go without me, and we didn't find anything.
I havent had any paranormal experiences in that house, but i never doubt that its a possibility in any place or home.

My question for this is... Could this be true about how children can be sensative toward spirits, or is it simply an over active imagination?

I'm looking foreward to the responses.

Well, I believe children can see these beings. I have no proof or theory based on this, but it's just what I believe. Their minds don't think like adults yet, so they have the room or ability to see these things and believe in what they saw. I've never heard about a child you saw "something" and just shrugged it off like it was nothing. Thinking about this, makes me wonder if children truy have imaginary friends... could their friends be something/someone else like a spirit or something? But that's a whole different thread of it's own.

In my opinion a child can indeed see more than an adults can. A child is more curious, does not have the common snese that an adult has, and is more suseptable (i hope i spelt it right) to this kind of phenomena due to their keen perception.

I feel that if a child can learn to walk and talk in the first 2 years, think of what else it can achieve.

The mind of the child is more opne for one and also more sensetive, it is also more willing to beleive so more easy to get in touch with the paranormal realm, as we grow older we tend to toss away mroe and more things, and this is why children can sens more and easier the event happening

Children are much more open to it, simply because their brains have not been trained to not see it, they have not been taught that it is only imagination and there fore closed that part of their brain off.

I believe it is quite possible.

I used to see things when I was little, but the earliest I can remember something taking form was when I was seven years old. I always referred to the spirit as "the man in black." My dad always told me "Look around, be observant," when I told him I saw things others couldn't or didn't mention they could see or saw in the past. My mom never did believe me until I started becoming unstable because I was believing what some spirits said to me. I still see some spirits, including my dad and a friend, who committed suicide.

As for child's perspectives on spirits, my nephew made me cry one night. I was babysitting him and he said he had to go into Pappy's room and check on him. I went to the door and Tyler, who was four years old at the time, was carrying on a conversation with my deceased father! He came back to my room and told me that something about Pappy saying it was okay if I heard noises in the kitchen and living room, it's him and he is a ghost. And he went on to say that him and Nala (my cat) see him all the time and he missed the talks I use to have with him.

Now considering my sister told her son that Pappy went away and wasn't coming back. We have to wonder how Tyler would even make up a story like that. But I can say that I know he wasn't lying. Or at least I don't think he was.

I believe small children are more sensitive to spirits than even a pre teen might be. The younger child has not had any negative influence as to what is *right or wrong* when it comes to being receptive to anything that could be labeld *supernatural*.

My youngest grandgirl Taya is 2 1/2 and she has a *spirit* friend. No I do not feel this is her imagination, she was very shy about letting us know about the friend. But when Taya began talking to her, the friend would pass on *comments* from my father who passed on 2 years ago. Before Taya ever knew him.

I very much believe so yes.

As we grow older we start to believe in things less & less, therefore I think even if we truly did see something, we'd dismiss it, as like you first said, a shadow...For a child anything is still possible, they haven't been tainted with people saying things aren't true, they wouldn't dismiss anything they see, because they wouldn't know it wasn't a normal thing.

Just my two cents ;p

I am so glad to hear these responses.

I had absolutely no idea how to handle this type of situation, I don't want to be one of those parents who dismiss my child's conversations on this subject, and I don't want to make him feel like he's crazy or stupid or just making things up when it could very well be a true and honest statement.
This is very helpful. :)
Thank you all for the responses.

Oh, most definitely. my kids were very in tune with the other realms when they were young. I've always lived a Pagan lifestyle, and my kids were right on top of things. They didn't have imaginary friends, they were actually having a conversation with deceased family, especially my mom's Mother. She was there for me at certain times!

While I will admit, I am a natural skeptic, I do know that things happen that we cannot explain.
My youngest daughter would sometimes sit up at night talking to the wall. I think she was 3 or so then. A few times we would sit and listen to her discussions and slowly we were able to figure out that she was talking with my (then GF) dead mother. Her mother had passed away years ago, before I even met our childs mother.
My Sky had some rather interesting discussions for sure. Throughout them we had heard her call her (Deceased) Grandmother by name and state a few things that there was no possible way for her to know about.

So while I might be tempted to dismiss it, it is not so easy when I see it/hear it happening first hand.

Childrens minds are not clouded by the things we have allowed ours to be clouded by. They see things as they are, not as how they want to see them.
Which obviouslly, much clearer than most can.
Myself included.

This reminds me of when I was about 4 years old. I had finished taking a shower and went downstairs in a towel. At the time I lived in a duplex. The stairs and upstairs hallway met like a T, with the bathroom right at the top. I told my mom I was done and she told me to go back upstairs to the bathroom and wait for her. I went to the steps and looked up, what I saw was a black humanoid figure walk across the part of the hallway that I could see. My mom and brother were the only ones home other than me, so I rushed to my mom and told her what I saw. She didn't believe me. I know what I saw, and have seen several other spirits since then. At most times my mind is like a child's.

What we see is based in part on what we believe to be true, or not to be true. Children have no pressupositions or indoctrination so they are much more able to pick up on what we as adults may not be able to. I have heard of many children talking about in detail WWII, spirits in houses etc.

i believe that children are more sensitive to spirits and paranormal events than adults as a childs mind dosent really know about the afterlife and as we grow up we close our mind to anything "out of the ordinary" and therefore dont notice paranormal events as we dont really believe that it is "real."
Adults just seem to think "oh my mind/imagination is running away with me."

I would say that this is a possibility. Children, while possesing active imaginations, have also not been taught by society what "is and is not possible."

From a few different studies I have read (and I will say I have no idea how reliable they may be), the studies assert that as children tend to have better hearing than adults (we lose the higher registers as we age and have hearing damage/loss), the are better able to hear spirits or other audio paranormal occurrences.

Cryingmist stated it just as I would. Children are very opened minded. They have no clutter of the minds, such as work, paying bills, deciding on dinner. As adults we must learn to stay focus and relax our minds, to take the clutter out for awhile. To learn to open the 3rd eye once again.

Me and my friends just had a discussion about this the other day! I believe its completely true. We all went into agreement that children dont know any better. They see something and not knowing think its the norm. My niece used to coo and smile at the wall. It took some getting used to(thinking maybe she was in early stages of craziness :P) before I realized..maybe there was something there that I couldnt see.
I look at it that as we get older our minds begin to block it out since its not "the norm" and we forget about it. Unless we start working at keeping it intact as we get older or its so powerful that our minds cant take over. I think everyone had atleast one case of it or not when we were all younger.

think children are more suseptible than adults because once u get older u find ways to rationalize things. children dont do that. they believe. they see. they feel. once u become an adult u lose sight of a lot of things and find reasons as to why what is happening.

when i was a child i saw spirits and shadows all the time. my mom and dad drilled it in me that there was no such things as ghosts ( as im sure most parents do when a child is flipping out about something they cant see ) to this day i still have those experiences. but they are few and far between now. i just havent forgotten. most adults forget. the real world isnt any more real than our imaginations. all it does is block u from other things. gets u wrapped up in it.

I believe that children can see much more "other worldly" beings than can adults because they are open to them. As we grow older, we begin to stop believing in fairies and ghosts, looking for a rational explanation as to why we lose our keys or feel strange drafts or whatever. As children, we're open and are willing to believe that cold spot is a ghost or the fairies hid our favorite toy.

It kinda makes me sad, really, to know that those wonderful little sponges will eventually absorb the cynicism of an adult.

Thinking back to when I was a child, I can't remember having any visions like that. But I don't think we should assume the culprit is an overactive imagination. PERHAPS children really are sensitive to these kinds of paranormal experiences. I don't think there's any way to prove any of these possibilities. In times like those, I've been told a mother should trust her gut.

My Nana died in 1984... I was 11... The night BEFORE she died.. something VERY odd happened.. I can ONLY narrow it down to ONE THING.

I was in bed.. and I suddenly woke to a smell.. It was parma-violents... nana's favourite scent- she wore violet scents.. AND I looked over to my bedroom door, I noticed the a shimmering 'heat wave' kind of ripple goin on.. I sensed HER.....
I felt calm and I went bacl to sleep...
That Morning... Mum got a call from Uncle Jimmie... nana had died, peacefully in her sleep that night.

I Wasn't able to say good bye to her... BUT I feel she came to me and said good bye.
She has visited me when i went to see a medium and said things ONLY I, could have known, to verify it WAS HER.

I believe a childs mind is more OPEN and more able to tune in.. We use such a little part of our brains... If we train our minds to be in touch with that zone.. I am sure we'd grow up with the capacity. Most gifted with the power of Mediumship have had it SINCE child-hood.. and GROW WITH it.

A child's mind is pure. I believe that they can see things more easily than adults. I also believe this is true with animals. Children have always held the ability to see things because they haven't had their minds clouded with what is and isn't acceptable as "normal". Children don't have perceptions of what is said to be reality yet. By adulthood, we have heard many things that cloud our perceptions, making it harder for our minds to realize things that occur around us. Children, on the other hand, are still learning and seem to absorb everything around them, including the sounds or sights of spirits.

Children can see spirits because they have not yet been tainted by "logic". As we grow up most adults will tell us that there are no such things as ghosts, spirits, etc.... and over time we start to beleive that. So as adults we can not see them as well and some times not at all. My little girl "sees" everything. Her teachers tell her that it's just her imagination, but I tell her to not be afraid of what she sees and it's ok to talk to me about it.

Maybe it's time for you and your son to look up the history of your home. See if there have been any deaths there.

When you're young, you are easily amused and more interested in things but as you get older, you mature and have other things to worry about so you pay less attention to your surroundings.

I still see them...
I still get attacked
the last time was when my vampire left for work and i was sleeping in the room alone. Apparently i felt someone grab my head, i thought it was my vampire but then i remembered he left for work, so how can that be? I opened my eyes and saw this girl (she wasn't that pretty) with messy long hair. She said i was scared of her and now she's back to get me (i really don't know who she is. I don't even recognize her) and she screamed at me. I thought i was dreaming and i shut my eyes cause it was too loud and it hurt. The hand that held my head jerk my head to the right and i heard 3 men laugher an a woman (my vampires' mother; she died of breast cancer) they were speaking in spanish (i only too a year of spanish so i didn't understand that much, but apparently she was talking about how i look and my personality to the other people that were there (it was too dark to see, we barely get light in that room during the early AM time, i could barely see there outline). They all started laughing and getting closer and closer to me. I knew they wanted me hurt. I'm sure i haven't done anything to upset them, maybe they just wanted to play with me. I struggled for the longest time and i guess i fainted because it all went quiet. I opened my eyes and it was 10 AM, the sun was lighting the room. Again, i'm late for school

Children are innocent and therefor are more apt to have interactions with paranormal activity than an adult because as we get older our minds become closed to the possibilities of anything like that being true.My daughter at pre-school age had a similar accurance which terrified me to say the least. We were waiting for the bus and well there is a cemetary right next to the busstop and I was holding her where she was facing the cemetary and was having a conversation with a little boy. When I turned to see who she was talking to there was noone there and the next day the same thing happened but this time the little boy wanted her to help him find his older sister and she wanted to follow him and well as a mother you may understand my fear of allowing this to cut this story short after school was out that second day she was yelling at this little boy cause he wanted to come home and play with her after I had already told her she coldnt be around him and when we got home her eyes changed and she became very rude and hard to handle .So please be careful and watch your children closely from one parent to all others.

I think there is something that changes with not only perception, but also with language as one matures. As a native Spanish speaker, I know that my ability to use English is directly related to the fact that I went to English speaking schools as a kid. Though I cannot explain why, I believe that prepubcent children are more intuitive on a variety of levels.

I do believe that children have an easier time of seeing things that we may not.
When my daughter tells me she won't go into a room because of a ghost, which is not very often, I believe her. It gets my hackles up a little bit in that I wish it didn't scare her so much.

As others have said, It is true. Children are more open minded to this them many adults. Children have the ability to see things that adults just dont or wish not to see. As Adults , many have lost that sight. They have closed their minds and thinking to the spirits or just ignore the possiblities.

From what I see from all these posts..basically theres both pros and cons to a child seeing these spirits.

Obviously at times it can be good, with the spirit being maybe a family member or something..then theres the ones who come into contact with more (possibly violent?) spirits, etc. (although I think my grandmother is with my son at times)

So what exactly is the best way to explain this to a 5 year old who can't quite grasp the meaning between the good and bad spirits? A spirit that could possibly seem harmless to the child, could possibly be harmful.

Do I tell my child to stay away from them and ignore them? or to listen and communicate with them? Ahh so much contradiction in this subject. lol

In my opinion yes children have stronger abilities to see spirits simply because their unformed minds haven't been corrupted by an adults perspectives or opinions. They are more open and receptive to new things. So therefore children have the ability to see and understand more than adults about the other realms. Many imaginary friends are guides that are there to protect them.

my daughter is only 19 months but she talks alot for her age and she see's spirits alot and can tell you about them... I have found her in her room play and talking to someone and I can ask her and she knows their name.... I though it was odd because this has been going on alot since she turned one and its always the same 4 names that she talks to and about and I really don't see a 19 month old being able to lie about something like that so yes I do extreamly think that your son is seeing something that you are not

I agree that children are able to see things that adults cannot. I think it is because the haven't been programmed into thinking that they aren't real, and therefore are more open to it. I heard somewhere that often a child's "imaginary friend" isn't really imaginary at all, but is a spirit that a child can see that an adult can't.

Let your son be the judge if the spirit scares me then he will stay away... thats how my daughter is... and the ones they feel comfortable with let them express anything they want and just be open about it talk to your son about it if he makes friends with one of them listen to what he tell you... Your son will know good and bad because he will feel it... but there is no need to tell him to pretend they are not there... most of them are not there to hurt him. Just like there are good and bad people just let your son be the judge and explain to him that the ones that he dosn't like to just not play with.... almost like you would do with a kid at school that he didn't like

I think children are very sensitive since their imaginations are more open to all possibilities such as ghosts or see through anything that we cant see. I used to babysit my niece & when i would hold her she'd stare very hard at my wall right beside my rocking chair. My wall is painted white, so theres wasnt anything there for her to really focus on. Im guessing she saw her great gpa & other family members that passed away before she was born. I think if we kept the child like quality of believing things we cant see like kids do, that we'd stumble upon things that we never thought were possible......

I believe that a child's mind is so unclouded by the every day stresses of life that adults have to put up with, that they can indeed see things that most can't.

I have dealt with this myself on occasion in my previous residence. From the time my son was able to hold his head up, he would chuckle at things above our heads and around behind us. Up until the time he was of talking age, he would stare at things in his bedroom that should not have held any interest to him. Things like blank white walls. And some people even went as far as to say that he might have been autistic which of course we knew he wasn't. But autistic people would more likely just sit and stare while my son actually followed something around the room with his eyes.

Animals also have a strong perception to the supernatural. My dogs would watch the same "imaginary" objects that were moving around the room as well, at the same time as my son and their heads were all in sync.

I definitely think you should believe in what a child says about spirits, they have no reason to lie about it and you can tell if they're being sincere... If they really believe in what they see, they will probably insist on it... I think they are quite capable of telling the difference between reality and imagination in these situations.

I also believe it is important to encourage a child to increase this ability since it's a way for them to believe in themselves... If you insist on them being wrong, they'll just shut down and perhaps have troubles believing in themselves later on.

Children know and understand more than we think they do....

I believe children are not hindered by the "adult" concept of what is real and what is not.

So it could be that children are more sensitive to things that adults do not experience.

OH Yes! Children are much more sensitive to the paranormal that adults. Adults have so many prejudges, we are told all of our lives "that's not real, no monster in the closet, nothing under the bed, stop talking to your invisible friend". I've always wondered, how many "invisible friends" are really spirits just looking for human contact? Of course they would be drawn to children. The innocence and purity of their souls must act like a magnet.

children are more sensitive to spirit/ghost contact as they are pure minded & innocent of the world...ghosts interact more with children than they do with adults because as we grow older we choose to block out that which we can not explain...as children ghost/spirit interaction is often put down to imaginary friends....some of which is true but some of which is more than that...i was too as a child befriended by a ghost as some of you have seen in other threads...but after telling my mum about her...(my mum too put it down to an imaginary friend) but then strange things started to happen & my mum asked about the history & found that we did indeed have the ghost of a young child!

Children often see things that adults do not...its like the 3rd eye...but it gets pushed away as we learn more about life & fact, but the idea of supernatural gets diminished & disreguarded!..(i hope this all makes sense)

Children are quite sensitive. All three of mine would lay in their cribs, from the time they were born up until about 2, and stare at a corner of the ceiling smiling and babbling. My grandmother always told me it's their guardian angel that they see.

At my firehouse, in our old building, my oldest would hold conversations with somebody in the storage room if the door was left open. When I asked him about it he said he was talking to the man. I know of at least 2 deaths in the building and both were men. I think he was speaking to one of them.

the same thing hapened to my little brother. during his childhood he would always play in our backyard by himself. one day i went out and asked him what he was doing. he responded "playing with goink" i asked him who goink was, and he told me that no one could see goink but him. he told me that goink carried with him a trash can, and that he was very scary. we researched the history ov the house, and it turned out that a garbage man had lived there like 30 years before we did. we could never find his name though. and even in my childhood there i always felt uneasy in the backyard, and could sometimes hear laughing, but no one was there. we have since moved away from that house.

maiden, i agree with what dark chaos said. if ur 5 year old sees tings, telling him theres no such thing or training him to make it go away isnt necessarily the best idea. if it is scary to him, then he should stay away. if not. then he can ackknowledge the prescence. he doesnt have to communicate with any spirits. he is young and impressionable. i wouldnt suggest he try to communicate from now.

Since most people train their children to behave in the way our society thinks of as normal , I think children at a certain age that have not received that training see quite a few things adults do not.

Most adults would be considered mentally ill if they talked to an "imaginary friend" or spirit. Even if an adult actually saw a spirit or something paranormal, telling the wrong person would land you in a straight jacket with a thorazine drip.

Wasn't it the movie, "Betelguese" where there is a quote, "Most times the living won't see the dead" ...?

I posit that until we are taught otherwise, by parents, by society, by disappointments, that all avenues of possibility remain open to us, most especially as children.

This is so cool that this thread is here. This is a true story and it just happend tonight.

My friends son cole saw a spirit tonight. Well, we think that is what happend. He is only about to be three years old. The other night when i stayed at her house, her, her roommate, and I heard a thumping noise. The roommate's name is randy. Well we all were freaked out and started getting paranoid or whatever. Well Randy was sitting in the chair that is close to where we heard the noise. He ended up zoning out really bad and when he "came to" he had a tear running down his cheek and he was like that was so deep. So then of course we were freaking out. Well that happend on Monday night. Tonight when i was over there, we heard the thumping again. As soon as we heard it my friends son said, "who is that is he friendly?" There was nobody there! Then he kept glancing over to the utility room where the noise was coming from and he said it was Randy. Well Randy was gone to the races! So we honestly believe that there is a spirit there and we were talking about trying to invoke the spirit. So i posted a thread asking if anyone knows how to do that.

I think children are able to see spirits & unusual things easier than most. As we grow older we are taught that most weird & unsual things are not real, & you can't see them. Wether we want to believe it or not, I think it affects the way we see things around us. Children are innocent & their minds are still open to the possibility that anything is possible.

I fully believe children can see things adults are unable or don't want to see... I good example is a friend of mine as a child used to have many experiences with the paranormal... in fact to this day he still does just not as much cause he's a very busy man but since he grew up dealing with things like that he never got the grown up sense of "nothing"..... His sons have also had moments with spirits... just to give you a few more reasons to believe your own son wasn't just making it up!!!!

I find this to be true ... My oldest son when he was 3 was in my mothers house in a back room playing alone.. She overheard him having a conversation with someone and went in to investegate.. She asked him who he was talking to .. he said grandpa Steve.. who he had never met since he had passed away in his sleep in that very house at the young age of 32 ( Stepfather) before my son was born .. my mother asked him what he looked like .. he said well duh granma you know you have a picture of him on the TV..lol.. So it is my belief that younger children are more in tune with the spirits

I definately believe children can see these beings, being a mother myself, my youngest son of three wakes up throughout the night screaming, he looks behind me as though something is there screaming with fear. As i look to see in the same direction his eyes are pointing, there is nothing there. though if i move him him away to look at another corner of the room he stills looks at the same spot.
Othertimes he goes into a frenzy of madness which is completely uncontrollable, the first time it happened i put it down to tantrums, but they seemed to of got ALOT worse ~ he looks at me with emptiness in his eyes , though he screams are cronic and with pain. (it is so frightening that i have cried with fear) I am sure at times he gets possessed by something that takes over his body.

Children are much more receptive to the paranormal because they have not been tainted by the reality of our adult world. The more education we receive, the less likely we are able to accept those things which we can not comfortably place in our world view (the way we precieve the world and our surroundings).

I have been a pre-school teacher for many years and have observed this many times. On one occasion I watched a child build a tower which according to our concepts of physics could have not stood up, but id did. I then possed the question to another teacher in the room, does the structure stand because of the lack of knowledge of the physical world.

Children are just so much more open and receptive in general (until we corrupt them)

Destroy the mirror and look behind the reflexion of the world you receive every day & night.
No, it has no need just looking behind the mirror, this is only closing your eyes.

Children have no mirror as they are born. Children but get raisen to develop one. Not only because the 'reason' and 'sanity', 'maturity' and 'rationality' commence it,
but also to be save against harming influences or hurtings. The mirror is not hanging on the wall, it covers our perception. You can't look behind it.

Learn from the free and unbiased perception of the children. Open your mind and free yourself.

I think children can see things adults cannot, because how is it that kids all around the world could be afraid of things like monsters under their bed and in their closet..So they must see something strange...

i think that children are able to see spirits more-so than adults is because they are more inosent in that they wont freak out as much and that they really have no idea whats goin on, is sweet actually, the innocence of a child

When I was younger, I saw a ghostly black figure when I was in the shower . . . it was actually quite scary. I was the only one home at the time, and I started to freak out, thinking there was a paedophile in my bathroom. But when I opened the shower door, they were gone. I think that children's minds are most open to sprit forms.

I believe this whole-heartedly. My son, when he was a baby used to look into one corner of the room and laugh like crazy. I think maybe the great-grandparents were there for a visit, but this went on and on, always in the same corner. He was definitely seeing something.

I have always believed that children were more"sighted" than adults and have the ability to see spirits and so on.Because they don't know they don't exist*grins*

As I've said in another thread- I believe it to be so.
No one has told babies or young children yet that there is no such thing as "ghosts" or "spirits"
Part of seeing IS believing
